RE: Cultural differences between MUDs and MUSHes
@Kestrel said in Cultural differences between MUDs and MUSHes:
This thread is exposing a lot more differences between MUDs and MUSHes than I expected. Goes to show, I think, the 'one is game-heavy, other is roleplay-heavy' distinction doesn't quite cut it. There are many more nuances to the two styles than that.
If your response was to my last post, this is why I very carefully chose my words.
There are nuances and interests. There are motivations and pleasures. You'll note that I did not say 'game-heavy' or 'roleplay-heavy' because those terms have connotations. In fact, I didn't even use MUD v. MUSH. I said simulation v. narration.
I said simulation v. narration because this discussion pops up within MUSHes, irrespective of MUDs. How immersive do we want the game to be? How much freedom should the game give to players to decide outcomes? And so on.

... that's not just a MUD vs MUSH determination.
None of this is really a MUD v. MUSH argument. It's more a difference between simulation v. narration. MUDs generally have more code to allow for more simulation experience. MUSHes, which have relatively less, learn towards a narrative experience.
Just as some people prefer Fallout 4 in Survival Mode, some people like Casual because they want to worry about less things when playing. And that's just fine. Having played on MUDs, I prefer MUSHes because I find that they cater to the casual gamer a little better -- at least, they cater to this casual gamer.
If the question is "why?", there are good answers here. If the question is "which is better?", then this is, at best, a stupid discussion to have.

But can you see how the environment fostered by this particular etiquette standard might come across as very nerve-wracking and unwelcoming?
Not really.
I try to imagine what it would have been like if you and H just showed up at the scene, only to see everyone else bolt. I don't see that as coming off as inclusive either. Communicating one's personal preferences ought not turn someone off, in my opinion.
But we all have preferences. I don't like PennMUSH, for instance. I really hate it. It's not rational. I also have a thing for redheads. There's probably some rationale to that, but I don't know what it is.
You know what gets me about the response, though? "Our available attention." What the fuck is that supposed to mean, right?

"What do you want to do?"
"I dunno, what do you want to do?"
"Anything's fine."
"Anybody got any ideas?"
<silence>This sounds like the beginning of a scene to me; likely from a Cheech and Chong movie.

We learned this in kindergarten, didn't we?
I learned it in the bedroom. It's much more fun when the first two invite you to play.

No, people are saying its polite to ask first, thus implying entitlement and control over a grid space, and the right to tell you no.
I think people have a right to control their RP, to a degree; that degree begins and ends when that RP affects others' ability to do the same. Sic utere tuo ut alienum non laedas, and all of that.

I don't understand why it's polite to expect people to ask your permission to pose themselves into a public room.
Politeness is the manner in which you conduct yourself. I think paging a person/group before entering their room is polite.
I don't think that it is rude to pose into a public room without asking first. I think it is rude to demand that people ask for your permission before coming into the public room in which you are RPing or connected.
I think we're mostly on the same page, but I'm commenting to clarify my previous comment.

It's pretty asinine, from an outsider's perspective, because it's totally unnecessary by the admission of everyone on this thread who's explained why it's necessary.
I don't think anyone said it is necessary. I think people are saying that it is polite.
It's also practical. About 40% of the time, people in public with no RP partners are idling. Even if they don't appear idle, they may just be checking @mail and Board posts, and are in no mood or place to RP. And, yes, I know that maybe you shouldn't idle on the Public Grid, but there are some pretty stupid people in the world. Frankly, I can't be bothered to deal with them.
So, I page to ask if they want to RP. Kind of like how you ask people at the bar if they would like a drink, so you can figure if they want to talk to you.

Yep. I'm all for not having to molest a thesaurus to come up with ways to indirectly communicate things.
Unfortunately for me, having a large vocabulary was all I could offer.

I don't really look for romantic partners when I roleplay.
I totally thought we had something in our bromance, man. sniff
@surreality said in Tips on Güd TS:
- (Most prevalent by far.) There's IC chemistry. If the player seems sane, it might be worth a shot. If the chemistry continues to develop in that direction and there are no OOC red flags, I'll run with it until there's a reason not to (OOC crazy surfaces, they vanish from the game, IC events separate the characters).
This is my way, exclusively. Consequently, I've met some quite-awesome RPers.
Except that jerk @lordbelh, who won't even recognize the chemistry between us.

Good. Make it 5 PM already.

Word. Seeing a game that was based around The Witcher would be rad. Maybe take some inspirations from elsewhere, too. Dragon's Dogma. Berserk. Just not the typical "high fantasy" stuff, like D&D or like Dragon Age. I could totally get behind that.
I was working on this until my free time at home dried up. And then Mage got released, so I have to fucking re-do the magic system.

Note from his appearance on Supergirl this Barry is roughly infinity times less annoying then other versions, but it is still Barry so I will only get to watch 3 parts of the crossover.
This is how the Flash can be in different places at roughly the same time.

RE: Faction-Based Villain Policy Idea
@Ghost said in Faction-Based Villain Policy Idea:
So I guess the thought behind this idea is to find creative ways to get players to loosen their death grip on their characters, provide some hard-earned IC victories, and suspend the disbelief that the dual tommy-gun and katana wielding villain/hero survived another nuclear detonation, got away, and the player base will inevitably groan going into next time...knowing that there's only a 1% chance they'll be allowed to defeat the bad guy.
Based on whatever system, I would recommend double the advancement award for the party that fails relative to the award received for the party that prevails.
