I would never play on a secretive game. I also love PBs, but Ghost and I have argued about that before so there's no need to rehash it for the umpteenth time 🙂

For sure. I like you more than I like my stance on PBs. Do your thing, Fara. I can scowl like a grumpy old man in my corner.

I will also note that despite my GOD DAMN KIDS AND THEIR METAGAMING WIKI PBS OMG EVERYTHING IS METAGAMING (Furiously raps cane against wall) WE NEED A MASONIC TEMPLE WHERE ONLY NOT METAGAMING KIDS GET TO PLAY is not some stance I go onto games and harass people with. I have an opinion. I let people do their thing. I will offer my opinions on discussions here and privately if asked, but despite these opinions I don't complain in <ooc> about it and fuck with people's fun.

@Ominous Hmm, what I more was getting at was that ones that are allow those FCs tend to be about those FCs, and then it's difficult to do dynamic change around them. If I didn't make Arx, I probably would have made a full OC/original theme modern day superhero type game, since I like the genre so much. I just don't like bumping into the hurdles around existing intellectual properties, and I don't really think it's niche, it's just very much an all or nothing proposition imo.

Some OCs have a hard time selling themselves on the WIDE FOCUS games because (IMO) of a few reasons:

      • the OC is not relevant to current RP
      • the OC may not fit into the same vision other players have of the game
      • the OC is not important, in concept, to the setting
      • there is no mechanism that gives existing PCs a reason to care about new players or OCs

I feel the xmen/brotherhood concept would mitigate a number of these issues. So long as the OC was in theme, a mutant, and not a super distracting concept (anime in disguise!), a well devised faction would have purpose to accept said OC into their numbers.

Andromeda brought back bouncy space rover truck with a gun on it. BOIIIING!

God I loved that thing. I liked the planet scanning stuff primarily because I'd sing "Scanning for life-forms cha cha cha" like Data from Star Trek, but bouncy Death Jeep was the bomb*.

*Note: Especially when you bounced over an incoming missile.

Or you accept that metagaming is not a problem but a natural part of the gaming experience, and as long as it's not being used unfairly (which is in the eye of the beholder of course) does no harm at all. Again, it comes down to what kind of game you're trying to run

Aaaaaaabsolutely. Everyone from the GMs to the players needs to be in sync not only with the theme, but with what kind of show it is.

I use this analogy a lot when it comes to WoD: Some people play The Strain. Some play True Blood. Some play Buffy.

For as long as I've played games with other players that involve choices and ambitions (so, excluding most D&D/Warhammer Quest dungeon crawls) I have always had moments where players act on OOC information. There may be an invisible guy in the corner of the room and said metagamer's PC will suddenly feel the need to climb over garbage to wave a stick around that corner of the room. I may ask "why is your character doing this, because YOU know Oocly there's an invisible guy there, but your character doesn't," and they'll say something like "Oh, my PC does this to other people so they're always paranoid about shoppers."

      "But just that corner?"
      "Yes...just that corner."
      "Ooooooookay."

Sometimes it's a fight that isn't worth it, but it's a fight I think is important to keep things fair for everyone. For someone to win, someone else may have to fail.

This is very much so a WoD problem, as WoD highly involves secrets between PCs and powers that leverage social rolls and espionage that require players to relent agency over their PCs due to results, which is not popular in mushing.

The more Changeling I read the more it seems like a game centered around surviving decades of physical/mental/spiritual rape.

This is some grim shit, folks.

But there's also the possibility to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt it, which is nice.

To double down, I think the best Changeling players see it this way and embrace it.

All refugees with similar tales of abuse, hiding from similar BoogeyMonsters, trying to hide and praying every night that the ACTUAL monster doesn't reach up from under the bed and drag them back to a timeless, warped landscape of abuse.

Changeling's point is missed entirely if this aspect is ignored in lieu of otters flying biplanes made of insect carapice.

Kimmy Schmidt trope I would love. The level of denial and forced getting over it would be a logical mental response, and would love it more to see those little cracks in the porcelain from time to time.

    • RE: The OOC Masquerade ?

I think some of these points have hit the nail on the head.

Each game should ask and answer the following in this manner:

      • Is this game a collaborative storytelling/writing game where it is acceptable to utilize wiki/log information as writers to work on scene ideas together? ALL information is to be considered IC, but designed to be shared OOCly for coordination (key word, there) of scenes/plot/plot twists.

      • Is this game based on an architecture of rules acceptable PvP that involves elements of politics, secrets, and sphere competition? If so, only information gathered through verifiable IC means should be acted upon, and strong separation between what the player knows and the character knows needs to be practiced and enforced. Collaborative writing is encouraged, but the useable information in character must be obtained through IC means (rolls, role play, logs). This can result in unexpected failure, loss, character death, and places less control of the stpry outcome in each player's creative control.

Both approaches can be fun, but when you have some players doing A and others doing B, you have problems.

@Tempest IIRC the Brotherhood was generally welcome in Utopia so long as they behaved and didnt draw law enforcement.

In X men Canon, Utopia was a recognized 'burb of San Francisco, a city who in their spirit of acceptance, extended their views to mutant rights, as well.

So think mutant town that upgraded to MutantBurg complete with being a recognized part of California. IIRC.

Naturally, that also drew a lot of drama towards the greater bay area.

Fucking SEKIRO, man. It's like a gloriously abusive relationship.

I will spend HOURS retrying to fight the same boss over and over and over. I die. I die. I die. I almost win. I die 10 more times. Almost win again. I die 10 more times.

      AND THEN?

I climb onto the back of the horse mounted Samurai and ram my katana through his throat, throw him to the ground, and collect my XP and it's like...

      DOANFACE, BITCH.

So fucking rewarding, but 30% of the time it's OMGFUCKTHIS. WHY? Because it's challenging, doesn't promise you a win, and you need skills to play it.

I love games made by FROM SOFTWARE (Dark Souls, Bloodborne) for this, but at the same time they're some sadistic bastards.

      Young X-Men
PLEASE do allow them. Mercury, Rockslide, X-23 are all great characters. I am not hot on OCs either, and I am much more prone to teach as Nightcrawler, Emma or Gambit if it is a FC student. I am not saying BAN OCs, but OCs need to understand they are fighting an uphill battle and not resent other players for it. It would be unfair to hate people for not liking OCs, as it would be unfair to ban OCs altogether.

Anyone that isn't a fan of the Young X-Men crew need to check out Skottie Young and Humberto Ramos' (Written by Kyle/Yost) run of New X-men (#38-46).

It really does reflect on the horrors that come with being a teenaged mutant at a boarding school that is GROUND ZERO in the war for mutant rights, and when Messiah Complex starts, at one point, they're all huddling in by the fire together, scared out of their minds, with a few X-Men left behind to protect them while waiting for Predator X to come and eat them alive.

There's a lot more RP to be had with this crew than teenage romance

    • RE: Alien RPG coming soon...

Update: Like a good Wetland-Yutani drone I pre-ordered. With it immediately included a download of the Quick-Start rules via DriveThruRPG (a gift for preorder).

I haven't had time for a full read, but here is my knee-jerk response...

      • This PDF is gorgeous and not that shitty "kind of a word doc" some game quick start rules throw out. Tons of artwork. 136 pages, so quick start rules, expanded preview rules/systems, and a premade cinematic adventure.
      • d6 based system uaing a hack of the Mutant Year Zero system. Easy to learn. Not fuckoff crunchy like the original Aliens rpg.
      • GM no longer stands for Game Master. It's Game Mother, which is clever and slick because it's a reference to the Mother computer fron Alien and a Queen Alien.
      • CGen looks like it isn't complicated, but theres room for equipment and supplies. I dig that each player gets a signature item (I.e. Ripley's cat, Jonesy) that you cane use once per game to lower stress.
      • Less complicated CGen makes for quick character making, which is key for doing 1-shot cinematic games or dealing with PC death. People bitch less when their precious gets tail-stabbed to death when they can have another precious in 5-10 minutes.

      So far, I'm a fan.

Yes, the loophole gif was perfection, but you absolutely don't want me staff on FUCK MOUNTAIN ORGY MUSH because you don't want the randomness that is my brain coming up with orgy themes.

      • Famous Olympian Night! (Where someone may come as the ultimate fucker, Zeus, but really people just wanna see Greg Louganis fucking Johnny Weir)
      • The Unstoppable Meat Orgy (no sex this night. A BBQ catering company comes in and everyone just eats and goes "Nope, not fuckin after this" just like you do in RL)

      @Rook Interesting idea.

I often joke that Social Manipulation skills are often more dice worthy than a shotgun in your inventory, because technically a well placed lie can recruit cops with shotguns to shoot at the bad man with the gun who is chasing you...because you just robbed him.

I hate to see that stuff overused, but it's all risk vs reward and if people don't min-max, they should have some dice to use in defense.

One thing I HATE seeing is min-maxing and ignoring social skills because nobody uses them anyway, unless theyre needed for some kind of Vampire power.

@Auspice hah. I know. Lemme look through the book and see if I'm down for it.

I'm attending/staffing a game convention in July that may need extra GMs, so a few playthroughs OTT to polish the session, before the con might be in order.

I would need beta testers. Beta players? Testers.
