Linode ranges from $5 and up for it, but for me its killer feature is lish.
Lish allows you to use SSH to get direct console access. There's various times when just ssh isn't good enough: like when doing a dist-upgrade on ubuntu. Or if you screw up the firewall, ahem.
With Lish, I can use either the web client or any random ssh client to access the linode's console. Or issue commands like boot and the like.
On the hosting question I can't recommend Linode more. And I'm not even giving you a referral link.
Small suggestion... I'm not sure if M1963 uses a wiki, but if you are utilizing a wiki, I threw together a command I call +getcast, which basically grabs not only the list of players in the room, but then processes their +finger information to pull their wiki site. It then outputs
[[Page Name|Bit Name]]
.If the logs are getting posted on the wiki, it really saves some annoyance.
We have this. +log/capture logger captures the current date, the location, and everyone in the scene all for inclusion in the log.
There's separate commands to adjust these individually, but generally this is what people do:
drop logger
+log/on logger
+log/capture logger
<scene>
+log/post logger=social/My Title=In which Ixokai and Bob become friends
And that gets posted to www.marvel-1963.com/log:1964-06-27_-_My_Title, and it includes the wiki output and (more importantly) tags the log with the characters involved (and social). The tagging is important because our entire activity tracking system keys off of tags.
Now that we've moved from Penn to Rhost on M1963, I've expanded the Rhost loggers to allow posting from in-game directly to the website.
One does: +log/post logger=plot avengers plot-name/Title Of Log=Summary Of Action
Where 'plot avengers plot-name' are the tags the log should have. (First tag must be either Plot or Social.)
Its only possible if you have at least a Pro Lite wikidot account and requires some setup-- but if anyone is on Rhost and wikidot and wants this, PM me and I'll share with you the scripts and how to make it all go.
Also this is one of those insane people who actually use their phone to MUSH when away from the computer, so he'd regularly phone-connect just to shoot the shit.
So yeah, worried
@Jim-Nanban Oh, they also offer a backup service: the cost varies by the linode size, for the small one its $2/mo. For $5/mo, that sounds like a lot, but its actually quite a lot of utility. They automatically take a daily and weekly backup of your instance, and store the last 2 weeklies, plus you can take a manual backup at any time and store it as long as you like. Restoring is easy as just clicking a link (you can restore it to your current VM (overwriting it), or restore to a new linode-- and since they prorate costs, if you have that new linode for only two hours you are only really paying a few cents while its up and you're digging data out of it before closing it down and deleting the new VM.
I don't rely on their backup service, I use Rhost's excellent backup_flat script to mail myself a backup daily, but its always a good thing to have redundant backups.
They're an all SSD service these days, they don't overload machines like some supercheap VM providers do. I've been running my hobby projects off of a $20/mo 4GB linode for years now and could not be happier. Only reason we don't use it at work is because we have to use AWS for some stuff (windows hosting, bleah) and my bosses like having everything in one place.
I can't speak to ever using AWS, we use it at work to... satisfactory results, but it takes some work.
That said, I host my game(s) on Linode. Its a hefty one as it does a variety of other things, but the $5/mo linode tier is very cheap and more then a mush needs, plus Linode is just excellent in support and reliability.
EDIT:
Also, Lish is the best thing since sliced bread. I know lots of services offer a way to get console access to your VM, but I've had no end of problems from them from every host I've ever been on. Especially the web based ones (Rackspace's was the worst)
Lish, though? You SSH into a special address, log in with your Linode account credentials, and ssh connects to the console -- not a ssh server on your machine, instead you get access to the console itself. So if you screw something up (say, you install a firewall and oops and forget to add ssh access?), you just use lish to get direct access.
Sorry, there's no way to delay function execution. While a function is being evaluated everything else in the MU[SH|X] is halted waiting for it to complete. Despite appearances, MU{SH|X] is actually single-threaded and only one thing is ever done at a time.
@wait is how you do this: and it works by 'queueing' a command to run at a later point approximately X seconds in the future.
For this sort of thing you really don't want to do functions: @dolist and @wait are really the tools for the job.
@Wavert I make a point as staff to have an alt in +ooc to monitor the situation. And deal with stuff that arises. Its not always immediate: sometimes I can only fix the drama after, but still. I have awareness of what's gone on.
On M1963, we banned two players (one was just a guest) for +ooc behavior, and gave a warning to a third and they took it well. Very rarely but every so often a: hey, guys? Relax, sort of declaration goes a long way.
@faraday said in PC antagonism done right:
Antagonism makes for good stories, but in a MU* environment I think it's a lost cause. Mostly for the reasons you mentioned, but it's even more than that. Let's pretend that there's a totally mature player who won't start OOC drama, needs no encouragement to play antagonism, and is an awesome RPer. I don't want that person playing my character's antagonist, I want them playing my friend.
Man I could not disagree more. If I can find someone who is cool, who I know is OOCly not crazy, who will be wanting to play a rival, antagonist or enemy, I'd value that person 100x more as my antagonist then my friend.
Making friends is easy.
Having meaningful rivalry (where its entirely IC and doesn't bleed over into OOC powergaming) is the true gems and value of what makes quality.
wistful sigh
I don't really have anything to say but: I wish I was still playing this.

@ixokai WHAT?! ...
Well, this changes everything.
I know right? It totally changes everything in how I play. Before I had SO MANY freaking points as the PC but never used any of the powers, I'd just swap in/out of my 'anti shield' power from time to time.
Now I have my long-range biotic detonation powerset, my up close vanguard powerset, my anti-shields powerset, and my sniper powerset. And this time I'm actually USING profiles-- my first playthrough I was pure-engineer because its bad enough swapping powers in/out of one tree, I wasn't going to do it in three.

Meanwhile, twenty light-years away, the same race has been dealing with humans for about a year.

20 hours in and I feel like I'm getting to the core plot. And I just got an achievement called "almost there", with only two planets at 100% viability. Ironic since I just did something that almost doubled the number of systems I could get to. Halfway there, more like!
I do have to say that I appreciate how you don't have to be a completionist to get 100% viability on a planet.
I note getting the five planets to 100% and the core plot are actually very separate. You can get the core plot done pretty quick and still have work on planets to do. On my first play through I put off the core plot until all my planets were done just because I wanted to.
That said:
Oh my god. Go into Profiles, and on the bottom hit Favorites. You can save your loadout (profile + 3 current abilities) to a favorite slot and quickly swap out with F1-F4. My first playthrough I was going nuts with constantly swapping abilities manually. Granted, it puts all three abilities on cooldown when you swap but that's what cover is for.

I think it's less about psyche profiling as it is we have a whole slew of people doing jobs that they didn't expect/weren't slotted for. IE, Jack Wadd might have been selected as a gardener. He's a good gardener. He really knows his shit <literally> Now, because of Reasons, they don't need gardeners. They need Hydraulic Techs. Jack Wadd is now a Hydraulic tech and has only a passing knowledge of how it works <water goes through tubes>, very little EVA experience and, worse, is mildly claustrophobic - hence, being a gardner and not someone who runs around in a space suit.
But, they need him to be a Hydraulic Tech.
I dunno, I swear I thought I read that all Initiative personnel were cross-trained in multiple fields expressly for this purpose.

I want to kill every single Exile. Self-righteous fucks. Any option that fucks them over harder, I take.
Then again, on the flip side, if I can throw Tann off his throne, I'll do that too.
Same, both. I frankly am astonished the Andromeda Initiative didn't have better psych profiling. Then again Tann was never supposed to have anything remotely like a throne to begin with. He's an accountant.
Question: Is there anything special I have to do to unlock the final memory in Sam? I got all the memory triggers but it said I have to find a way to unlock it, but I'm not sure if its something I need to find and thus miss (And I desperately do not want to miss it), or if it'll happen as part of the main quest line.
EDIT: Nevermind
@Insomnia said in Mass Effect: Andromeda: The Thread:
@ixokai That's true, but the complaint also was that they said more options and didn't really follow through. They did though, with seven for male, and seven options for female. It's what, two same sex, two hetero options, and two bisexual, and one mono gendered option. (Asari look female, but that isn't how they reproduce. I get it it sucks if you don't like the look but if you are a female and have no interest in hot, alien girl on girl action, you only have 1 romance option.)
Seven options for a video game that has actual sex scenes. Even from a company that let you bone sexy aliens before. So I guess I was responding more to the wish they had carried through comment than the two comment.
I don't know that you're seeing the point.
For a gay male Ryder, there are two choices. Not seven. (And not one can be a regular mission companion)
For a gay female Ryder, there are four. (And two can be a regular mission companion)
Granted, I'm counting the asari as female here. I know by theme they are mono-gendered but I stand by that.
The 'bisexuals' are all female-ish, except Reyes (the second gay male option).
No, really, I am unhappy with this aspect of things. I don't especially like either Gil or Reyes, but feel I have to pick between one. Sooo.... uh.... whatever. I don't care. Yes, a Fem-Ryder has seven choices. But my Gay-Ryder has two. That's the point.
I'd have been happy if only the obvious choice would be able to be romanced, especially since the jerk took to being shirtless for a few days after I hit on him and he turned me down. Hmph.

Things I'm Less Impressed With:
- We were promised that there would be more romance options available. If you're playing male Ryder and want to romance a male character, your options are limited to 2, neither of which are any of your primary companions, unlike female Ryder's veritable plethora of options, and the obvious one is out. Which is super lame. Bioware could have delivered on this promise so, so much better.
Wait, there's 2? I only see Gil as an option.
I found it... weird, that like, one day I hit on 'the obvious one' and he says he's not into guys and then like the next day he's hanging around shirtless around me and I'm like: ???
There are more than 2, putting behind a link because spoilers And they've been adding to it as they find them. (7 options each so far. Some of the characters overlap and go both ways).
The link says two... Note the original message: if you are playing a male Ryder and want to romance a male.
