Surely a pattern would surface, yes?

If you think so, I salute you. Having tried to untangle those types of conflicts several times, I can say from my experience it is not easy. It's not even doable, sometimes.

Or my favorite, someone is upset they can't get included in something, and you find out the people who could include them just don't really want to play with them. Do you think you can/should force people to interact with other people? If so, how do you think you can accomplish that in a way that doesn't cause a lot of resentment?

    • RE: MUs That We Would Love To Make (But Won't)

@de-villefort said in MUs That We Would Love To Make (But Won't):

You can murder 20 people a day on the battlefield and no one cares. Murder 1 person in a game set in modern times and you'll be hunted for life.

This has nothing to do with modern morals. In fact, I'd say human life is at a very low value in these modern times, and most crimes are not investigated much, if at all. There are absolutely hundreds of murders on the daily that no one is hunted for LIFE over.

But more relevant, you are also representing MU players wrong. Players in a battletech mu would not disregard the death of a PC, no matter what the setting is. They'd disregard the death of an NPC, sure, but they do that in games with 'modern' morals, too. The setting doesn't dictate nearly as much of player behavior as you suggest.

I know that we're in Mildly Constructive or whatever, but it was pretty plainly a passive-aggresive move to try and undermine the original point, and I'm definitely not alone in that reading.

You weren't used. You did a thing and got called out. Deal.

I don't think you've been constructive a day in your life, but this really isn't the place for your condescension.

    • RE: Tips on Güd TS

      @mietze
And sometimes, that person might be all about TS with some people, but about more interesting RP elsewhere, if it's available. Honestly, when someone tells me "X is just here for TS" I think there's three possible things going on.

      1. X is just all about TS, which would quickly become apparent upon interacting with them.
      2. The person claiming X is all about TS is in some sort of competition with X and using it to put them down.
      3. The person claiming X is all about TS wanted X to spend time roleplaying things X did not find interesting. I mean, I have heard this before from people who I knew were all about sitting around in their houses roleplaying their child objects and making pies. Not everyone is into that, and I can't even cast aspersions because I am also not into that.

      Thank you, everyone. Really!

I made it in Photoshop CS3, using a random free 'old parchment' texture as the background and painting on top of it.

Striving to think rationally is admirable for all the reasons discussed above. And it is, on the whole, better than thinking emotionally

      lol what
People who aren't caught up in bullshit are aware that both logic and emotion are pretty important in dealing with life. One without the other is bad, no matter which way you skew.

LOL "too interesting". The main thing people forget in their entitlement is that any game is not just about their fun, and what interests them. Participating means you should have an eye towards what is fun and interesting for other people to play with, too.

    • RE: Policies

@Bobotron Agree..to an extent! I do think certain subjects tend to be uh, hotbeds (I am so sorry) of unwanted drama. Underage things, but even above that, rape stories. I have never in roleplay seen a rape story that didn't spiral out of the bounds of the two people who agreed to do it, because that's part of the fantasy story. There's the terrible thing that happens, and then there's the revenge/justice plot as you bring people in to bring the dirty deeder to the light! *

*note that rape done as part of a sexual scene that is 2 peoples' fantasy that no one ever realizes happened? Go and do.

    • RE: Sensitive cultural/political/religious aspects of game themes.

@roz Honestly I'm happy to say that pretty early in the discussion, if the topic is one I know we aren't going to budge on. Like hey, your opinion is noted, but this is just not going to change. So you can either disapprove of it quietly and keep playing, or you can elect not to play, but I don't have time to rehash arguments on a daily (or even weekly) basis.

Kind of too busy making RP and story for people who are enjoying themselves.

I don't actually care what any of you think I should be doing, or should not be doing. Arx is not my job, it's my hobby. If you want to play because we are trying to facilitate fun and story, great! If you don't want to play there for any reason up to and including me, also great!

@icanbeyourmuse That's unfortunately probably a terrible way to get engaged, as it can be seen as kind of passive aggressive.

Find a conversation you want in on, and pose your way in! Use names, be polite (or at least be ENGAGING). If they miss it the first time, don't take it personally if it's a big scene. Try again. Or send a message later, like 'hey I couldn't help but overhear you at X, you seem interesting/I would like to subscribe to your newsletter check yes or no".

    • RE: How Do I Headwiz?

Know what keeps the most (positive) people engaged in a rp game? It's not time-to-resolution on jobs (though apps and stuff should clearly be pretty speedy). It's not a well polished set of helpfiles, though that certainly is nice to have.

It's story. It's roleplay. Let's be brutally honest: whatever mechanics and systems you have are most likely not going to compete with even the simplest of actual video games. People play rp games to rp.

So here, I will say the thing I always stop myself from saying to players who are complaining they can't get involved, or they can't really get motivated, or that no one wants to rp with them or come to their events.

      Be more interesting.

Every decision you make should be with the goal of enabling interesting story for people to rp about/within.

    • RE: Which canon property/setting would be good for a MU* ?

@Tempest said in Which canon property/setting would be good for a MU* ?:

It's very rare these days for staff to want to put in the effort (or understand how) to build a world/setting that players can actually impact or has anything going on.

There's a reason for this. Well, there are probably a thousand reasons for this, but there's one specific one I'm thinking of, and it's "my god are people entitled dicks (sometimes) about the effort you put into making story for them".

Not everyone, not even most people, but when you get loud complainers it can really sour you on the idea. Why take a chance writing a badass plot thing for someone when they might:

      A. take it, act on it, make you write a billion cool clues/scenes, and then BITCH ON PUBLIC CHANNELS THEY GET NO GAME INVOLVEMENT, or to their friends in discord who think it's cool to bring it to you as a 'complaint with merit' they are concerned about.

B: take it, get super involved, get you super involved, and then flake the fuck out as soon as something doesn't go the way they want in a conflict

😄 ignore it/not get enthused at all

Also someone should make a FMA:B game. I would play that. I want to be Izumi Curtis ok thank you

    • RE: Does size matter? What about duration?

I want the appropriate pose. Depending on the scene, that could be a one line pose with a two word sentence. It can also be a multi-paragraph monster.

As long as the person (people) I am roleplaying with are actually putting in effort and not making me bear the entire burden of moving the conversation**, I don't care how long or short their poses are.

**I hate being in a scene with someone where they answer your questions/statements and give you nothing to build off of going forward. It puts the pressure on me to come up with a 'new' conversational or physical angle in every pose, and it's exhausting.

One time someone posted something shitty, and when I called them out on it they double (triple?) edited their original post until it contained no trace of the shittiness I referred to. They then got all hysterical about me attacking them for no reason. That kind of pissed me off, but meh. I still think people should be able to edit. You don't punish an entire class for the one idjit that burned the microwave popcorn and made the whole room smell like failure.

    • RE: Questionably viable character types and tropes (tangent from staff ethics convo)

I think it really really really depends on the game. If your game is mostly going to run on player plots and player driven conflict, sure. You can approve some assholes, some tough guys (and dolls) who don't afraid of no authority, etc. If you want your players to mostly work with each other, no. Noooooooooooooooo.
