    • RE: Book Recommendations

I agree with what seem to be your thoughts on Sanderson, though I think the progression is backwards. if you read his earlier stuff, it is WAY more uh...juvenile and optimistic than, say, Way of Kings. Way more. I think he's making strides, even if I don't ever think he'll write anything you could call "gritty".

But Way of Kings is coming along nicely, and I really liked Mistborn. Mostly. Ignoring the teenage romance. Mostly I read his stuff and marvel that his outlook on life is clearly much more positive than my own. I'll just be over here in the Joe Abercrombie corner of cynicism.

@kanye-qwest Is that the crazy magician professor?

Yes. He and the uh, girl loan shark were the only characters I really liked.

@arkandel Probably a book will be released as the last star fades out.

As for GRR dying, I wouldn't personally care at all if ASOIAF never got finished, but this made me think 'what if they got Brandon Sanderson to finish this, too?" and then I laughed. What a tonal shift that would be.

I want Rothfuss to write more, though. I do like his prose. But yeah, wise man's fear was...wow. He has 2.75 characters in either book that I actually give half a shit about. I wish he'd just write the adventures of Elodin. That, I would read.

Patrick Rothfuss' prose and world building are 10/10. His characters range from about a 5/10 to a -15/10, with Kvothe being a nice even 0.

    • RE: Interest Check: Ancient Greek RP

@zombiegenesis wait, you want what, then? Camp is sort of part and parcel to most peoples' familiarity with Fantastical Ancient Greece. It's not just Xena/ Hercules. It's Clash of the Titans. It's even that newer movie with the really zany hats and Henry Cavill.

I'm just not a fan of limiting special playable concepts. I'd rather not have them at all than restrict them - because who ends up with them? It creates a big ugly divide, generates drama and appearance of favoritism that I've never seen work out for MU*, you know?.

I have 0 familiarity with this setting but so much of this. If you are only going to let 'certain small amounts' of people play something, it doesn't matter the metric by which you decide who can do it - it's going to create bad feelings. If it needs to be limited, make them off limits for players and just use them as antagonists or something.

@arkandel said in Roleplayer's shower thoughts:

@goldfish I think it was an interview on Wizard magazine (yes, that long ago) by Ed Brubaker for a then upcoming Batman run that's stayed with me for a long time. He said that one of the writing tricks he uses for characters is to know a menial couple of things about them no one else does, and which don't need to be ever brought up. It's just a way to get into their head.

This is an acting trick as well, and it DOES work. Once when I was trying to integrate into a rp community where I knew literally no one, I made my character be writing a travel guide and do interviews with people she met. I would help them flesh out those little things about their characters that don't always occur, like favorite colors, comfort food, habits, stuff just like that.

    • RE: Good TV

So Reddit decided that the creators of Westworld should release all the plot points of season 2 so that there'd be no point in spoiling people week to week. It worked for GOT right? Considering so many people read the books for seasons 1-5?

      Westworld's team delivered:

Honestly i don't give a fuck if someone's online behavior matches their RL. If I'm only ever going to deal with them online, and they are gross or annoying, then they are gross or annoying.

      Looking at you, Vaapad.

I wouldn't worry about Vaapad, he's pretty busy with his Lords & Ladies FiranMUX clone these days.

      what game is this?

@roz because i'm honestly curious if this "i don't code but i'm gonna start up this game with this super intense and crunchy system" is gonna happen. Just cause I don't star wards doesn't mean I don't want people who do ward stars to have a playground.

A lot of people ignorantly think that you have to defend copyright or you lose it. I don't actually believe any real lawyers are telling any authors that they must say no, though. Its just a sort of urban legend that floats around and people claim to be true.

I mean, I said that because I read an author blog about it, but I'm sure they were lying or ignorant and you are definitely in the know.

Then they have a really, really, really bad lawyer.

But yes, I'm about as well-versed in copyright law as one can be while not being a lawyer. Mostly because my day job has intellectual property lawyers who lecture us about it 😛

So if an author said "sure, I don't care, make whatever you want" and then happened to write something that was very similar to a fan work, that fan could not then turn around and sue the author for copyright infringement, right?
