Darn. Well, sort of darn. I can't re-use the character template I made the last time I struggled my simple ass through WoD cg.

This is one of the occasions where, if you ask nicely, other people might be willing to give you what you need, but if you don't ask and just complain about not being given everything, they'll probably help you out anyway while resenting you, because people are just bitches like that.

      LOL you mad, though?

Shout out to Darwin at Fallcoast who was very, VERY patient and helpful in explaining things to me when it came to the CG process, and to @surreality and @tragedyjones (and others in this thread!) for answers and offers of help here.

@Misadventure Aww, what if the monster just wanted a better life for its kids and was trying to breed in some nice, normal human? Tragic.

So it sounds like BITN kind of IS going for the horror element, in that people aren't playing the monsters so there's no urge to befriend/have sex with/become them. That seems like a fresh take, I hope it flourishes.

Here's an experiment: try asking first. I think you'll find more people willing to accommodate you if you give them some warning. Say, "Hey, I'd like to join your scene, but I'm really bad at giving reasons for people to include me, so would you mind making an excuse to allow me to RP with you?"

Now you're just being a bitch.

      Anyway!

I like that BITN gives such freedom to PRPers, hopefully that will mitigate some sandbox malaise. I see that the FAQ says no minor templates - so I assume the game is for mortal and select mortal+, not hunter conspiracies? Forgive the dumb question if it seems dumb.

Yes, I am entitled and insensitive for stating my public RP preferences.

This proves my point, though. I have two people criticizing me for tonal complaints because we are discussing RP OOC.

Here is how it actually goes when I am being an insufferably entitled boor:

Go to public RP spot. See people there. Pose my entrance and whatever, probably with a nod or a hello their way if I want to approach them for rp.

Said people can ignore my pose, nod back and continue their conversation, say hi and nonspecifically give the OK to join them by doing so, etc.

All done with no OOC communication, so there's nothing to take personally.

If you honestly object to that in a public place, I don't get it.

You think it is necessary for people to ask your permission to rp around/at you in public, and I'm uncompromising?

      @Coin

I am all for people getting up and leaving a public place if they want to go have a private scene, I just don't see why it can't be handled IC.

And you're right, it can definitely interrupt the vibe of a conversation to include the jackass who just walked in and started eating off the floor. In which case, cast the jackass a disdaining glance and ignore them like the nuisance they are. Just again, do it IC.

All manner of silly arguments about intentions and ooc tone and on and on and on are avoided if you don't get into OOC discussions when it isn't necessary.

This is what I mean by organic. If two characters are in a public place, having a public scene, anyone there can join, or comment on what's going on, whatever. Just like in real life, there are rude and polite ways to insert yourself in a conversation/situation.

Also just like in life (I prefer RP that strives for some level of realism in interpersonal interaction) if you are in a public place and a discussion suddenly turns private, you don't teleport to a broom closet or carry on like you're IN a broom closet, getting angry at those who intrude. You get up, make an excuse, and leave. Or delay the Omg Private moment until later.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I don't like paging people to ask if it's ok to join them, and I don't like the ooc room discussion that devolves into "oh so sorry! Smileyface smileyface smileyface." and "I'll just ignore this and we'll time stop and pretend we never came in here and you didn't see us ok?" I don't mind a quick ooc 'cool to join in?' just for the sake of being polite, but I think if you are in an IC hangout and you are roleplaying, that's a public scene and anyone can participate.

Tehom has fixed it! He found an issue with syntax in the telnet control strings being sent. And a bunch of other stuff, I feel like maybe he broke three things to fix this one, but I have pretty colors! Thanks for suggestions!

Well, I can certainly see why you'd be frustrated by having to create characters using a system you're unfamiliar with, but there's no way around it. I've had the same experience say, rolling a character on a comic book MUSH a while ago... but I can't blame the game for it unless they make it unnecessarily complex or they don't give a hand with it etc.

I'm not trying to place blame on any game, not at all! I am just kvetching, fully aware that what is keeping me out of the WoD setting/games is all on me. I'm lazy, and I've never been a min/maxer, especially in RP. I care about stats/skills/perks insofar as A. they back up my character concept or B. they give me ideas for fun things to do IC. So now I feel bad because you guys are being helpful and I'm just bitching.

I am not holding any games or staffers/designers responsible for the way I feel when I'm contemplating the 3 core book PDFs I have to consult to spend my dots. I do like the use of that word, so 10 points for WoD. DOTS.

In other words, if you can go to a room and have the game code advertise the fact you're available and looking for scenes, does that help? Because if you do it enough maybe other people will do the same... and it might not be completely organic, but it seems close enough to me.

I admit that I haven't given this a fair try, and I'm sure it would work to a degree. It usually does. It's just, in my limited experience, there doesn't seem (from the outside) to be a lot going on in these games, so it sort of..fails to dig its hooks in?

It's really turned me off to most sandbox games, and even though I got all excited about BITN's concept I have to remind myself that 100% of my experience with WoD games so far has been a simple flowchart.

      Let's take a look at it. 🙂

      deal with obnoxious charcreation/app process

What do you find particularly obnoxious about it? Like, what's the worst part about WoD CGen as opposed to other systems' (assuming there is an approval process of course for them, CGen-less MU* don't count).

But why not be the change you want in the world? Make something happen, get a story going. Run a PrP if need be, get your character in some trouble then ask your friends (or find some) for help, get in a faction and do something unexpected, start a group (coterie/cabal/pack/etc) if you can't find one. You know? Be proactive, make some ripples and pull others into that madness.

These things are tied together. The character creation for me is obnoxious because not only have I never played WoD tabletop, I've never really played ANY tabletop outside a couple cool one-offs my friends have done on game nights. I don't have a good knowledge of the mechanics (ok I have NO knowledge of the mechanics)

Which might make you ask why I'd want to play these games, and the answer is I love modern supernatural/horror settings.

      @Derp said:

So, this might be a dumb question, but have you considered, you know... asking people if they want to play? Because from your flowchart it sounds like a whole lot of passive, and not a lot of active. And active is really the key to finding stuff.

Again, the real issue here is my lack of familiarity with the setting. I have no trouble being active to find RP (or, have never had an issue with this before) but my preferred style is the kind that happens organically - that just never seems to happen without an IC grid people want to hang out on more than the OOC rooms. Then, when I have a good feel for characters in my newly-known group, I can come up with a plot that helps advance them/appeals to their chars or personalities. That's the storytelling I like.

I hated, on the last game I staffed for, that we were expected to run bullshit scenes anyone and everyone could participate in. Generic fires. Rat swarms. Whatever. HATE.

I feel you on this. Or I get busy with RL/Work and then look back and missed that chance to jump into a plot or whatever thing is getting going on the fly. Hit me up in the OOC and we'll do this thing! Just don't be like @Derp and try to hit on my PC right out the gate... Creeeeepy.

I only participate in sexytime rp or rp deep interpersonal relationships. I have striking looks 2 and you are obviously already in love with my PC.

I am transparently downvoting you because obviously that was a feature, not a bug.

In more general news, I successfully made it through my first WoD chargen here and everyone is very nice.

WoD chargen is the worst. I just went through it awhile ago, got all excited about my character (BLATANTLY STOLEN) concept, and then I get in game and no one roleplays.

It's really turned me off to most sandbox games, and even though I got all excited about BITN's concept I have to remind myself that 100% of my experience with WoD games so far has been a simple flowchart.

      2.
Wait for char to be approved. Hang out in the OOC room with the intention of making friends to play with despite not really being much for OOC chatting with strangers.
      3.
Begin to hate the OOC room, myself, and everyone else in it.
      4.
Get approved! Get 1 scene with whoever talked me into trying game.
      5.
Realize the bulk of the game just hangs out in that OOC room waiting for something to happen to go IC for. Despair of ever running into cool random RP (which is the only way I make friends in RP communities - still not much for ooc chatting)
      6.
Stop logging in. REPEAT WITH NEW GAME.

You killed MY character. Except it was IC and it wasn't you, it was a fall from an exploding bridge. Also, I didn't die, because dice. BUT it was good times, and we got to make Bjoern say "please don't do this" five times before the mission.

    • Windows 10/Color 256 woes?

Has anyone found a client/settings combo that will let you use color 256 with Windows 10? I use potato, newest version, and my roommates can see color in Arx fine on Windows 8, but I only get 16 colors on Windows 10.

My initial googling has found a few instances of other people complaining about it but no real leads, yet. edit: I have run the compatibility troubleshooter and attempted to make it work in both windows 7 and 8 mode. Bleh.

      • Make the game an actual sandbox, that does not mean staff should not introduce plot elements and run NPCs with agendas but they should be deciding 'Where do we want the story to go?' then railroading things. The meat of the game should be competition between player characters and the environment they find themselves in.

It sounds fun, but how do you go about this? I expect when you open a game you need to have plot ready to go for people to sink their teeth into. Like that ambiguous 'strong opening paragraph' they tell you about in creative writing.

I had no concept of text based RP games until 2010 or something. I had a friend who was playing one and he was like "you are up all night bored at work, anyway. Try this thing." (I was.) I did. It was really fun for something I could do at work.

I love rping bad relationships. That's way more fun that super-happy ones - but you're totally right. You don't necessarily have to say explicitly that's what is going to happen, but you have to have a pretty good idea you're in the IC relationship with a like minded individual, or at least someone who is cool with going with the flow.

I tend to avoid people who have strict IC expectations for how interactions will go, in general.
