      There you go. That's why you got a mention in that regard.

      Pointing out that your poor manner may be why people don't give you the amount of sympathy you were actively complaining about not getting at all times does not actually translate to '@kitteh only cares about her personal tribe (whoever the fuck that is) and is a callous bitch toward all strangers.' You're really one to talk about reading comprehension, words in people's mouths, and personal attacks.

      If you want it dropped, like all the others who keep coming in here and slinging shit around the moment the dust starts to settle, then fucking drop it.

      That quiets down with mutual apologies, Kanye Quest characterizes it as me continuing to be a dick to kk.

      Now we have the kitteh round as shit starts to settle again.

      Dust starts to settle? This is some balls of steel level historical revisionism that you're doing in a place where people can effortlessly go and check who posted what when.

      You @'ed me to bring up my, and I will quote you, 'ugly mentality', 5 days after the prior conversation had ended and in the middle of what was otherwise apparently a peaceful rhyming gif meme-off. I don't know what bizarre fantasy world you live in, but just like @kk wasn't attacking you, I am not 'starting shit' when I defend myself from your mudslinging that happens nearly a week after the prior issue had dropped.

      Like seriously, in this thread, the #1 harasser? Is you.

      WTF is even happening here.

      After dropping the discussion in the previous thread, @surreality keeps namedropping me on this one, as if I'm the fucking patron saint of whatever bizarre issue she has an axe to grind with. I didn't even comment the first time, I guess because it still seemed vaguely constructive, though I guess she decided it was more fun to bitch out @kk. But seriously now:

      @surreality said in RL Anger:

      By that logic, and logic slung around by @kitteh in the previous thread, if I see 'one of them' being harassed or forum stalked, I shouldn't be expected to give half a shit about abuse being done to them or call it out, but I really just don't roll that way -- there's no 'I don't like something you said to me, so I don't give a shit if people sling abuse at you, and I'll cheer them on as they do'. You wanna talk about an ugly mentality? Yeah. Because, wow. And awesome points to @saosmash for not being like that. It is noticed, it is appreciated, and it is hugely respected.

      ????? What on earth do you think you're saying, you egocentric living drama pile?

      How do you take my numerous offers that you could count on my support in those kind of situations (aka, legit harassment) because I think it's such a colossally shitty thing as the drivel you posted above? You basically ignored all of that and swore at me. So, in a language you understand: fuck you, fuck you a hundred times over you miserable turdwaffle (But: in-game harassment against you is still wrong and I still condemn it!)

      People upvoting posts pointing out your nonsense are not part of a conspiracy with your harassers. They are people who think you are full of shit. They are people who've noticed that you are obviously psychologically and perhaps physically incapable of dropping an issue, bringing it up over and over again days after others have dropped it, while simultaneously accusing the rest of the world at 'grudgewanking.' You're always talking about your knitting, so maybe stop posting and go fucking knit or something? Or whatever will help. Because you need serious help stepping away.

      Also: Is there a way I can turn off her notifications so it will stop pinging me every time she decides to burn me in effigy in a new thread to make some ill-conceived, fact-free claim?

      @icanbeyourmuse

      I have my main/court character (though no one ranking) so if I make an alt it has to be ... I dunno, random family or whatever. I admit I'm still a little iffy on how staff is going to handle that since the last time it was discussed it wasn't clear if those people could even live in the main city where the RP happens.

      Fwiw, that's generally all that's required for me to pick someone out in a scene and pose at or engage them. Just seeing my name in someone else's pose is a basic flag for 'RP maybeeeee?'

      There are... plenty of times and scenarios where it can be hard to get even that. Especially on a bigger game like Arx. So I'm not going to be picky about how someone signals interest. As long as they display 'hey I am RPing here and I see you RPing and acknowledge your character's existence' that's... probably enough?

      At least to pose back. At a point, the RP itself requires more significant engagement, but that's not usually hard if the person isn't a potato.

      Another wannabe L&L player here, so happy to see some options. Am doing Arx and Fifth Kingdom right now (both have their pros and cons, Fifth definitely needs more players), and I've tried Kushiel's in the past but always had problems getting in touch with staff while apping.

      @EMDA I'd not heard of the last two (I guess I'd never looked at MUDs)... but they seem to be versions of the same game? Is there some drama behind this? I don't want to play on someone's angry protest game, really!

      @DeadEmpire Oh, I absolutely agree it will be more interesting for longer. I think this is one of those talking past each other kind of things. There's no question that Arx's system is a gajillion times deeper, and that there's far, far more for you to spend on. That said, if the dinos are never actually reaching the top where they level out, then simple math, you can't catch up.

      What you can do is incentivize newbies and quickly bring them to a certain level of competence, which it does (well). The potential danger is that the scaling required for dinos devalues said basic competence. Group activities like the crisis and investigation systems seem good for this, as long as the default difficulties aren't too high? Like I've got my noob char in a +crisis that's about to resolve, I'm really curious to see how it pans out.

      @DeadEmpire said in Coming Soon: Arx, After the Reckoning:

      Except for maybe the fact that they likely weren't really raising too many skills at the end.

      You're completely burying the lead here. This is the entire reason I made the comparison, and it's the whole point. Getting a skill to 5 didn't take that much, and once you did it, that was it (you're right about the voting, but there was a lot of auto-xp you could get similar to Arx's journals, via converting CP). Almost all the people playing focused characters had 5s by the time they'd played for a couple months.

      Dinos didn't stomp on people because they had vastly superior stats (with the very limited exceptions of the few legendary people). They stomped on people because they were staff friends or staffalts and the judging was rigged. Events that were pure statistical contests (like the pentathlons) were regularly won by non-dino random nobodies.

      Still not saying Arx's system is bad or that Firan's is preferable (for tons of other reasons, and the xp vote scaling is great), but with 3-4 skills you need for combat, plus gear, plus champions and guards that you can dump resources into, I think it's impossible to say that the total range of character advancement isn't vastly wider. That means by definition the gap between newbie and dino will be wider, and grow wider with time.

      @Kanye-Qwest Yeah, that's mostly the idea.

      I mean, to pivot a little to the purely positive side, there is a lot to be said for how it being a 'lot' of game is also a great thing. Like the other night, with your 'I don't want to post this now but OK I'm gonna' 'OH SHIT!!!' emit, as huge as that was, and some of the other emits have been, they're not even on my radar because I have OTHER big things to be thinking about. That there can actually be multiple BIG THINGS at once, that you can not have an in to one and have ins to another - that's downright amazing.

      I came in with seemingly huge-ass plot hooks right on my sheet, and that's something that totally awesome. For as much as I sometimes feel totally lost I've found my way into things somewhat (I think!), and I'm hopeful. Unlike on Firan, I have trust, so I'm willing to play through the overwhelming feelings and see where it gets me 🙂

      @Kanye-Qwest I was commenting on someone else commenting on the XP, and others have also, so... I think obviously some other people do perceive something? My perception is a newbie perception, which is to say, things look big and overwhelming and I realize that probably inflates it somewhat. But maybe newbie perspectives are valueable, even if they're not 100% accurate. But I don't mean any of this as highly critical.

      @Roz Yeah, I think that's more or less what I'm trying to say and you're saying it better. I don't mean to be throwing down, just chiming in.

      @saosmash It was definitely a combative animal.

      Re: investigations, I trust staff knows what they're doing re balancing all this stuff, but the high difficulties do kind of illustrate newbie barrier to entry feeling. And the investigation side of things is where I feel far more stumped than worrying over combat. My char didn't come with it, I don't know if it's worth investing in it, but without it... like, I don't have access to clues unless I bump into people who happen to want to share them, etc. It can feel a little aimless. My char has gotten information, but none of it is in clue form, and I know that also codely gates things like access to +crises (where the real meat of 'doing things' seems to occur?)

    • RE: Coming Soon: Arx, After the Reckoning

      I don't mean to be fighting the whole game feeling like they need to defend it. I like the game! See again: way easier to talk at length about negatives, where people gloss over any positive comments 🙂

      @saosmash I've seen people talking to each other about getting their pets to rank 5 (presumably from 4) so obviously some people are using the training on them every week. Great that you don't, but still something where people are going to get way ahead.

      @brent I was on the receiving end of the @rs stuff and was in the top list from it those 2 weeks (and may have also benefited from the massive XP cron bug AHEM) so I do appreciate the mild bit of catchup there. But it's just those two weeks. I think the scaling stuff is good. I think it has some warts of a more social kind. I've seen people in my family/house complain about how they'll rp with various folks and get few or no votes back (and I always get back far less than I give), so that's definitely a kind of clique/entrenchment thing.

      Maybe I should clarify that the biggest 'tryhard' thing seems like the tasks/support (which I understand also feeds into the retainers?).

      @roz Fair enough, accuracy is good (I don't know who said people were earning 200xp a week, wasn't me). I don't think the game's dinoism is the worst or anything, but maybe weirdly, it feels actually worse than Firan, when the game is otherwise so focused on being the anti-Firan. Like maybe all the sinks just widen the gap (where you don't only need your high investigate, but a retainer assisting your investigates)? I dunno.

    • RE: Coming Soon: Arx, After the Reckoning

      @Roz Ok, well, point was mostly people have tons of XP, not specifically trying to argue about legendary skills. If they're not saving it, or haven't quite saved that particular amount, that doesn't really negate the point. There's also a lot of others systems like that; again the retainers (which I guess earn their own weekly xp if you have teaching, so its a massive advantage to older chars) or even all the things like prestige, resources you can grind (another very tryhard favoring system), the gear stuff, etc.

      I'm not saying that the game is bad because it's tryhard/dino friendly... just that it maybe is a bit.

      @Roz

      Aren't the people not buying the rank 6 skills because they're not allowed to, not because they don't have the XP (or couldn't get it)? I know I've seen someone say they have rank 6 for the crafting sub-specialties, because those are not restricted the same way.

      Anyway, between the high costs, massive casual vs. normal vs. tryhard XP rates, and the retainer stuff, I don't see how the whole thing won't become pretty ridiculously skewed. I'm not entirely faulting the game for that either, because dinos are always a problem, but it's absolutely a thing.

    • RE: Coming Soon: Arx, After the Reckoning

      I restarted on the game now after my first kind of failed attempt (discussed elsewhere with the hooker drama), and I've found the experience pretty enjoyable this time around. While it's impossible to say if she's representative or if I just got lucky, my character who I picked fairly sight unseen has turned out to come with major plot hooks. I'm not sure if it's always clear how to pursue them, but a lot of that is me being a noob I'm sure, and I'm stumbling along!

      There is some RP that's hard to access, and it's easy to be overlooked in scenes as a newbie unless you have a close relation there to introduce you around, but to a degree that's just normal social stuff. The @randomscene for newbies is a nice incentive, though it wears off fast and mostly leads to people drive-by posing you those first few weeks before forgetting you. Still, it's something.

      I will say that watching people talk about XP on the family channels etc, it seems like the game is already totally off the rails dinosaur wise. People talk about spending 1k+ xp for a new stat, plus everyone also has all these bodyguards, animals, many of which I've heard discussed having stats that would easily eclipse starter PCs. It's not much of an issue for me as a non-combative, although I did spectacularly fail the first thing I was asked to roll, and it felt kind of crappy being hit with that investigating my main plot-hook. You'd think they might have rolled stuff my character had more than 4 dice in, when it was clearly the first thing she'd do as a new character with baby stats. I'm trying to bring them up and I've raked in a good bit of xp, but for non-combat, you run into the problem of not knowing WHAT skills will be relevant or even asked for, and their anti jack-of-all trades things could easily punish you there.

      Er, that was long, but I want to stress that my experience has been far more positive more than not. The sad fact is it's often easier to talk about negatives, because the positives - well, they're great? What else do you say? 🙂

      I agree. Oh how I agree. But eventually you'll have to explain to someone what a "+1" means, and you'll have to find some kind of way to explain it. You have XP to spend, how do you know what to spend it on. You are building a situation for people to overcome, how do you decide what numbers to put where to make it challenging.

      I mean, I understand why the system nerds want to understand the underlying system! It's a reasonable impulse. But they're also the most math-literate so they could probably understand more complex computations? Like maybe you provide documentation of the guts if they really want to dig into it (I know there are some ridiculously complicated pen and paper systems out there, too - and someone, somewhere, actually learns to play those!), but for most people provide a basic chart like she did that gives them the big picture.

      The trust thing I just think is ridiculous, to be blunt. Not that I disbelieve it, but... if you don't trust staff, idk, what are you even doing and how is some text of pretend dice making you trust where you didn't before?

      I'm probably weird in that I don't particularly care about the dice-feel, and I like the idea behind @faraday's chart above, where you look at what you want and make the system conform rather than the opposite way around.

      It always seems so weird to do a lot of the stuff we do on MUs, using systems that are designed for easy math at the game table, when we're playing on supercomputers that can calculate out all the ridiculous complexity, extra steps, etc that we could ever want! Stuff like hit locations, armor systems, etc are all just eyes glaze over if you have to do them step by step yourself, but if the magic box can do them for you, you get all the extra detail with none of the effort.
