man it would be cool if someone made an ATLA movie!

I'm only about halfway through the first season so far, but I gotta say, I feel like this property is brilliant as a series and wouldn't quite work as a movie.

@Kestrel said in Health and Wealth and GrownUp Stuff:

I made a New Years Resolution to stop arguing with strangers over the internet.

That's a stupid resolution. Here is a list of forty-six reasons why you are wrong to make such a resolution.

      1. You have a duty to try to change stangers' minds on the internet.
      2. Arguing on the internet is the most effective way of changing minds.
      3. It also establishes your intellectual superiority.
      4. Not arguing means you agree with them.
      5. Anger is the only worthwhile emotion, so you should constantly cultivate it in your life.
      6. Other people should not be trusted to have their own opinions.
      7. Point 6 is definitely distinct from point 3.
      8. You're a jerk for making me write point 7 with your insinuations.
      9. Actually, you're a jerk for disagreeing with me about the importance of arguing with internet strangers.
      10. Actually actually, you're a jerk because you're basically inferior to me.
      11. Not agreeing with me means you're a member of every group I personally hate, like Flat Earth Society.
      12. Ha ha, look at how dumb you are, thinking the Earth is flat.
      13. No, YOU'RE a strawman! And an ad hominem fallacy!
      14. I don't have to provide links proving anything I just said. Look it up yourself.
      15. The burden of proof lies with you to prove your claims, not me.
      16. If the links you provide disprove what I say, then they're from biased sources and you're stupid for believing them. Keep looking until you find sources that agree with me.
      17. Not that you will, you dumb Flat Earther.
      18. My posts have more upvotes than yours. That means they're right.
      19. I bet your upvotes are just from your dumb friends who support your propaganda.
      20. Or they're your sock puppets.
      21. Lol are you triggered?
      22. I'm not wrong about anything I said, I was just triggering you.
      23. You're a dummy for falling for my genius tactics of tricking you into thinking I'm stupid by saying stupid things to you.
      24. I'm winning this argument because you're mad.
      25. Well if you aren't mad, why would I have said you're mad? Checkmate!
      26. Facts don't care about your feelings.
      27. I'm posting laugh emojis. That means I'm definitely not mad and also you're losing.
      28. This devolution of arguments proves how right I am about internet arguments changing minds, because you secretly changed your mind and agree with me, you just won't admit it because you won't admit you lost.
      29. I'm not projecting, YOU'RE constructing an alternate reality that justifies your refusal to change your mind from your a priori conceptions.
      30. That's a personal attack you just said!
      31. Personal attacks mean you have no convincing argument.
      32. Hey everyone, look at this jerk Kestrel launching personal attacks against me!
      33. You are oppressing me more than anyone in history has ever been oppressed.
      34. You are trying to police my thoughts.
      35. You would send me to a concentration camp to die for disagreeing with you, you fascist.
      36. I'll be honest, I ran out of steam on this list a long time ago, but I feel like continuing the joke long after it should have ended is a funny metajoke given the subject, so I'm still going.
      37. Where was I? Oh yeah. You support genocide.
      38. Also, you're a bigot for arguing with me, because I am a minority based on my beliefs.
      39. Why do you hate free speech so much? Oh right, because you're a fascist.
      40. I don't agree with Nazis but it's a shame the Nazis didn't win so they could take care of people like you.
      41. Not that Nazis ever had concentration camps, that's a hoax perpetuated by international banking.
      42. That's not a conspiracy theory, you're the conspiracy theorist for believing in Flat Earth.
      43. Also, it's not at all suspicious I was so eager to bring Holocaust denial into this.
      44. [nothing, because I got banned for promoting Nazi conspiracy theories]
      45. [sets up a sock puppet account to spread my grudge against you and the admins privately among my circle of "friends," by which I mean people who hate all the people I hate, which I assume is what a friend is]
      46. So in conclusion, your life has been improved by having this argument, and you're definitely not mad for no reason and generally exhausted.

This is why I really have very little trust in our community's willingness to really deal with problems until a game runner proves otherwise, and I operate on the expectation that they will always err on the side of people who harass or have that history until it is too bad to ignore.

Yeah. That's the fragile part of the fragile happiness I mentioned. As much as I'm glad that victims are getting a voice and the community seems to be supportive, I've been through too much to believe that the support is generally more than lip service, saying the things you'd expect good people to say while doing nothing. I hope I'm wrong but I don't really think so.

Still. It's the kind of day where I need to hold on to the good feelings rather than the fear, so I'm gonna do that for now.

@Sunny said in A bit of trouble on Firefly:

I mean, MSB isn't safe. I know it's not safe, and when I'm feeling unwell I avoid it because it's unsafe. And I don't mean in the Hogpit way, I mean in the 'if I'm actively harassed, if someone is trying to harm me, if somebody shows up and starts doing genuinely bad things I can trust that the people running it will help' -- it's just not safe around here. I participate in a lot of places that aren't safe, by choice and with my eyes open -- but yeah. This community as a whole is terrible for that, and even MSB is really, really unsafe in that fashion.

I don't have anything to add here, just... letting you know I see you and you're not alone.

What do you guys eat when you literally can't be fucked to make anything difficult?

Realistically? A bag of potato chips, or drive-thru.

A super easy comfort food recipe is pasta aglio e olio, though. While you boil a box of pasta al dente, heat half a cup of olive oil in a frying pan over medium heat, crush a head of garlic into the oil and brown it (most recipes tell you to slice it, but that's a suboptimal way to get the garlic evenly spread, I say), and toss the pasta into the garlic-infused oil. Juice a large lemon into it. Most recipes tell you to add a ton of parsley, and you can do that if you want, but it's not crazy necessary. You have a meal full of carbs and heart-helpful garlic that takes maybe twelve minutes to wake.

I have never known any amount of armchair psychology to be useful to anyone. We're not the ones who are going to solve whatever's wrong with that guy. Best just to keep them out of our lives, imo.

I find it very useful. If I know what's precisely wrong with the kinds of people liable to make my life worse, and I know how to spot early warning signs of their behaviour, then I know how to protect myself.

Did this guy make my life worse? No. Not even a little bit. But there are a million other guys like him out there, and they are everywhere. They're incredibly predictable and not nearly as special as they like to think. It doesn't hurt to go through life with a radar in mind.

Agreed. It's not about fixing him; fixing him is his own problem. It's about making the patterns easier to identify so other people can recognize them.

@alzie I believe it is forbidden to currently explain what happened here. Suffice to say a lot of people got justifiably angry at one another, and let that justifiable anger lead to some less justifiable behaviors. I don't want to sound disingenuous by pretending I think everyone involved is equally culpable or that I don't have a side, but even so, I think it is fair to say no person involved (myself included) did anything that drenched themself in glory.

So if Kestrel reports a Klansman for being at a Klan rally, the effects of that on the Klansman's family belong more to Kestrel than to the Klansman who chose to be at the rally, who chose to be a Klansman, who chose to tie his family's fortune to his Klan participation? Because I feel like it's on the Klansman, and on the Klansman's SO who realistically had to know what they were getting into.

I'm just saying as someone who doesn't even know what Gloomhaven is, "I am extremely justified in yucking your yum, so quit asking me to stop" is a pretty weird hill to die on, such that I'm concerned maybe something else is going on. Are you a thousand percent positive this wouldn't be a good time to take a break, and come back later when you feel more fresh?

Oh. Yeah, that happens. Fallcoast's house rules specifically make it cheaper to be The Sexiest One Of Them All, so it's a little more pronounced here than a lot of places. I have too much sympathy to judge; it's hard to not wish you were one of the beautiful people.

Puppy play time. It's just the best.

A coworker's husband brought their baby puppy in to work for her to take back home (they work different shifts and didn't want to leave the babypupper alone), so I got to play with a baby chihuahua for a few minutes at work and anyway, the moral of the story is it should be required by law that workplaces provide their employees with puppies to play with for a few minutes every shift.

    • RE: The All-New Down With OPP Thread

@Lithium I am not on the game you were on. I'm in a Discord server with some friends who are on the game you were on. I have no direct experience of you, and no right to speak for anyone who spoke to me in confidence, so I cannot provide you the specific list of verifiable or falsifiable allegations I'm sure you want. And, for the record, I absolutely get you wanting specific allegations. As someone who once lost a job over accusations of things I am quite sure I did not do, I am still haunted years later wondering what specifically anyone thinks I did. It drives me crazy as I wonder if I somehow did the things I was accused of but was too delusional to know I was doing them, or if someone had a reason to tell lies about me.

But I can say that despite not being on that game and not knowing who you are, I know four people who have told me directly that they felt very uncomfortable around your characters and would avoid scenes you were in. I do not say this to indicate you're guilty of anything--I don't even know what specific metaphorical charges have been leveled against you--but because if someone like me can hear about it from so many people, it may indicate something about the way you approach people needs reflection and adjustment.

If I could be more helpful to you, I would. This is as constructive as circumstances allow me to be. If you wish to hear from someone who does have knowledge of you and went out of their way to avoid you, then perhaps a more contrite tone with a focus on repairing relationships over defending your reputation would convince them to reach out to you, or perhaps not. In either event, it seems you must rely on the charity of those who were present.
