"Well, we're past the return date. But I could give you store credit."
"Isn't there something you could do for me?"
"Weeeell... I could give you store credit for non-returnable merchandise instead of telling you to suck on a tailpipe?"

@Sparks The Captal's Tower?
Got it in one guess.
Ask @Aria about that one...
I mean, Martin's working on a narrative that can be generously described as 'sprawling.' And yeah, he doesn't have what you'd call the strongest work ethic. (He's frequently taken breaks because he's bummed over a sports franchise or a political development. Not casting stones here, my house is spun sugar at best...)
And yeah, he feels like he's under a lot of pressure since the IP he's working on has become a defining Nerd Thing.
Dude takes his time.

RE: Game of Thrones
I figure that establishing Jon as a dragon-rider might be an important plot point, if the last scene throws a wrench into the gears of puppy and snookums' relationship.

RE: Strange Facts
French nobles were paid to post guards at potato fields and let peasants 'steal' them, to convince the French to adopt tubers as a foodstuff.
US courts used to limit the amount of lobster prisoners could be fed, based on the 'cruel and unusual punishment' clause.

@surreality No one was shaming anyone for caring about Notre Dame but you tilt at those windmills I guess?? Have to fill the day somehow.
Okay, c'mon, you made a post to discourage people from donating to the Notre Dame reconstruction because something else deserved the money more. Don't pretend that's coming out of nowhere.

Not to unnecessarily politicize, but the fact that a few French oligarchs came out to fund the project but no American capitalists came out to donate to fix these relatively small churches is telling about the state of culture and religion in the United States.
It's really hard to compare the response when one of the churches in question is also a national heritage museum/historical site/national landmark/UNESCO world heritage site.

All of the rose windows are gone; I've not yet seen anything on the remainder of the windows
I'm seeing reports that the la Rosace Nord "seems to have held."

This is the main hope that I have that this was an accident. I hope that restoration company has good insurance.
I don't know how you'd even begin to do a cost assessment for "accidentally burned down Notre Dame du Paris."

@Wretched This is me with Gladiator. I have never, ever made it through that movie. I've passed out, gotten sick, had the power go out, and gotten into a fight with the guy I was watching it with, so I left.
'Gladiator' is the name of his sled.

RE: Concerts & Goth Stuff
@Ghost You mentioned the Offspring, and I was just amused that when we saw them a few years back (they were doing all of Smash), they were on last for the show. Dexter started off addressing the crowd to the effects of "and thanks to all of you for not leaving after the Vandals! I probably wouldn't have stayed to see us after the Vandals!"

And if you don't get a 3.5 average monthly review you're placed on probation.
Shiiiiiit, 3.5 nothing. Everywhere I've worked with those stupid fucking surveys, anything less than a 5 is considered a 0.
I can only assume some coked-out MBA douchebag who's never set foot in a retail establishment (or possibly a space alien from planet Zog who's never seen a hoo-man in the flesh, given some of the marketing materials corporate keeps sending) figures that every customer should be 'highly satisfied' every time or the plebes aren't doing their job.

RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.
@Sparks Related, but:
Being an entitled jackass might, at times, serve to get general-you-the-customer what you want rather than deal with general-your bullshit. And hey, sometimes people over my head are going to cave, and what they say goes.
But at whatever level of control I have? The person who comes in with "hey, I know this is past the date, but could you maybe" I might relax the rules for. The soccer mom who demands that they not apply gets the ohh-so-sorry-it's-policy, complete with the clicking tongue and pained intake of breath.

RE: RL Anger
@Sparks Shit, even the garbage retail/food service jobs I've applied to have a "is it cool to call your current job y/n" box.

RE: Sexuality: IC and OOC
@Rinel said in Sexuality: IC and OOC:
The bias I've seen in MU* dom against women playing men is interesting to me. My non-MU* RP history has basically consisted of most of my RP acquaintances saying "lol dude why do you keep making female characters are you gay or something."
Most MUSHes have (or have had) a majority female playerbase. Most in-person RP is (or has been) a majority male playerbase. Neither of these are 100% true and I think the latter, at least, has been changing for a while, but still.
@Aria and I both did some of our earliest online RP on a predominantly male space (the White Wolf hosted javachat games), and those were majority male, so the crossgender RP sterotype was a dude playing a lesbian in a leather body suit with tits out to here. (This was when you still got 'there are no women on the internet' jokes.) Then I went onto MU* gaming and the steriotype was a woman playing a waifish yaoi twink.
@saosmash said in Sexuality: IC and OOC:Like, sorry for double post, but to clarify, my point was more that manic pixie dreamgirl is one of those tropes that is definitely popularized based on its relevance to MEN, and I don't doubt that dudes playing lesbians often think they are being "chic" about this, but I've seen female players fall into the same trap. I think the extensive appearance of the trope in all forms of media contributes to that a great deal. People thinking that it's a "right" way to play a woman because that's how they seem women portrayed all over the place -- even people who should know better.
...is it awful that one of the concepts that's been bouncing in my head for a while is an Acanthus Manic Pixie Nightmare Girl? Like, a free spirit who barges into people's lives, does her best to convince them to ignore things like 'oblgations' or 'property rights' until she gets it into her head to fuck off and leave them stranded three states from home with an empty bank account and a court date?

RE: Sexuality: IC and OOC
Hm.
So I'm a mostly straight dude, and most of my MU* characters have been mostly straight dudes. My PBP characters are a lot more balanced, with maybe a slight incline toward women. (Might have something to do with most of my MU*ing for the last few years being at the request of my IRL significant other...)
The character I still kinda think of as 'my character' was kinda bisexual but that mostly wound up an informed trait. My most blatantly omnisexual dude was pretty much a 'predatory bisexual' stereotype; dunno if being a vampire makes that better? Worse?
I've never played a gay woman, possibly to keep from inadvertently falling into the whole... thing... with men playing their teenage wank fantasies in front of everyone. A few bisexual women. I don't think I've been obviously pegged as a dude-player?

Nnnnhhh.
That's a real kick in the teeth.
(I'm sorry I heart you don't hurt me)
UPDATE: Someone stole my catalytic converter. Cut it right out of the exhaust system. In the middle of the night. In my garage bay. Next to two much more expensive cars.
(edit: But that was a funny pun. I lol'd.)
Be careful. I've actually heard of people who do it like this:
*Steal <part> from less-expensive car
*Wait a few weeks
*Steal brand-new replacement <part> from same car
