    • RE: Calaveras: Adult Fiction Drama MU

@goldfish said in Calaveras: Adult Fiction Drama MU:

What role can I help fill? Is there a gap in something? Shortage of a type? An imbalance?

We have a lot of white hats, so a bad guy would be "novel," but might also kinda be stuck to get involved with all the super good guys on the grid. There are a couple of bad guys, and a couple of cops, though.

Right now, the medical/hospital-affiliated and local business owners are the most common character types.

(Also, is it a sausage fest or a clam bake? I like that relationship RP and I can play either gender but if'n you need more of one than the other....)

+census says it's 34 male to 26 female, but it's probably dependent on when you're online. It's not so heavily skewed one way or the other at the moment.

So, yeah. Probably doesn't help narrow it down a lot, but it is pretty wide open right now. I can tell you that the one thing we have a lot of are people that are taking care of an aging relative.

    • RE: Differences Between MUDs and Everything Else? (MUSHes, MUXes, etc)

@SparklesTheClown said in Differences Between MUDs and Everything Else? (MUSHes, MUXes, etc):

Like, at what point in a game's design do you think an average MUSHer looks at a game and goes "that's too MUD for me"?

It's about documentation for me, not about how far something skews in terms of code. That is, typing kill monster/sword/optional switch/non-optional switch is clunky, but I have no problem doing it to do it is long as help kill is a useful file. Everything I need as a player should be documented in an easy-to-read help file.

Look at Ares for a good example of what I mean. Every command is well-documented, every system and admin responsibility has a tutorial.

Even though coded combat is all about combat thing1/optionalwtf=thing2/more options=dude for reals, I love playing with it, 'cause I can just type help combat and all the commands are right there, or go to /help/combat on the portal. I would never have imagined myself giddily roll-playing my way through scenes, but the documentation makes it easy to turn potentially clunky strings of code into useful RP baubles.

If you build it and then document it, people will come, Ray.

If you want something super-easy, try Calaveras - http://calaveras.wikidot.com

This site is dedicated theme to an adult drama oriented MUSH. We are focused on adult oriented RolePlay with a more direct focus centered around town members. The intention is to include an inordinate amount of drama with Calaveras as the central point of activity. This is meant to be similar to most adult television dramas. What we may see as an abnormal amount of activity involving police, rescue, fire, criminal activity, drug activity and the like is simply everyday life for citizens of Calaveras. It seems a surmountable endeavor, but they juggle these events along with their personal drama.

It's sort of slice-of-life if life was a pie full of drama instead of responsibilities and shit.

Is this a reference to a predatory man, or a harem-building woman with ideations on any man that's definitely taken?

A woman that makes grabby-hands at every dude that falls out of CG.

      We all know the type.

Not the right forum for the deets. 😉

Suffice it to say, they've turned off the portal and the scenes feature. So I had a character there for a minute... and now I don't.

Every time I drive through New Mexico I think how cool it'd be to set a game there.

      I also lived there.

Unless your plan is to set your game in either Albuquerque or Santa Fe, you're gonna have to set it in a small, economically depressed town with a considerable methamphetamine problem and the only store for miles is Walmart.

Or you could pretendy funtime it up.

@faraday said in If you work hard, son, maybe someday you'll RP:

ETA: However, I did envision the scene system being used for this end.

+scene/start Somewhere in Westeros=open/Looking for RP - maybe down by the dragons? I'm flexible

That shows up both on the web scenes list, the in-game +where, and the in-game scenes list. I don't really know how to advertise any better than that, but I'm all ears if somebody comes up with something.

I think the thing that's missing on this is some sort of announcement about the open scene. Right now, at least on GH (and on SL, when I played there), the trend is to start the scene, then note on the RP channel that you started a scene.

Just spit-balling - If there was some kind of announcement option (e.g., - +scene/start Somewhere in Westeros=announce/Looking for RP - maybe down by the dragons? I'm flexible) that pushed a little "[RP Requests] Bob started an open scene: <Details>" comment...?

Thank you. 🙂 I feel like a lot of that is just rose-colored glasses (and the fact that we were trying to break new ground in the genre), but it's nice to hear, even umpteen years later. \o/

A fair few people are kicking around on HT these days, if you can get over the whole "ew MOO" thing.

    • RE: Why are there so many MUs set in Maine?

      @aria I didn't play The Reach, so the reference isn't landing. 😞

If anyone honestly cares - which I doubt, because it's not even a remotely interesting story - we picked Maine because we were doing a small-town sandbox at one point, and I found a town named "Boothbay" and thought it was the coolest name for a town. While sandboxing, we played in Boothbay itself (which is a goddamn adorable town if you're bored and wanna drive around google maps).

When we started thinking about production, we wanted to support a wider variety of PCs than would realistically live in a small town in Maine, so we decided to turn tiny real Boothbay into giant fake New Coventry.

Could we have put it in New Hampshire or wherever else people are saying it should be? Sure. But read @Pyrephox's post for why many of us have hearts in our eyes for Maine. 🙂
