Players are already expected to buy and/or download the book. Downloading chummer isn't the biggest hurdle, and it would make CG easier than self-coding it...right?

Doesn't this make a game 'for players who use windows only' then?

@balerion Now do you reccommend a "roster" (that seems to be the general term around here for a already CGed character) character because then their skills and stuff are in proper place for the type of character? TBH I love being in dragons and magic and medieval worlds but I am not super huge into the politics and court, I would much rather just male a character that lives as part of court but has no majestic goals of obtaining a higher rank or the throne.

I don't speak for Balerion or this game at all, but --

It's worth nothing there's (virtually) no magic or dragons in this world. The dragons are extinct as of uhh, a decade or two ago I think?, (almost) no one believes in anything magical. The Westerosi empire was built on the back of dragons but that's an era of memory.

Most of ASOIAF is all about human politics.

I still think ME3 would've had a more interesting ending if they went with Simulation Theory; the universe of the Mass Effect trilogy was a simulation, thus everyone was synthetic life; the program was to run various civilization models, and the Reapers were the code that every so often came through to wipe it clean on a cycle and see what happened with the remains of those civilizations as the 'seeds' for the next ones. And so the Crucible would've let you reach out to try to convince the entities who were running the simulation to let this round of civilizations live.

I mean, it wouldn't necessarily have been a good ending, but it would've been an interesting one.

Doesn't that run into the same problem that the RGB ending had? That it suddenly dumped some brand new story on you that basically invalidated all your choices and work up to that point?

@ganymede I never got the hate for Andromeda, it was a different story and not even a bad one. The only beef I ever really had was all the NPC's looking the same for the Asari.

I actually liked Andromeda, and will likely do another play-through. I enjoyed the Kett and the Revenant stories -- some people complained of a lack of diversity of alien species but I think they were missing that Andromeda was set in one sector and not the whole galaxy. If you read the lore on the galaxy map/exploration in prior ME games, very rarely are more then one or two sentient species really active in a particular sector.

I had basically two main complaints: 1) Yeah the Asari, and 2) the worlds.

You had the desert-with-radiation, the desert-with-acid, the desert-with-heat, the ice world and the jungle world. I know the story says these worlds shouldn't be nice and I get it, but why couldn't there be just one desert world and the other two have broken down into weird ways-- like the first earth/human planet you landed on was weird?

Anyways I don't know why I feel the urge to defend Andromeda so long later when I avoided it for the most part when the game was actually out and receiving all the criticism. 🙂

What you could consider is giving a different kind of structure for them to do on their downtime. Classes, for example; set up a Watcher supernatural school-within-the-school complete with tests, grades, teacher aides, things going wrong during spellcasting 101... just hand things for PCs to do with each other other than fight monsters of the week or TSrelationship drama which is great as gravy but very soon would get them idlying.

This sounds like it sorta assumes all the PCs are in a team, doesn't it, if they're all (or most) in some Watcher Academy? I mean in theory most people on a Buffy mush will be on the same side but they may not be actually affiliated directly.

I dunno about other peoples experiences on prior Buffy mushes, but establishing then doing team-building exercises with Sammy's team on MK was a lot of fun. We were aware of other teams in the city and would work together but it was organic.

I'm not saying there shouldn't be any mush wide open for anyone stuff to do-- but I think you have to be careful you don't lose the smallness of the Buffy/scooby scale that's IMHO so important to the right feel of a game. Its a personal 'us vs monsters', if we're a part of the Watcher's Army that's a very different feel.

@ixokai I staffed Devilshire for three years. People would stack things (or try) that created ridiculously overpowered characters. We ended up making lots and lots of house rules about it and at one point rewrote a ton of the offered packages. Some of the pre-built demons were ridiculous. People were always finding ways to try to start with Dex 9 or 10. Or have that character that couldn't take damage or be killed. And they were very creative with how they tried to do it! We would think we wrote or ruled out ways to abuse the system and then we'd get another crazy app.

And I staffed at Mystick Krewe for...however long it was, I'm well aware of what people will try. I just don't think its really that hard to deal with. Disallow stacking packages, don't allow more then +4 to any one stat and +8(?) to all stats in particular in a package, limit how many drawbacks are allowed. Beyond that, app staff should just feel free to say no. Some combinations just aren't allowed. (That said can't take damage or be killed I don't see why those are considered a big deal)

The real problem is high dex itself needs to be HR'd so people don't TRY to start with Dex 9 or 10. The unisystem multi action rules are broken AF.

Willow cast a spell? Mages sound OP.

I know you're joking but it is more amusing to me that on the show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, witches are in fact the most powerful agents. Buffy calls Willow her Big Gun at several points.

      That said:

is the Charmed series related in any way to Buffy and Angel? They seem very similar

      shudder No not at all.

@quinn said in Potential Buffy Game:

If you're doing powers, have people run through your chargen trying to break it. People will come up with the weirdest combos that technically aren't against the rules but are totally broken.

In my experience across like two and a half Buffy games (the half being Devilshire which I only played at and didn't staff), this isn't an issue at all. Unisystem and the Buffy/Angel RPG simply doesn't work like that.

There are three places where 'broken' comes into play: 1) Stacking packages [suggested HR: You can have no more then 2 packages, and there can be no overlap], 2) you need a HR about Dexterity and extra turns because otherwise Dex is flat out the most important stat and highest Dex wins, and 3) You have to handle magic's consequences well, especially if you're not having slots.

Much as it would tickle me to see a Pittsburgh game, I'm not sure it has the same degree of built-in drama as some of the other places mentioned. You don't have the cultural diversity of Evanston (as @hedgehog mentioned), nor the political shenanigans of Austin (as @AeriaNyx mentioned), nor the breadth of plot hooks that Dayton offers (as @Ganymede mentioned). It's got bridges and a gaggle of universities and... not a lot else worth talking about.

See, that was a pro to me and is one thing I considered. It seemed like a grown up Sunnydale.

Pittsburgh, the City of Bridges as a "City of Bridges" (to other dimensions) is a wonderful idea. Its a city that mixes the ultra-modern high-tech with urban decay and absurdly old architecture. 400-year old coal mines underneath entire sections of the city, plenty of buildings (--plenty--) from the 18th century still very common - thats a decent idea.

Yeah I looked long and hard in picking it, its a great city.

But the thing that kills mushing is the extreme OCD; the 'I want to play the exact character with minor variations on every mush, in this ONE THEME, that I've done for XXX years and refuse to vary on'. Guess what? I'm sure Mexico has teens and young adults struggling with themselves, too! (And vampires!) Hell, I bet Dublin, Ireland, Johannesburgh, South Africa, and Paris... ....all have vampires! Its sad to watch the hobby decay from a writing pasttime into an OCD-outlet pasttime.

I don't think this is at all the reason why you don't see games in settings like that. Its that most of us int his hobby are American and we suck at representing other cultures well at all. Every non-American based mush i've ever been on (and back in the day there weren't completely uncommon) basically sucked because everyone was American in it or did no effort in portraying themselves as anything non-American. They all sucked as a result.

That being said, I think the Pittsburgh idea is a good one.

I have a fully built (built! Not per se descd, though some is) and +map'd out Pittsburgh grid (note: rhost) I could donate if its liked.

The last Buffy game I was going to make I was going to set into Pittsburgh, the City of Bridges. And have it be unknowingly a trans-dimensional intersection point-- or at least, to have one. That something is trying to get out of. There was plot fu to that.

@zombiegenesis said in Potential Buffy Game:

@ixokai My understanding, and I could be wrong, is that any potential slayer born post-Willow's spell would be active. So anyone born after the show went off the air would become a Slayer at some point (age 12 or 13?) So there could have been new slayers popping up from the end of the show till now meaning slayer ages could range from 12 - 38 or so? Again, unless I'm misunderstanding how the spell worked? And even then we could always house rule it I suppose.

Oh no, in fact, that's a big deal. You could always decide to HR that away, but I LIKE that about the post-Buffy season, it creates a sorta tension: the Slayers need to WIN before its too late. Otherwise a post-Buffy world is almost too easy. There's slayers everywhere.

The spell with the scythe tapped into the well of power the Shadow Men created that was supposed to forever empower Slayers. (That well of power was a big ass demon's soul/power/whatever). There's a lot of power in that well, because hell, Slayers don't have long half-lives. It popped off the handle and poured pour into everyone.

Every Potential who was alive at the time was activated.

So now there's a lot of slayers! Yay!

Except the pool of power that makes Slayers is now empty. It'll take centuries to replenish.

So once all these Slayers are dead there won't be any more. omnious voice

@zombiegenesis said in Potential Buffy Game:

1: Put it in a big city that hasn't been explored in the Buffy-verse(so not L.A.)

I like big city, though I'd try to go medium-big, but what the hell does that mean. There should be some sort of supernatural lure, ideally not a hellmouth, that gives a why there's so many supers around and no one is noticing big time. Can make something weird up.

2: Have it be in real time since the show went off the air. So it's been 15 years since all the potential slayers were made active.
3: No limit on slayers aside from them having to be women. Given the time period since all slayers were made active this is all the current generation has known, Buffy may even be a legend at this point (ala Luke Skywalker).

IMHO, these are problematic. #1 means that slayers HAVE to be basically age 28-33, and now almost have to have 15 years of experience so are easily veterans or it doesn't really make sense.

Buffy doesn't have to be played in a school setting but if you take "young-adult" out of it you lose a LOT, imho.

(Aside: Why would Buffy be a legend? What if someone wants to play a slayer who was there WITH Buffy? This isn't all the current generation has known. They were regular girls, many then got hunted and barely escaped their lives until their activation. There's a clear before/after though.)

I'd heave the entire series up and transplant it 12-13 years in the future and plop it down and tell people to correct for pop culture references in their heads.

So the Bringers attempted to wipe out the Potentials, Buffy gathered as many up as she could. activated the entire line. Won, barely.

Now what? Buffy is in Rome coordinating slayer-squads with the new, less dickish Watcher Council.

5: No real limits on what PCs could be. If it was in the Buffy/Angel core rules I think it should be supported on the game.

If I ever made my dream Buffy game, I'd support custom powers too, personally.

Off the top of my head, you'd need to think about how you want to handle white vs black magic vs just magic addiction in general; set some limit on packages (my HR is always no more then 2 with no overlaps in features)
