I want to play the new Spider-Man game because Miles is the second-best Spider-Man ever (Gwen is the best), but my connection is so shit I have thirty hours of download time left. Fuck off, Playstation.

@kk Feel you one hundred percent on every part of it. My facility has face shields rather than goggles, but I hate those damn things. The thin, wavery plastic distorts light so badly I wonder if looking through one is what it's like to go blind. Everything is so dim I can't see details, or barely even colors, just shapes.

Fellow four-eyed nerds who also wear facemasks!

Do your glasses fog up when you breathe?

Wearing my glasses over my mask is the best solution I've found. This has its own problems. Disposables have that metal nose piece that makes them hard to fit under my glasses' nose piece, and cloth masks that don't have them sometimes ride up until they bump against my lower eyelids, but I've just made peace that this is my life now. I figure if that's the biggest annoyance I have to deal with in a day, I'm probably coming out ahead in life.

I realise this won't ring any bells outside Denmark, but that's a rather bloody huge cultural icon having gone on ahead.

Not to change the subject, but "having gone on ahead" is the most beautiful euphemism I've ever heard for it. Thank you for sharing it, and I'm so sorry for your loss.

This hurts more than I expected it to. I'm trying to comfort myself with reminders that dying at home, surrounded by friends, and probably being given the best painkillers money can buy after having lived eight decades is one of the best ways to go, but... still. I didn't know Alex Trebek, so it's not like this is a personal loss, but it feels like a cultural one; like American society as a whole is diminished by his absence.

Oof. Great, now I'm going to work crying.

@Sunny I get the feeling this thread will get moved to the Hog Pit if I say what I think about someone who gets a pass on advocating for beating women because he once did a good job pretending to be a spy who drives cool cars, so let me just say I don't think you're being sensitive.

When you're on a social media blackout because you don't want to get your hopes up over an event you know will be strung out for weeks or months in court, and your goddamn phone beeps a news alert at you. Fuck you, phone, do you know what my heart did just then?

      Random She-Ra thought.

      ***=SFW content, just spoilery***

      click to show

Catra attempts to commit suicide in S5E3 because she knows she needs to change but can't see a way out. She lives not because Adora brings her back to life, but because she changes enough to see that self-destruction isn't the only way out.

Shadow-Weaver commits suicide in S5E13. She also knows she needs to change and can't see a way out, but she can't bring herself to change as Catra does; even her last words are abuse against her children. Without that ability to change, Shadow-Weaver dies. In that moment it becomes clear where Catra got the idea to even try to kill herself, and how much work she has left to do to stop being the person Shadow-Weaver sculpted her to be.

@SilentHills I know your feeling. My work situation is coconuts right now, and that compared with the seasonal shit is affecting my mental health in ways I won't describe on a public board. I hope things get better for you soon. You're not alone.

@RDC Are Abyssals even on the docket yet? I kind of thought they've only gotten as far as finishing the Lunars and prepping the Exigents.

Do you mind if I ask why the second idea works better for you?

My personal experience with Realm games hasn't been terribly positive. There has tended to form a hierarchy based around who has the most obsessively devoured trivia around the society as described in canon that feels pretty exclusionary to someone who likes the game but doesn't have the money to buy all the books or the time to cross-reference factoids on social media with the creators. That may have just been part of the toxic culture surrounding second edition, but either way, it left an impression on me.

@Misadventure said in What do player-STs need?:

Does anyone feel as a player that there is something that player-STs definitely could use from staff, even if its been mentioned?

Just clear communication. I come mostly from a background of comic book games, where the utter obsession with continuity drives me mad, and there have been so many times that I try to run a plot, get it approved, and then at the last moment it's canceled because someone else on the food chain had not communicated whether this or that NPC or aspect of the universe is permitted to be used because it doesn't fit with their vision of what the world should be.

@GreenFlashlight Not specifically, but when you can manage planet wide communications with any handheld device, is localized wifi worth mentioning other than as a downgrade.

I suppose I'm just thinking of all the times someone had to walk from the bridge to engineering or wherever with a data padd instead of just, I dunno, emailing Geordi's work account with the specs for whatever damn thing they needed to make the deflector dish do this episode.

I'm trying to remember if any of the Star Trek shows of the eighties through the aughts ever guessed wifi would be a thing. I don't think they did. It seems like if you wanted to look something up, you had to go to a console or download it to a padd or whatever.
