      They have an easy application

They want an email for application. That's an instant "nope!" here. On two grounds:

      1. I don't know them from a hole in the ground. I'm not going to hand them my email.
      2. If(f) they think this somehow "secures" things they're too stupid to staff.

I don't know (or care) if #2 is true or not. #1 is sufficient grounds for turning and walking away.

Please feel free to keep not applying, if this is your sentiment.

As for Custodius, if he tries to ooc bully another player or pulls any sort of rule-bending, cheating bs, he'll be gone. If he doesn't, great!

    • RE: Sensitive cultural/political/religious aspects of game themes.

All I'll say is that 100% of these games are fantasy, and anyone who tells you they can't get immersed if the historical setting doesn't conform entirely to historical standards is someone I give a lot of side eye. Tweak your theme to support what you want to run stories in, because the most important thing is keeping yourself invested and having fun. Otherwise, just set up a sandbox and let people do what they want.

@tinuviel said in Season of Endings:

Apparently, tis the season for endings, and mine is drawing near. I feel much like Cicero did when Augustus came to power, watching the names of friends and colleagues be posted to the forum door in the latest round of proscriptions. Bearing witness to a once-great thing becoming torrid and abused.

So, I feel it only sensible to leave before I'm sent naked to join my colleagues in exile. Lord knows that my mouth will get me into trouble one of these days, and I'd like to retain a little dignity as I vacate this once great home of free thought and expression. I find I barely recognise it now. It may simply be that I am old and tired, and what I thought this place should be is something best left to the ashcan of history. Or perhaps it never actually existed as I imagine, and my mind is tainted with the rose-coloured glass of reminiscing and mourning the past.

I have been a member of this and related communities for many years. We've laughed, cried, mourned, and celebrated together. From whence we started many of us have started families, gained academic or professional acclaim, or simply just gotten older. Though I pride myself on my ability to emotionally distance myself and to regard this place as simply A Thing and not anything important, I find myself sad at the state of affairs with which we have been presented.

I could articulate why I feel as I do, and indeed so many of us do, but that has been done dozens of times by those now gone and my analysis would not add anything of merit; I shall simply say that I disagree with many policies, some new and some old, and that disagreement has reached a point making my remaining here untenable.

I have found friends here, for which I thank you. I have found foes, for which I curse you. And I have found myself, for which you all owe me an apology and a refund.

Much love and respect, to those that deserve it,
      Tinuviel

Not directed at anyone in particular...
I really wish folks would chill with the "remember it's just a game, let everyone have fun"

not to mention you can't let EVERYONE have fun, because the fun of one person is almost guaranteed to impact the fun of another person, likely negatively. For every freewheeling "FUCK THE RULES" char you approve, there's somewhere a player playing that char's authority figure in something that has to shoulder a lot of nonsense for that fun - to use an unrelated example.

To be bluntly frank, since I just woke up:
I almost added to that post <not mod voice>, but I thought: 'These are adults. We've flagged our posts to explicitly say mod voice. They're smart enough to know that it's not mod voice.'

      Apparently not.

Wait, so since you weren't clear, we are stupid non adults for not realizing your unhelpful advice on what belongs in which thread wasn't mod voice?

Are people really so obtuse they cannot tell the difference?

Yikes. Weren't you the one saying personal insults outside the hog pit should not be allowed, at all?

    • RE: Book Recommendations

There is no debating it, Kvothe is the mary-est mary sue in all the land. I enjoyed those two books, but just...barely. Rothfuss' prose is great. It's really, really good, and he introduced a couple of other characters that I liked a lot, but UGH. Fuck off Kvothe with being the best and the cleverest and the danny rand and the most irresistible and the smartest. That character is straight out of fan fiction.

I think it speaks to just how good the prose is that it kept me engaged despite the horrible train wreck of a protagonist. I wish he'd just write seven books about Elodin.

First Law is great. Stormlight Archives are far and away the best stuff Sanderson has written. They are good.

    • RE: The limits of IC/OOC responsibility

@darinelle There's the mitigating factor of : players who take risks are usually punished ruthlessly by the playerbase if the outcome of those risks is not 100% positive...even though 100% positive outcomes don't offer nearly as much RP opportunity.

Like, take player A. They did something really (ok stupidly) recklessly, but it was BIG, and more it was something the entire setting was pressuring that faction to do, forever...and the rest of the players want to oust them from everything for doing it in the wrong way.

Staff isn't to blame for this, it's a lack of consideration for people outside our groups of friends and friendly acquaintances.

Yeah it's weird how RP seems like a lot of..work, right now? Almost anything I have to focus on mentally does. I haven't really been watching new shows or movies, even, because the idea of sitting still and actually paying attention to something for an hour feels exhausting.

    • RE: nWorld of Darkness 1E v 2E

multi sphere games seem dumb because of DARLINGS. I tried to play hunter and my background got denied because it involved killing a vampire in another town. I was told we weren't allowed to hunt ANY of the monster types the game supported, because otherwise that group of monsters would have reason to get TEH REVENGE.

I asked if the vampires in game were likewise not allowed to hunt/kill humans and my logic was not appreciated.

    • RE: RL Anger

They look like everyone else. They sound like everyone else.

There's no way to give you a type of person to look out for. I assure you, you know some. But here is one big red flag:

If someone justifies shitty comments or their behavior with "Learn to take a joke" or "I was just joking, don't be so sensitive"? That's the guy.

I'm not surprised that guys object "But I don't see it in MY social group", but it is disappointing. Are you looking for it? Really? Are you paying attention to the offhanded comments your peers make to/about females? Be honest with yourself. I know when I'm playing a game or engaging in a hobby, I'm usually pretty focused on what I'm doing (or about to do, you best believe Armageddon is coming out because screw your board state).

I'm reminded of a conversation I had not long ago with some VERY ethical, wonderful men. Men who would never condone this kind of behavior, and would absolutely speak out if they saw it. They were boggled. "Do men really randomly tell you to smile?" One asked.

They had no idea it was a real thing, when it is absolutely a real thing that I'd say close to 100% of women experience. Is it harassment? Not always, it's a mild example. But it goes to show how things you don't think about/experience can fly completely under your radar.

      @Arkandel
...huh. I don't think anyone is asking you to personally intervene to rescue women from gropers and harassers.

It's not about you seeing it in action and preventing it, at ALL, but I find it interesting that your mind goes that way. It's indicative of something important, and that thing is : loss of agency.

You want to be told where and when this type of thing happens, because you want to prevent it. That's noble, but misguided. We don't need white knights. We don't need protectors and heroes. To want to be that person is not helping women - it's trying to help yourself regain your lost agency.

What we ACTUALLY need is a deeper understanding of the pervasive social issues that make this shit commonplace. We need the people in power, the members of the group of people perpetrating this shit - in this case, men, specifically (because they have a much harder time accepting that struggles are real) white men - to accept that their permissiveness of this privilege is absolutely contributing to the problem.

I'm sorry if that's uncomfortable for you. It's understandable, but it sucks, because I think your (specifically you) heart is in the right place. You don't need to be told what to look for, you need to be told that your idea of helping is not actually the help we need.
