    • RE: Threads of Pern

      @flahgenstow:
I'm not @Songtress, so feel free to tell me to shove off, but I love imparting info if given the opportunity:

Biologically, golds are the fertile females of the Pernese dragons. The social structure of the weyr (the individual dragonrider community) reflects that; goldriders are exclusively women and are expected to take leadership roles within the weyr. The most senior gold dragon's rider is the female leader of the entire weyr, and the male leadership role is fulfilled by whichever bronze (or rarely, brown) manages to breed with her during a mating flight. Think of it like being in a Lords and Ladies game and effectively getting into the highest noble rank. Also, the "glamour" of having a gold dragon, because you know, shiny objects. There's actually a term for this; Shiny Object Syndrome.

I think a lot of games explain away the Green infertility as being due to eating firestone.

I don't really care. The idea of greens with clutches is horrifying. 😉

      1. That's the canon explanation.
      2. AGREED.

I have a character on there I haven't touched in a while. Maybe I should give it another go.

Unfortunately in my state, pedestrians have automatic right-of-way, even if they're not in a crosswalk. So it doesn't matter where they are or what they're doing (like staring at their smartphone), or how slow they're going.

You know what's funny? I was thinking not too long ago about how much I miss being able to write up dragon and egg designs.

My first Pern game was NC, I had a goldrider (shut up) named Tarlo. I made so many mistakes, it was one of my first MU*s and I think it was the first time I ever actually used a PlayedBy on a game (Shiri Appleby, fwiw.)

      I look amazing in hats.
      Like, any hat.
Including sombreros, fezes, and those baseball hats with beer can holders on either side of the cap.

There is a 90% chance that I can walk into a room where a tv is on and guess what's playing within 3-5 seconds - even if I've never seen it before. This is also tied into the fact that I am a walking IMDB.

My parking karma is also strong.

    • RE: RL things I love

So I went and attended the first Seattle Hamiltunes - I've mentioned it earlier in the thread. I'd love to say I got up there and sang my songs and was amazing and awesome and people wildly applauded and I'm making a note here, huge success.

Truth is, I got up there and I stumbled in some spots, I went flat on more than one occasion, and it's a little difficult to talk myself out of thinking that the folks other than my friends were wincing every time I stepped up to the stage (although apparently my Burr Shot First tee got rave reviews).

Here's my take-away, though. Six months ago, a year ago, if I'd done this and done so badly, my depression would have been of epic proportions. I would have been absolutely miserable, I would have ripped into myself and felt worthless and ashamed and likely vowing never to go back. And if I'm really, really honest, my bestie probably would have gone on a discreet, don't-tell-Cupcake suicide watch. (No, I'm not kidding.)

Instead, here I am, kind of 'eh, okay, I kinda sucked, but I can get better!' I will most likely go back, will probably sign up for solos again, and I've had more people tell me they were proud of me than not. Somebody on here said Lin-Manuel would think I'm a rockstar regardless, and I carried that with me after all was said and done. The fact that I feel this way, that I haven't dragged myself in the dark, though...

This was a triumph. I'm making a note here; huge success.

    • RE: The 100: The Mush

@Kestrel said in The 100: The Mush:

I got burned out after they asked me to run an event. I'd already been losing interest before then, but that experience was so needlessly aggravating that it made me realise I was just sick of the playerbase. Disrespectful backseat GMing, constant whining and sniping over consequences. If that's what A&O had to put up with on the regular I really don't blame them for giving up.

They weren't perfect. They made some bad choices in the way they chose to run the plots, but that had nothing to do with the complaints that many other people voiced here about too much antagonism. If anything, I left because there wasn't enough conflict, of the strictly IC variety. Which is no wonder, because any time something started (I fondly recall Arlin kom Trikru punching Grey and making him drop the wounded Asher, after a missile blew up his village as a result of an 'I warned you this would happen' situation), some salty self-centered toddler would throw a tantrum about it OOC and cry 'WHY CAN'T EVERYONE JUST GET ALONG'. That, that is what killed the game for me. Not the staff, except perhaps insofar as staff caved to it and didn't do enough to police the tone.

This. All of this. Upvote forever.

My character pushed for peace, because that's what she was designed (by me) to do, and because she believed that a war of any serious sort would utterly wipe out Skaikru. She took injuries and risked her neck to do it. I only went into GetAlong mode after the nastiness between the two krus became so bad it crossed into OOC. The aforementioned player behavior was a huge part of that.

Edited to add: @Kestrel had one of the most amazing antagonists I've seen in play anywhere. She was totally our Murphy. You loved her. You hated her. You loved to hate her, you hated to love her.

I can think of good and bad examples of how the staff PCs were handled, albeit solely in my opinion.

Good: Staffer alt wants two other people to sneak out with him to go negotiate with the leader of the other faction's village. He gets the two other PCs off their butts and on their way, and once there, lets the other PCs do most of the talking. This is using their PC to move the story along and then settling back to let the other PCs Get Stuff Done.

Bad: A handful of PCs want to go talk to a head honcho NPC. Staff alt is a former protege of head honcho, but their parting was on bad terms. Staff alt declares intent to go with the group, is turned down because people are aware of the chilly relationship between head honcho and staff alt. Staffer-player comes off as pretty miffed about it. Whether they actually were, I couldn't say - I'm often shit at reading intention into text.

It's like I'm psychic or something.

Like I said, this is my first experience with them as gamerunners, and I'm not excusing their neglect - I may understand an element of it, but I don't excuse it.

I'm already on to other games, and have the means to communicate with the players I developed good relationships with that I'm eager to rp with again.

    • RE: The 100: The Mush

Like @TNP said, it was fun. I have a history of being considered a "difficult" player that I've been trying to change, and they were both kind to me and willing to assist me in that effort. Even when I disagreed with them, they both gave the impression of listening, and took the time to explain themselves. I'd certainly consider playing with them again, though I might consider what kind of support system has been set up prior to playing on a game that they run if it's just the two of them. And yeah, as I've mentioned above, they were kind to me, and kindness goes pretty far for me in general, but doubly so in MUSH experience, where I've literally had occasion where on a game after telling a staffer I was being harrassed, the response was, "what do you want me to do about it?"

This is my first experience with them as storytellers or their established pattern of game-running, but I will say this: I observed some behavior from other players ranging from passive-aggressive to outright hostile toward staff. I saw scene and plot events they'd constructed which having been scheduled for days, get suddenly picked apart by people literally hours before go time. And while I will emphasize NO, I am not dismissing A&O's responsibility or pattern of behavior, I will say if I were them, some of the flak they got from people who seemed more inclined to simply complain about problems rather than offer solutions, I'd probably have opted to bail out and say Fuck This Noise myself.

The bold emphasis mine, because I have the feeling that the first response to this will be to accuse me of being their patsy.

You might also want to get pricing from pet shipping/transport services. They really are out there, and many will give you updates on your pet en route.

I've been told I'm intimidating, too.

      I honestly don't understand why.

Ever see/read Pride and Prejudice? You know the part where Darcy tells Elizabeth that he didn't think Jane's feelings for Bingley were the same because she wasn't obvious in her expression and Lizzie's like, "SHE'S SHY!"?

      That.

@Cobaltasaurus I'm reading the Hunter/Angel series (out of curiosity and interest in your game) - I'm finding the dubious consent issues somewhat problematic, but I'm waiting to see where it goes between the focus characters.

I might be getting weary of the whole OUTSIDE SO TOUGH/INSIDE SO FEMININE/SHUDDERS AT HIS MASCULINITY stuff, but I will admit to it all being pretty titillating.

I've shared this story with a few people and so while it might out me, or some people might decide that CUPCAKE IS NAMEDROPPING! I think it's relevant to the current subject and kind of fun for me to share.

I used to work for a fairly large convention in their "American Scifi" track. Part of my job was escorting the various guests to their panels and autograph tables and being a gopher as they might need. I'm pretty laid back about meeting actors and whatnot - I mean, even when I might be screaming inside like a 12 year old I keep it pretty cool outwardly.

And then there was Jason Momoa.

It was my plan to introduce myself to him because I had been assigned to get him and the other Stargate actors to their autograph table. I walked up to him and and held out my hand for a shake and started with, "Hi, I'm --- "

      First thought: OhmygodhehasaquamarineeyesI'veneverseenactualaquamarineeyesbeforeonlytheSweetValleyHighTwinshaveaquamarine eyes...

Second thought: he smells like the ocean in Hawaii on a spring day...

I'm standing there like an idiot with my hand out, STARING at Jason Momoa. He's clearly used to it. And with a gentle smile says, "Hi, I'm Jason."

Cupcake's brain clicks back into gear, I introduce myself, we move on with life.

      Still.

HE SMELLS LIKE THE OCEAN, Y'ALL.
