Knee Deep where one of the MUSH communities own (Brody from Otherspace) was on the development team. Not on sale, still gonna buy it.
Burning Post II is one of those games that I'd suggest to MUD players looking to transition to MUSHes or MUSH players looking to try a MUD without going full hack and slash. I played there for a little while and never once used any coded systems besides travel and emotes.
Character Concept Contest (any setting, genre, or game)
http://optionalrealities.com/forums/index.php?topic=198.0
This might be the breakout contest for musoapbox users to take 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. No more pesky restrictions or game mechanics in it. Just good old character pitching.
I have done some research and the game asks (at a very early point) for real world information: cell phone, age, gender, and address. I am personally leery of that kind of stuff but it is my understanding it is part of the intended game experience to immerse their players by having them interact with the real world as part of the game.
My Purchase Regrets was the original Dark Souls on PC. I wasn't aware it was such a horrible port and due to how I have my computers setup (for work security) applying the fixes that players made for the companies shitty setup takes me like an extra 6 hours.
I bought Planetary Annihilation against my own better judgement. I loved, absolutely loved the kickstarter but the company kind of fucked up development and the game isn't as good as I'd hoped even at the sale price. I wish more developers would look at Pillar's of Eternity and how they handled their kickstarter and delivery. Though obviously they just finished development and release recently, but still they handled themselves very well and appeased most of their funders.
This thread has transcended its original purpose and gone somewhere special. Never did I think such a text-based game would exist. It brought a tear to my eye (not being sarcastic, am exaggerating the tear).
Question for MUSHes
MUSHes appear to have a fairly high amount of player sharing. However the chargen is a little rough (at least for a MUD guy coming in). Have tutorial/newbie friendly chargens ever been explored as a means to increase new player retention? You know the people who find your game, never played any text-based games, try it out and might be overwhelmed immediately if not handheld?
I don't think we have anything particularly interesting to the MUSH community this week over at OR. So in lieu of an article or a thread link I'll give you guys a few days head start on a cash contest for July.
Character Concepts! Provide us with a past, present, or future character concept you have or want to make. This includes description, short history, personality blurb, and an example of the RP they'd be up too. 1st place gets 50 USD, 2nd place gets 35 USD, 3rd place gets 15 USD and it can be for any game, setting, whatever.
EDIT - Specific rules and details to be announced July 1st.
Thanks this was helpful.
Didn't want to create a whole new thread for this:
Question - In the MUSH community what is the standard policy on meta-posting, intuitive posting, 6th sense posting, extra-sensory posting, the posting of information which may not or cannot be readily perceived by players?
Example: Jeshin walks down the road after a long night out drinking. He has a faint sheen of sweat on his face and cannot walk straight as evident by his slow weaving route.
I'll acknowledge that having players be STs is difficult if I understand the concept of ST accurately. On The Sea of Storms which had a much more group write culture than most MUDs we tried to encourage players to enhance scenes and create roleplay amongst themselves by giving them a guide about "player events". You can see it here if you care too.
It had pretty mixed results. We did see a slight uptick though because players were less concerned about overstepping themselves and getting in trouble with staff. The primary issue that seemed to hold it back besides people not wanting to be "that guy" was they didn't want other players to accuse them of manipulating things to their advantage. The fear of opening ones self up to criticism could be a factor too and it's a hard one to address.
Specifically on getting players to engage as a staffer...
Consider having an NPC provide them with a reason or the knowledge to become involved. Do they not know that a heist is going down and they're the best lockpicker in the city? Give them some kind of tie-in.
Consider a rumor system (automated or freeform) that allows for general information to be distributed that has varying degrees of accuracy thus encouraging players to dig into them if their interest is piqued or use that information to find their own tie-in with the plot that is going on.
Have the illusion of fortune or misfortune bring a player into a plot that is relevant to their personal story for the enrichment of themselves and the story you wanted them to be involved in.
Some of these have varying levels of babysitting going on, but if you're having issues on a playerbase wide scale then a little tender love and care from staff can go a long way to making them feel confident enough to begin finding their own stories.
Question
If you start up a scene in a book store and someone goes crazy torture madness on the book seller. Would you escalate that to cops showing up? Would you like inform your staff? Would you just have the book seller pass out from stress/fear? That seems like a pretty over the top reaction but I believe it could and has happened.
I'd have to agree with the concept that all players are STs. No one if going to cry foul if you have a fly land in your soup and you make a scene about it with a vnpc waiter as a way to liven up a boring bar scene. Just like people probably won't cry foul if you have an NPC bump into you on the street and get into a shoving fight.
When in doubt and you want to spice up a dull scene. Just have bad things happen to your own character to be the catalyst for interaction.

Some games I picked up on the Summer steam sale that I'd heartily suggest you look at if you like good music, good voice acting, and good story. Gameplay is moderate. Sale still appears to be going too.
Then I concede. I am guilty of self nepotism.
I am neither my own relative or my own close friend.

I own Project Redshift and founded Optional Realities. So you could say I'm biased. You could say I'm arbitrary. You could say a lot of things but nepotism would be incorrect. Also the assumption that we do not list games that are in-development and about to release would be incorrect. LabMUD was listed because it was scheduled for release 8 days after our launch and it meets all the criteria on the list. If any game was getting ready to release and wanted the exposure and was going to qualify they'd be just as welcome to contact us.
PS - If the website had no game list and no game sub-forums and was purely for RP and development discussions. Would you still have issues? If so what would they be? Have you taken the time to check out the community at all?

EDIT - Project Redshift is the game I'm developing so I'm fairly confident there. I've spoken with Japheth from LabMUD numerous times and the FutureMUD engine appears to qualify. If it didn't I'd probably remove it. As to why they are listed. Project Redshift is my game in development so I get to list it with a release date. LabMUD was supposed to be released May 9th (we opened May 1st) but there was a delay. I'd prefer not to kick someone while they're down by de-listing them.
