@moonman I think mileage varies. We get new players - like new to the MU hobby entirely - on a fairly regular basis. Not sure what our retention rate is, but there is interest.

RE: Celebrities that are Dead To Us
@arkandel It would be a decent apology/taking ownership statement IF.
IF he hadn't been denying it for years.
IF He hadn't pretended the women accusing him of this shit were lying. FOR YEARS. I'm sorry, but I can't, and it breaks my heart because he is legit my favorite comedian of all time. But fuck you, Louis. It doesn't take any bravery at all to 'admit' something when you finally have no choice, because for the first time in our lousy, miserable history, people are starting to actually maybe sort of believe women.

RE: Make it fun for Me!
I also used that phrase a lot in talking about interplayer conflict, and I'll never change my mind about it. If you think another player wants to meet you on your timetable so you can chastise them or mock them or berate them or give them grief over something they did IC, you damn well need to make it fun for them. Be mindful of what they might enjoy. Be cognizant of cues. And if you have to do things that aren't fun for them, do them and get them over with and then move on, ffs.

RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.
Pedants. People who are so overwhelmingly desperate to prove that they Know Something that they will run over jokes, vague generalities, and people just to WELL ACTUALLY.

RE: MUSH Marriages (IC)
I have only ever been MUSH married on Firan, because it was such a big thing there. I had two, they were both with people I loved rp with and enjoyed chatting with ooc, so, score. I guess the first one lasted longer, as the second was ended by the game ending. It was horrible, IC. My husband was a not super functional sociopath. Good times.

I have good health insurance. I use the Duke medical network, which is supposedly one of the best.
AND YET I still have what feels like a lot of runaround, disbelief, and bad experiences. Like, what the fuck are we even up in arms about preserving, here? Even with money and good insurance in this country, your healthcare is a total crapshoot.

RE: Favorite Minigames
fun minigames: actual minigames. Games of chance that people can play IC/gambling, that has a slight chance of reward. Gambling games, darts/knife throwing/games that can record a list of "high scores".
Outfit code, so you can build up pretty outfits and switch between them without having to group them all into different bags and wear them.
fortune telling/tarot style code.
Anything random that generates rp, like the @randomscene code. I think @randomseethe would be cool, too, could let people roll dice to pick who to snark on in journals. I don't know if this would be better or worse than everyone ganging up on the FOM. Would be fun in the right hands, though.
Anything that produces something, like gardening or animal breeding

RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.
@aerianyx Not being able to sleep is more serious than you think. If something is preventing you from it and you are struggling, there is no shame at all in looking for help. It's not a contest. I know how hard that is to accept, believe me, but it isn't. What you are going through is real, and you deserve to have better health.

RE: Roleplayer's shower thoughts
@arkandel said in Roleplayer's shower thoughts:
@goldfish I think it was an interview on Wizard magazine (yes, that long ago) by Ed Brubaker for a then upcoming Batman run that's stayed with me for a long time. He said that one of the writing tricks he uses for characters is to know a menial couple of things about them no one else does, and which don't need to be ever brought up. It's just a way to get into their head.
This is an acting trick as well, and it DOES work. Once when I was trying to integrate into a rp community where I knew literally no one, I made my character be writing a travel guide and do interviews with people she met. I would help them flesh out those little things about their characters that don't always occur, like favorite colors, comfort food, habits, stuff just like that.

RE: Accounting for gender imbalances
@Caryatid this is all good too. Don't make your first woman hire all about how she's your first woman hired. Examine the culture and what needs to be changed or reinforced to make it appropriate for ANY worker who might come in, and don't put the onus on the 'diversity hire' to point those things out, or sign off on things.
Honestly, I do not think there are different standards for what is work appropriate for men, women, or other. Keep it professional and let all your employees do their jobs.

RE: Character 'types'
I guess I am drawn towards characters that have a very bubbly, friendly, upbeat personality which hides varying degrees of pragmatism. Or ruthlessness.
And yes, I judge people for everything, though I try not to let it spill out into my outside voice, so much. I think anyone can play a slaver, or a racist. But if that's like...your type? Yeah I might start to assume you have some ooc leanings that way. Possibly this would be a bad assumption, but I still make it.

RE: A Lack of Imagination
Aphantasia blows my mind, and I try not to make the person I know who has it feel like I pity them but omg I pity them and if it was me I would be SO SAD (except probably not as I wouldn't know any different).

RE: MSB, SJW, and other acronyms
@friendlybee i don't think it has anything at all to do with being 'conservative'. Most conservatives I know don't resort to namecalling for the sake of being edgy. Calling someone a cunt is just someone being an asshole. It's not a political thing at all until people start dropping "SJW" to dismiss those who object.

RE: The ADD/ADHD Thread (cont'd from Peeves)
@Gingerlily Seconded. The neurologist diagnosis makes it much easier get the medications you probably need, as they are largely schedule I.
And beyond that, having it helped me with a lot of things I internalized. When I was a kid, most people thought ADHD was something only boys had - if they didn't think it was outright fake, or had even heard of it. So I always heard I was lazy, or unmotivated, or just bad because I wouldn't do the simple things I knew I was supposed to do. It has been very eye opening to look at my life and behavior against the data on this disorder. Lots of "oh so THAT explains a lot" moments.

(still over here thinking 'yeah that feels like me but it can't be me because of all the people who have told me I'm just whining for attention when I don't take a compliment well')
or you don't want to mention it and provoke your friends to give you MORE compliments and assurances (that will cause you to feel even more like you are fooling them, and should be ashamed)

RE: Spirit Lake - Discussion
@meg There usually isn't one. Someone will end up feeling slighted one way or the other, just gotta do the best you can.

RE: RL Anger
@Auspice Why would you lie to her like that? Most vile assholes never become real people.

RE: criticism not allowed in ad threads is only enforcing a false positive, prove me wrong
you suck
wait, this is mildly constructive
you don't /rock/
I mean I agree that having different 'reviews' in the ad threads is helpful, but people are not great at not devolving into personal criticisms? HABITUAL LINE STEPPERS ON THIS BOARD

RE: Tulpas or Roleplaying?
This blog is horrifying me. Imagine this is your child, or brother, and one day out of the blue he's like NO I AM NOW A PONY WIFE NAMED OGUIGI.
