    • Drop Caps for Expressive Paragraphs on Wikidot

      I've recently started playing with this for a Roman-themed wiki I'm developing for a friend's game. I've always loved the concept of a drop cap, but not all codebases make coding a drop cap easy. Sure, CSS has ways, but it isn't always user-friendly, and you are limited by your fonts.

      Here's a way to do it that creates unique drop caps, and works nicely with most Wikidot pages. It isn't PERFECT, but it's close.

      1. Using an graphic design program (Photoshop, Fireworks, GIMP), create PNG files for each alphabetic letter using the font of your choice. Keep the background transparent. Try to keep these images small. Mine are no more than 55 pixels square (click here for my drop cap library).
      2. Upload your images to a library, as I have done in the above link.
      3. Use the attached code at the beginning of the paragraph you want to add a drop cap, where 'L' is the letter you want to be the drop-cap (and obviously your own wiki address).

      This will add the drop cap. Now, it varies on how close to the top of the paragraph the drop cap sits. I'm still troubleshooting that, but this works pretty nicely as is.

      The only good thing that came out of the book(s) is the TV-show! I read through the books to see if there was any decent theme, but not really... too much teen drama for me! But the show is excellent, particularly in seasons two+.

    • Customize Tabs in Wikidot

      Here's the code to change the entire design of the tabs for Wikidot wikis. I have kept everything very plain here, so it is easy to change to fit your wiki style guide. I've also added a few tips that I've found are helpful for redesigning the tabview code for Wikidot.

      So, some tips:

      1. You can use Google Fonts here in the font sections for content and tabs. It creates unique fonts for these features. I tend to stay away from changing the content font (hello, Verdana, my old friend), but you totally can.
      2. Don't go too crazy with colors here. Try to stay consistent. I'm a huge fan of creating a palette for a wiki, and sticking to it. If you haven't played with http://paletton.com/, it is a really great website for creating color palettes that give both hex and RGB codes for colors. Those RGB codes can be really important if you're playing with transparent elements.

      Seconding Seraphim here.

      The 100 MUSH is a non-consent game with a big emphasis on ICA=ICC. Personally, it is not the job of Staff to attempt to kill PCs at every turn, but put them in harm's way and/or high risk, and see what choices they make and whether or not those choices carry negative, or even life-threatening consequences.

      Clarifying the Consent policy might be necessary.

      In regards to the Senate: we're a PC-lead game. Staff puts out the story arc, throws out hooks and points of interest, but PC action really dictates the direction the game goes. If the Delinquents create a mini society and it thrives before the Adult Arkers come down, then they may actually be able to stand on their own feet -- which would be a deviation from the show, and is something we're okay with.

      Goal is not to create a railroaded game that follows the TV show each step of the way, but start out with a similar storyline and see where the PCs take it. No point in squashing a IC idea because "it might be bad for the game." If it doesn't work ICly, I think we have a smart enough group of players to take that failure and roll with it instead of turning it into an OOC issue.

      Yes, but this is primarily because the theme sets it up that way. On the Ark (where the teenagers came from), there is already a need for macro-level survival (to use Faraday's words). The Ark is the unification of 12 space stations that pooled their resources to survive the ~300 years needed for the planet to no longer being irradiated.

      So, teenagers aren't just expected to lay about being teenagers. They end up in apprenticeships as early as 12 working on particular jobs needed on the space station (often based on what their family already does). So, you have teenagers that are mini-botanists, -doctors, -mechanics, -hydro farmers, -computer engineers, etc. You even have guard cadets who have the combat training in firearms, warcraft, etc.

      Most everyone that has come on the grid, unless they were boxed/jailed before their apprenticeships got anywhere (i.e. the second child app that was boxed at age 12), most have a beginner's to intermediate skill level of their particular skill set. This sets them up for being able to at least figure shit out even if they aren't as skilled as their adult counterparts up in the sky.

      Survival/Apocalypse genres require more storytelling, from my limited perspective of 5 weeks actually running one. Having participated on other survival-style/apocalypse games, I have found trouble getting integrated into the game because I wasn't part of a group app (to fit that micro-survival). So, I would come in, alone, with no one else to integrate with, and end up phasing out after a couple weeks because there was no way to get footing or my character on track (even after reaching out OOCly to see if I could become a new cling-on for an already established group).

      In my opinion, there's two basic sub-genres in the Survival/Apocalypse genre:

      1. Waking Up to Chaos: this is your classic zombie scenario where everyone wakes up in the morning to find their world in total chaos because of some world-changing event. You have to grab whatever shit you can carry and find some people to survive with and then run away as fast as you can from the source of the apocalypse. I guess, @faraday would call this "micro survival."

      2. Post-Apocalyptic/Societal Recovery: this is more in line with themes like The 100 (to some extent, though I think that theme has some of #1 in it, too, particularly from the Ark perspective), Defiance, The Postman, Mad Max... This is where the bad apocalypse is already happened, and the world's landscape has totally changed both physically and culturally. You have a variety of societies that are vastly different from "Earth Norm," and there isn't a lot of happiness or stability, and the world is generally unkind. So you have larger groups (even whole societies) just trying to survive while being in a harsh world surrounded by harsh societies.

      Do I think that these types of genres can support a game longterm? Don't know. I think that once the metaplot is over, you end up with more of a sandbox game where people run their own stories and plots, and maybe split into groups. You end up with a more "typical" game where you have a setting, theme, factions, and players are more or less responsible for their own storytelling with a passive staff helping them along.

      Just throwing my definition out there...

      I interpret a "sandbox" game as something more akin to the video game definition, where a familiar setting is provided, but story is primarily up to the players to generate. Staff is there to approve characters, keep the game running from a code perspective, and generally provide structure without giving much in the ways of plot.

      Sandbox games are usually wide, but shallow in terms of what story is provided by staff, giving players a lot more free reign to create their own RP.

      EDIT: Not saying my definition is right, but I have very little experience with sandboxing, only having dipped my toe into the concept recently on a different game. I have almost entirely operated on what is defined as "open games."

      In my opinion, the shame game is mostly venting and getting out frustrations about a situation, but it is also calling people out on whatever mad mojo they are getting into or putting other people through. Whether it is punitive or rehabilitative is really up to how it is received, not how it is presented.

      If someone comes onto MSB, and bitches about a game, character, or staffer, it is really up to the target or the audience of the bitching to decide whether it is punitive or rehabilitative.

      Personally, I usually respond more from the rehabilitative side of the coin when I'm on the receiving end of the shame game, unless I feel like the source is false. But, I tend to be a "wants to improve" kind of person (though I admit to having my limits -- I want to improve, not bend over backwards to satisfy people, because them I'm just a schmuck).

      Others tend toward the punitive side of the coin, where they take feedback, bitching, venting, and what have you as a negative attack on their person and then feel like they are being unfairly punished or targeted. This usually leads to retaliation.

      This isn't solely about the receiver of the shame game either -- the audience also adds some level of response that can turn it from punitive to rehabilitative, or vice versa. For instance, someone comes on, bitches, posts a log of convo, but others come back with "Uh, you were kinda being a bitch, too," then it could be the source of the shame game that has to decide if the feedback they are getting is punitive or rehabilitative.

      I think in our semi-anonymous community, we're going to vent and bitch and let out frustrations, but we obviously don't mind "name and shame." In fact, we tend to disregard complaints if they are "don't wanna name names, but" kind of complaints. We want names, we want details, because we don't want to end up in a vicious cycle with someone who isn't gonna change (and there's lots of examples of that in our community, too).

      So, yeah... we play the shame game because 1) we want to get out our frustrations, 2) we want to make other people aware of certain games, players, or staffers, and 3) we do kinda hope that we don't have to see repeat behavior.

      Just my thoughts on the matter...

      So, I think the one thing I don't understand is this...

      Why Hawke?

      Hawke is a blank slate. He/she is up to the player in the video game to decide -- male, female, class (Mage, Rogue, Warrior). Does one person get to decide all that, and it can never be altered?

      I'm always wishy-washy with FCs, even if there are a couple games where I play FCs, but Hawke as a playable character seems so... wonk to me. I mean, I played an albino mage Hawke who was anti-Chantry, but then played a dark-skinned rogue Hawke who was all about the Chantry.

      Just curious about that...

      EDIT: Yes, I'm repeating the question asked by @Nausicaa but I think it is a valid... issue.
