@faraday said in Why no Star Trek games?:

Comic games are also often consent, so I'm definitely not saying that it can't work. Just that I have my pet theory on why it seems to have fallen out of favor, and it has little to do with advancement.

Oh, yeah. No, never did superhero games. I would imagine that's a way different demographic. And much more prone to actual physical conflict. I guess I assume a Star Trek game would have more RP in common with Pern: mostly social with the occasional well-choreographed co-op battle sequence.

@krmbm If by "use that one" you mean I click on it and it takes me to something that looks like a mush login screen, then yes.

It's a functional, free client that should let you connect to whatever MUSH you want. I use it all the time when I get firewalled.

In short: what am I the player to do here?

      This. A lot of this.

It's all well and good to have a great idea!!! But it's harder than you might think to make that idea interactive. Making a world people can look at is easy; making a world people can play with is hard.

Figure out how characters can touch the theme, not just look at it. Super important.

    • RE: A Regency MU (Conceptual)

@pyrephox said in A Regency MU (Conceptual):

@krmbm That...is a good question. Especially if you're having debutantes as a focus. Girls were presented as young as twelve, historically, although fifteen to eighteen were more common, and usually married between 1-3 years of their coming out.

That's exactly where I was headed. I'm super-squicked by underage PCs (even PCs that look underage weird me out), so it's a HARD PASS if there's not some kind of historical futzing to up the ages. 🙂

I love buy-in. Thanks to the people who've been playing this weekend. Life is stupid right now. RPing pixie-fights helps. 🙂

    • RE: How do *you* make social scenes fun and enjoyable?

@kestrel said in How do *you* make social scenes fun and enjoyable?:

Generally, to be honest, I don't. I don't feel the need to force a scene to be enjoyable if I don't think it will be; I just sit it out.

I was starting to feel like the only one. 😛

When I was younger and had FOMO, I would suffer through them just so I didn't omg get left out!!!

Nowadays? Enh. I make social scenes fun and enjoyable by not showing up and ruining them. 🙂

      stuff about ports

Just wanted to toss in: a long time ago, you helped fix the web portal so I could use it behind my work firewall, and it still works great. 🙂

I was one of those "you will pry my client out of my COLD DEAD FINGERS" people till quarantine. I gave up my gaming PC for workspace for almost a year. Now, even though I have a client back on my desktop, I never use it.

it should be more of a thing to just be able to condense a recap to a link to the relevant logs.

Sign me up. Especially if it means we can skip 10 text-threads of people recapping the plot.

    • RE: Paying for a MU*?

@il-volpe said in Paying for a MU*?:

ETA: As I understand it, McCaffery's trouble was that she thought that the existence of a free online Pern computer game would devalue the IP license for a Pern video game. When she figured out that MUSHes and video games are not much alike she stopped but became precious about people not RPing in her favourite Pern locations, which was her prerogative I suppose.

      Kinda.

The "preciousness" had something to do with plans to use Benden and Ruatha as locations in the game.

I never heard of any confirmed reports of anyone actually getting a C&D from McCaffrey other than Dee Dreslough, who was making tons of (absolutely gorgeous) fan-art, including commissioned work for people. MUSHes took some heat for posting logs that were perceived as fan-fic, and supposedly McCaffrey sent letters to people to take those down. But that may be apocryphal, as it was always "a friend of mine got one."

Old info about it on Fan Lore + archives of alt.fan.pern.

@mietze said in GMs and Players:

I just don't see writing a TS scene to be any more of a waste of time than the vast majority of court scenes I've gone to on any game.

I do. I find TS tedious. Like, I'd rather :takes a sip of klah than :takes off her top.

If I join a L&L game, I am probably there for court scenes. Not TS. I want my game to do what it says on the tin.

      YMMV.

We're going to smooth out the drama, no worries. Darkwater will be course corrected and Thrax/Gyre plots will continue to hum along.

If someone is bringing OOC drama to you, please do let us know. We've had some complaints already and have spoken with people to let them know that's not ok. If it keeps up, we'd like to know so we can address it. Please and thank you!

No one's really "bringing it" to me, so much as I basically connected for the first or second time RIGHT SMACK in the middle of some big shake-up with people taking resources out, people being demoted, blah blah blah.

I don't really want to get in the middle of the OOC theater. 🙂
