And you get to RP any NPC at any time as befits the game.

I suppose there are some staffers out there who get their jollies NPCing Princess Leia in a medal ceremony, but most of us find it to be a terrible chore.

I assume this is where the "NPCs are PCs, too!" argument came to life. I am not a fan of this argument.

A comment in another thread about how hard it is to find people who want to ST things for other players reminded me...

I'm really not good at figuring out people's handles on MSB, but Alexander, Carver, Penny, Dahlia, and August at GH volunteered to be storytellers, and I can't say enough nice things about them.

They run scenes, pick up RP jobs, execute longer plots, and brainstorm "cool things to do." I feel like we've gotten very lucky with the number of proactive players who are keen to tell stories for other people. ❤ ❤

It would be really awesome to be able to delete unshared scenes, though. My few false starts just hang out there, forever, and I haaaaaaaate it.

Oh, you know what - I stand corrected. You could at one point do this, but then I got concerned that someone might delete an unshared scene before the other players got around to downloading the log or whatnot. So I turned it off. Maybe I'll make it so you could do it if you're the only scene participant or something. I'll look into it.

      You can still do this.

      scene/start
%% Graham has started a new Open scene (837) here.
      scene/stop
%% Graham has stopped this scene. You can restart it at any time using scene/restart, but it will restart in a temp room and NOT in this room.
%% The scene has ended. To share the log, set the scene info (help scene info) and then use scene/share 837 to share it.
      scene/delete 837
      %% Scene deleted.

@Ninjakitten said in If you work hard, son, maybe someday you'll RP:

The one thing that leaps to mind here is that you don't seem to be able to scene/start privately in the room you're actually in, which makes sense in a Cafe but is a little weird in your apartment. 'Never RP on-grid in your apartment' is an option but also a little weird and more importantly probably not never going to happen. So you'd probably end up with announcements of scenes that go private 10 seconds later.

You actually can start a private scene in the room you're in - scene/start <name of the room>=Private - and it will happily port you off to a temp copy of your room.

That said... that's why I specified it as an an "announce" option, or to only work if the person specifically chooses the "open" option. Otherwise, you're absolutely right: most people just scene/start ; scene/privacy private which would spam the channel with scenes that then went private.

@faraday said in If you work hard, son, maybe someday you'll RP:

ETA: However, I did envision the scene system being used for this end.

+scene/start Somewhere in Westeros=open/Looking for RP - maybe down by the dragons? I'm flexible

That shows up both on the web scenes list, the in-game +where, and the in-game scenes list. I don't really know how to advertise any better than that, but I'm all ears if somebody comes up with something.

I think the thing that's missing on this is some sort of announcement about the open scene. Right now, at least on GH (and on SL, when I played there), the trend is to start the scene, then note on the RP channel that you started a scene.

Just spit-balling - If there was some kind of announcement option (e.g., - +scene/start Somewhere in Westeros=announce/Looking for RP - maybe down by the dragons? I'm flexible) that pushed a little "[RP Requests] Bob started an open scene: <Details>" comment...?

...the very fact that I would have to dangle something enticing on an RP Requests channel to even get RP is some of my problem with the state of the games...

I don't think people wanting "something enticing" in their RP is a problem. Personally.

When you ask for RP, what are you saying/doing? Are you bringing something to the table?

[RP Requests] Bob looks for RP.

      vs

[RP Requests] Bob looks to start a scene at the diner where we discover that the hamburgers have been made out of ground up children the whole time.

@Lotherio Nope nope. I don't think our paths ever crossed till we were playing on Calaveras, and @thesuntsar told me that @bear_necessities didn't seem like a crazy person, so we started playing together.

And now everyone thinks we are the same person. 😄

@Cupcake Yeah, I'm stumped (<-- it works on multiple levels).

I am in the process of setting up better upgrading for the game so conflicts are less of an issue down the road, and I reported the one weird error over on the Ares discussion forum - https://forum.aresmush.com/t/v0-49-released/400/5

I will keep poking at it tonight after work and see if I see anything else that I missed while upgrading.

    • RE: Gray Harbor Discussion

@Goldfish Is it? The last two "modern" games I played on prior to GH had at least one amputee on the grid. They seem to be a popular concept right now.

Also, we're not actually drowning in amputees (which is a gross mental picture). We just have more than one playing at the moment, and at least one of the players is quite active and has a character arc / story to tell that we'd like to let him explore, so we're just cutting off people with limbs cutoff for now.

So yeah. Don't turn up looking for a sea of stumps, or you will be disappointed.

@faraday and what she's done and doing with Ares. There have been a lot of people whose first taste of Ares is on GH, and they gush about the portal all the time.

[Chat] Player (@_Handle_) says, "Yeah I love the web portal, this is the first time I've ever seen/used anything like it and its great. And it makes everything so easy"

People are throwing stuff like that out there all day. A lot of people who had quit M*ing or taken a long break have commented that they feel like they can play again solely because of being able to pose and chat from their browser.

So, yeah. Thank you for everything you've put into this project, @faraday. People are really, really digging it. ❤

    • RE: Saving Pages to the Database

My initial hang-up was (and still is) that I'm paranoid and don't necessarily trust game owners. Chalk it up to the olden days of DARK Wizards and admin that read game logs to see if people were talking shit about the game.

      However.

I realize now that this isn't a thing that should prohibit the march of technology. Yes, you probably should be able to page/PM from the portal. If I don't trust an admin enough that I worry they might be willing to read my page conversations? I definitely shouldn't be playing on their game.

When everything goes... well... I can't exactly say "according to plan," since the plan was roughly "lol let's crash these people on Gilligan's Island and have them fight the Harlem Globetrotters and a Gilligan/Skipper chimera called the Gillamonster with the Professor as the brain..."

      Anyway.

When everything goes and hilarity ensues. @bear_necessities 😄 😄 😄

So no one has to lose their minds about discussion in the ads section... <.<

      Here's the ad: https://musoapbox.net/topic/2725/gray-harbor-original-theme-horror-mystery

@Pandora said in Gray Harbor: Original Theme (Horror/Mystery):

@krmbm So, what are players meant to do? Is this a tavern-sitting, small-talk game, or is there something feasible to do even if you don't already know people?

I mean... roleplay? I hope there's something feasible to do even if you don't already know people. We have ideas for one-off events/PrPs that people are welcome to attend (one on Sunday, for example), and there will be open plots that all tie back into the basic meta-plot.

Sorry if this doesn't quite answer your question. I'm not 100% sure I follow what you're asking.

@RDC said in Gray Harbor: Original Theme (Horror/Mystery):

Hey, so this looks interesting! I have one note: the line "We have no limits on characters/concepts (except the ones that are banned)" immediately made me laugh. You may want to say "few" limits.

Hah. I've read that a billion times by now and never noticed it. Thank you, will update. 😄
