There was a past thread almost 5 years ago that discussed this matter extensively. It was a very vigorous and emotional debate. I suspect this is one of the many things that must be discussed again.

But as one of the mods has requested some time off, the debate and action will not be forthcoming. I think there are other options to explore, and I will discuss with Derp after the weekend, as he's the one with the most knowledge of how this place works (between us).

She literally asked me to ban her; I literally asked everyone to stop talking about the issues until I can confer with mietze.

Mietze has asked for time to deal with her own things before she comes back to deal with issues here.

I accept the responsibility for what has happened, and there will be a summation of what has happened and what will happen, I promise.

If everyone would give mietze the courtesy of giving her (and by extension me as well) the time to work through this, I'm sure she'd appreciate it.

When I said "places that others would expect to be safer," what I meant was "places where the sort of material that is normal for the Pit does not exist."

When we previously considered doing what Runescyer has suggested, we were concerned about what would occur if something contentious occurred at a MU and link were to be provided into an area subject to the General Rules. Some members voiced their opinion that they would rather not be around that kind of vitriol, even if it occurred somewhere else.

I concur that we can critique a game's content or decisions without resorting to finger-pointing and name-calling, but that means heavily policing the remaining forums. While there is always a concern that the anger that can arise from the Hog Pit will boil over, it's arguably better than having the fires pop up in places that others would expect to be safer.

I will admit that what's there is still over my head, but we will look into improving the functionality here once we resolve the pending issues.

There's a lot of previous functions that are simply broken. I'm led to believe those functions were plug-ins and, when the underlying platform was revised or upgraded, some of them stopped working.

I'm not smart enough with tech to confirm this, though. I sort of figure such functions were like mods for a Steam game.

After a short conference, we have decided to cut access to the Hog Pit and the Politics thread until we have had a chance to fully discuss recent events.

We have also decided that all recent bannings related to those events will be reconsidered at that time.

Bringing up such recent events in other areas of the Forum will be immediately shut down and the member banned for doing so, subject to review after the discussion above.

Questions and concerns may be brought to me by PM.

I've asked for silence and peace. I didn't get it. Like any courtroom, an arbiter must ensure that the rule of law and authority is respected. If my several requests to let things stay and abate aren't enough to get the point across, I am compelled to remind members again that bannings are within my discretion.

The following folks have been banned for violating my several requests for silence regarding farfalla's banning, Derp's appointment to staff, and the closing of the Current Events thread in the Politics section.

I read the conversation. I saw the message specifically requesting that the conversation end. It did not.

It seems common sense to me that two parties can enter an engagement consensually or tolerably, but when one party elects to end it, that's the end of it.

And yet here is a log that I looked at twice now, and it is clear to me what happened.

I said this was not up for discussion. I meant it.
