@Cupcake said in Fandom and entitlement:

Death of the Author has always been an arguable topic. I don't have a problem with fanfic, and my days of reading it with any kind of direct interest are long over. Come to think of it, my favorite fics were always the ones that expanded the content of canon or were very, very obviously AU and intended that way, rather than "agenda fic", particularly of the sort that pushes ships that fandom becomes obsessed with (I'm looking at you, Sterek fans).

On rare occasion, a fanfic writer ascends, and it's rather nice - like for that one lady who Xena fanfic and actually ended up becoming a writer of some pretty good episodes.

So I can't honestly say whether or not I invest in the notion of Death of the Author, or maybe I kinda sorta do, but only in certain ways.

Death of the Author can be separated into different sections, only some of which are in play in this conversation.

If I never have to go head-to-head with Adorno again it'll be too soon; but given my university choices, I will. And probably soon.

I would be intrigued to see a breakdown, with numbers and percentages and such, of where particular posters were most active. I would be very intrigued.

@Tinuviel said in Poll: Do I enjoy this hobby more than I don't?:

@Three-Eyed-Crow I don't think that would tell you much without the context of post contents.

Most of my posts are in the Hog Pit. But most of those posts are being snide or sarcastic which wouldn't be evident based solely on statistics.

@mietze said in Poll: Do I enjoy this hobby more than I don't?:

I do think that if the posts were filtered out for being positive/just gifs/off-topic rambling, that the skewing of "omg you people are so negative!" would be lessened considerably. But the venting is always going to be higher than the yippyskippy, I'm sure.

Yeah. I mean, half of my posts are this type of post, and then like a whole bunch are just me saying "yikes x#" and getting way too many upvotes for it.

(Don't stop upvoting it. I love it. It feeds my soul. FEEEEEEEEEED MEEEEEEEEEEEEE.)

Absolutely, Gany. I agree. You have to be able to pick the right genre to mix.

    • RE: Through which lens...

It depends on the character and the game; sometimes it also depends on the combination of characters with a game and what the scene entails.

While I often try to keep a backdrop of the game's general genre, I find that MUing is very flexible in that each scene can almost have its own genre, though of course genres that have more to do with character attitude rather than setting elements are much easier to change into "subgenres" within the game's main one.

For example, it's easy to get into a romantic drama subgenre for a scene in a World of Darkness game or a Battlestar Galactica game, but I doubt you'll have fantastical elements in the latter, or Cylons in the former.

@Arkandel said in Poll: Do I enjoy this hobby more than I don't?:

@Coin said in Poll: Do I enjoy this hobby more than I don't?:

I put yes, but there is a caveat:

I enjoy it more now, when I alot less time to it, than I did in the past, when it was a focus.

I think this is a more widespread issue with gaming in general because it's a very human thing for us to expect a return for our investment. Like... when a hobby - hell, when anything - becomes a big part of our lives since we just sink so many hours of the day into it then on an emotional level we wait something proportionate back from it. A payout, a win, recognition, something.

And... well, MUSHing doesn't have that. Gaming doesn't have it unless we're among the damn few who monetize and do it professionally. But otherwise even the most 'successful' among us won't ever see anything near the level such returns would have to make them worth the investment, so entertainment and whatever fulfillment that grants needs to be it.

Hell, it's not even like more mainstream forms of nerd-dom we can at least expect... if not recognition then awareness. Spending 3+ hours a night on something no one outside of the hobby even knows exists, and you'd have to explain it from the ground up to even get a confused 'oh, okay, I see' is... not easy.

That's a pretty tough pill to swallow but, I believe, it's essential that we do it knowingly.

Oh, it's definitely just "the MU version of a much more common problem", yeah.

I put yes, but there is a caveat:

I enjoy it more now, when I alot less time to it, than I did in the past, when it was a focus.

It's something I touched on with my therapist the other day when she asked if I was back to playing and I said yes, but in a diminished capacity (from when she met me years and years ago), and that I was enjoying it more when I got to play. It comes down to, we concluded, saturation and expectation.

I used to play a lot, and immersed myself in it, and it was my focus. That meant that if things were going badly in my RP, it would affect everything else in my life, and my hobby wouldn't be fulfilling or even enjoyable because it made me miserable not even just while playing, but outside it, too. Now, in a point in my life where I give it not minimal, but definitely much less, attention (I don't play on weekends [with rare exceptions], mostly, and especially not on Saturdays when I hardly even chat with RP folks at all if I even do), I find that I am not as saturated with the hobby and that I am expectant of even the simplest scenes, which makes for a much more gratifying experience.

TL;DR I enjoy it now because I don't do it as much or with as much focus.

@Arkandel said in Difference between an NPC and a Staff PC?:

@Thenomain said in Difference between an NPC and a Staff PC?:

When does an NPC become a Staff PC?

When the NPC serves a staff member, and they are not a plot device for a specific plot/sphere.

      Some signs for such NPCs:

      • they are played pretty frequently as opposed to just when it serves plot reasons
      • they have special relationships (and spend more time) with some players who often happen to be friends with the staff member
      • they are not allowed to switch hands and be played by a different staff member
      • they resolve (rather than be catalysts for) plotlines with the PCs helping them rather than the other way around
      • they fit most definitions of a Mary Sue even if they happen to be 'tormented' in unique, snowflake-ish ways

As you can tell this happens often enough that it's pretty cliche. 🙂

      Fuck you, Ark.

I didn't sign up to this board to agree with you, I did it to be a pain in your ass. Stop it. Now.

@Seraphim73 said in If you work hard, son, maybe someday you'll RP:

there's very little more annoying than someone coming on RP Requests to say "Hey, anyone want to RP" and then when you say "Sure, what did you have in mind," they say "Oh, I don't know. You want to go to a bar?"

Yes, I honestly hate this v much.

      Person: 'Anyone wanna RP?'
Me: 'Sure! What did you have in mind!'
Person: 'I dunno. What do you wanna do?'

...Please don't put the onus on me, Person! You tossed out the idea to RP. Gimme a hook. An idea, a place, something. This is the entire reason why I'm hesitant, sometimes, to respond to such vague queries, because these days it's become more common than not that if I reply...... I'm suddenly the one who has to come up with everything. The location. The idea. The scene set. I feel like I'm their sole source of entertainment rather than a collaborator.

      Also good:

      A: Anyone for RP?
B: Yeah, what did you have in mind?
A: Not sure, let me check your wiki and see if there's something that could be fun for both of us.

I mean, you don't have to have an idea right away, but be willing to put in the effort once you have full context.

@faraday said in If you work hard, son, maybe someday you'll RP:

@Derp said in If you work hard, son, maybe someday you'll RP:

Always have an actual plan when it comes to RP, and don't make others pick the venue/purpose. Offer concrete examples. Be flexible to negotiation. You'll find that this isn't nearly as hard as it seems.

One thing I haven't seen much of, but wonder how it would fly, is something like... "Anybody want to RP? If you're interested I'll pitch something specific to our chars and we can figure something out." That at least shows that you're willing to meet them halfway on doing the pitch work, but allows you to do something more targeted than "random scene in random public place."

Like that. I do that all the time.

      I do it occasionally.

Sometimes it works. Often it doesn't.

I do take into consideration any changes in the setting and try to take out any quirks and details that were intrinsic to the original setting and add equivalent but different ones that are intrinsic to the new setting.

This is more or less what happened with Chronicles of Shannara on MTV. It wasn't all that good, MTV didn't know what to do with it, and then cancelled it after dumping a bunch of money into a show on a network that's audience wants to watch 'reality' shows featuring reasonably attractive people making terrible romantic decisions.

      Iiiiiish.

Teen Wolf ran for seven seasons, so I don't think it's fair to say that the network's audience was a problem. Shannara just didn't capture the attention the same way. I mean, I enjoyed it, but I like terrible stuff as much as really good stuff.
