Yep! I posted the link to it in the cheap games forum too since we didn't have a game news forum. This is great news, imo.

I'm undecided. Why do you think this is good news?

      People are still watching Gotham?

I kinda got tired of it when I realized that all the villains EXCEPT Selina will be elderly when this Batman actually is of age to fight them.

Batman's villains being in their mid-forties when he's in his prime is a great way to explain how easily he beats them up. >.>

The cast is pretty good, they found a great Supergirl for the role. I was amused by all the non-references to Superman - he's never called by name ("the Big Guy") or shown directly (always shots of his back, or a cape or something).

      It's promising.

The unfortunate compromise of using someone related to a big name that they can't have acess to because the big name is in the movies. Man, at least SHIELD can make references to the Avengers by name. But it's honestly not the writers's fault--I suspect the executives want Superman mentioned but WB won't let them do it explicitly so the writers have their hands super-tied, (pun entirely intended). I'm willing to forgive all weirdness due to this simply for the fact that executives are dicks this way and writers have a hard job as it is without having to jump through these dumbass hoops.

The new Supergirl show - originally slated for CW but was taken as a showrunner for CBS's entry into superhero television. Did anyone pick up the pilot? What are your thoughts?

I watched the pilot ages ago (but will watch it again this week). I really liked it. I think if they get a good fight choreographer (like the one from Arrow) and can keep their budget on-point for the special effects, it will be a great show.

It's broader than a statement made by one person though. There are many times that I have seen people shot down on games for making ugh another <something> why don't people made something else that we don't have any of? When in fact to do so means that those folks are cut off from a lot of play/focus currently unless they "make their own fun." That is a fun challenge to some, but very intimidating to others. And thus my original statement that diversity is okay/desirably if it makes you feel good (and it does to many of us), but usually there is a reason for the imbalance that should be looked at. Maybe it's not a big deal (and then who cares if a sphere is mostly X for awhile) but if it is, the reasons should be assessed/dealt with as well as a cap.

      Agreed.

In general, when I see "ugh, more people should make X because we have enough Y" I first look at what the person making the comment is playing. If it's Y, then they need to STFU.

If it's not, then I wonder what this person would do in order to help the new player integrate into the game while playing something that has no immediate integration.

This varies as an issue. Werewolf doesn't tend to have it, since Packs are at the top and Tribes are secondary with regards to organization (though you do get it with auspice a little in Combat vs. Social builds, etc.). But Vampire can have problems if you have Covenants that ridiculously outweigh others.

That's why I'm not sure banning a class of PC gets you more activities in other areas. It may give you more pcs of the desired type (who then hang out and do social) but it doesn't usually solve the problem of why there is an imbalance in the first place. 🙂

Oh, absolutely. I didn't even bother replying to @Tempest's aspersions upon the Rahu because they're silly. She's silly. She knows that. It's okay. >.>

I love the ephemeral stuff, personally. And I like incorporating it. WW is fun because it's so essential.

      I'll bite.

Doors. How would you use them in everyday RP with other PCs?

I am not @tragedyjones but I'll take a stab at this one, with the caveat that this is only my experience/take on it.

With PCs, Doors, I find, are best used as a framework for OOC conversation about what would have the best chance of getting a PC to sign on to an idea or attempt at manipulation. They're great for a framework, because the initiating player has to develop a /concrete/ end goal. "My PC would like to convince your PC to support her in the upcoming election, and I'd like to work from the Doors system to do so." Assuming the other player is cool with that, you both now have a frame of reference, and can work out the answers to the following questions:

What's the targeted PC's initial disposition? Does My PC know something that might improve it if they accepted it ? (Soft leverage, or a scene/roll made to improve the initial disposition.)

How many Doors does the targeted PC have? Would (action of my PC) be something that has a chance of opening a Door? Would you like to scene this out, or should tickets to the Very Exclusive Event just arrive in your mailbox with a "Hope you like this," note from My PC? If my PC wanted to turn you against the other candidate, would you be comfortable with, perhaps, a contested and extended action while we scene debating the relative merits of the candidates?

Basically, I try to give the Target PC ultimate control over what has a chance of working (and if the desired goal is feasible at all), and then use the dice and the Doors mechanic to decide if it DOES work. Doors make a great framework for discussing social actions so that no one (unless they're just completely opposed to dicing social actions at all) feels railroaded or like the goalposts are being changed on them. Caveat: I haven't ever moved to Hard Leverage or Forcing Doors, so can't speak to that.

This is probably the best answer you're going to get, yeah. and if more people used this, they would have a lot more to RP about. A lot of people who want something from another PC want " a scene" in which they get it, basically. To me, that's boring. A series of things, not all of which have to be scenes, is the best course (as described above).

      Dear @tragedyjones.

I'm a relatively young Ventrue who was Embraced during college. None of my friends know I died or that I'm now a creature of the night. They think I just disappeared for a few years due to a breakdown from stress (I was pre law). I still maintain contact with them for dinner and theatre dates and they don't have a clue.

My problem is that now we're in our thirties, they're starting to get married. I've already had to miss three weddings because they were scheduled for noon. My coterie says I should just break ties with them but I don't want to do that.

My question is this: a fourth friend just got engaged and they're setting the date. Should I dominate them into an evening ceremony or just resign myself to another missed wedding? Do I still need to buy a wedding gift for them if I'm not going?

Yep, but I would say that probably anywhere there are far more people who are comfortable with an off the cuff hunt and combat scene than they would be for a spirit negotation one. For whatever reason, IME the ephemeral stuff seems to add another barrier. I didn't say it was impossible, just that if you are going to cap easy entry PCs (eliminating rahu or combat types) because you want to diversify your sphere and don't have a good chunk of available people comfy with running spirit negotation or fetish creating/gathering scenes, then that's not really going to help get an /active/ diverse sphere.

I'm concentrating on a specific topic here:

I'm happy to talk anyone through ephemeral systems to make this easier. That said, I'm also of the opinion that if a system is making it harder for you, find a way around it that makes it easier.

The ephemeral Conditions, for instance, are meant to have plot based around them, not to have to be shoe-horned into plot, and this is counter-intuitive to how a lot of MU storytellers go about things.

      For example:

A spirit of racism needs the Open Condition to possess a person--but what if the person is not racist at all? This is a problem if your plot depends on this otherwise non-racist person starting to act that way because of the spirit and having their friends and family slowly notice the change; or using it as a clue for the PCs to notice something is wrong (especially if you need it to happen quickly, not over a long period of time). So what do you do? You ignore that bit of the system. Fuck the Open Condition. That dude is Urged now and everything he would normally do comes tinged with a little bit of racist. Maybe he starts singing Avenue Q without enough sarcasm and spouting racist stereotypes.

If something is a barrier and ignoring it doesn't feel like a big deal, then it probably isn't. I'm not saying "ignore power limitations" or "grossly overpower them" or "make a spirit of X act out of character". But there are things a person can ignore, largely because what you want to do is still possible, it's just a matter of time or doing it a specific way that can be annoying to have to figure out off the cuff.

Ephemerals can be particularly complex because they have an entirely separate system regarding how they work, and it can be annoying. But it's not too complicated once you get it. One of the best things about spirits, IMO, is that spirits are hyperfocused. Basically, everything they do has to do with their nature. a spirit of fire wants fire, flames, burning, nownownow; it doesn't have complex emotions, motivations, and schemes. It is fire, and fire burns. Smart players will exploit that; smart storytellers will twist it in interesting ways.

I ramble. I would love to see more spirit negotiation stuff, and low-key possessions, urgings, etc., and am happy to help anyone who needs a quick tutorial regarding it. Even a Rank 1 or lower-tier Rank 2 Spirit can cause havoc for a werewolf pack in the hands of a smart storyteller, not to mention what they can do to people who aren't adept at handling spirits.

Edited to add that I would also love to see people taking initiative when it comes to spirits affecting their daily roleplay. Is your character an angry person? Have a spirit of rage or frustrating or violence Fetter itself to them; see where that goes. Do you spend all your time running around trying to bang as many people as possible? Lust, sex, and STD spirits galore; or maybe you find yourself fucking in a place where something horrific happened to a ghost that still haunts the area...

It's the world of darkness. As has been said before, that doesn't mean everyone has to be a dick; it means that the world is full of bad shit. It's really easy to make that bad shit part of your daily roleplay. And the scenes don't even have to conclude in anything other than "ah fuck ghost ghost ghost" and your PCs running out of there and never looking back. And if seven months later you want to revisit that chance scene? Maybe someone shows up dead in that place and you say, "fuck, it's time to bust this ghost" and you get into your firetruck and... you get the point.
