    • RE: A Game of Thrones MUX Discussion

@zombiegenesis said in A Game of Thrones MUX Discussion:

To re-focus this one: what things would people like to see on a GoT or L&L game that isn't being done elsewhere?

      Thanks. 😉

If this came up in the pages of copyright stuff, my bad, but what codebase? Curious if Ares crossed your mind at all, 'cause I'd love to see that "in production." Being able to CharGen on the web is OMG.

I've always thought that a GoT set at an AU point following the Blackfyre rebellion would be awesome. The Blackfyres win, the metaplot concerns them either tightening or losing their grip on the Iron Throne, and the subplots spin out from there.

    • RE: Wheel of Time MU(SH|X)

I might tool around with it in Ares myself. I'm not 100% sure I could run a game with my limited availability, but - if I think it's do-able - I might see how far I can take it.

If nothing else, translating the One Power into FS3 is an interesting exercise.

I've heard that book 8 is the breaking point for most people.

I made it through book <something, I forget which one it was now but I want to say five or six> many years ago, though I remember skipping huge chunks as early as book two. I'm already finding that it's a lot easier to enjoy it as a distraction from traffic than as the thing I'm entirely focused on.

And I still think an alt-timeline or post-book timeline could be fun. Aes Sedai and Asha'man team up when the Seanchan break the peace treaty or something.

With Ares in beta... any word on how this is shaping up? I'm on book 3 on Audible ATM, and it's got the hankering going.

(P.S. Listening to these on Audible at 1.25x speed is perfect.)

      @faraday said in Spotlight.:

No. As a game-runner, I don't owe anybody anything other than a comfortable and safe environment to tell their stories. Spotlight has to be earned.

      +1

Trying to write a way in to every plot for every random character drives storytellers to burnout. The best that can be asked of staff is that all players have equal access to the same opportunities.

E.g., my story is about a pirate battle, and you are playing a pretty princess, so this is not the story for your PC; you're welcome to roll a temp character for this particular plot, suggest another plot that would involve your character, or wait for an appropriate plot to come along.

    • RE: AresMUSH Updates

FWIW, the only code with which I've ever been fully proficient is MUSH code, and I've had really good luck with Ares since the beta release. I installed it according to her guide (twice), and it worked flawlessly both times.

I've been working through the coding tutorials, and it's actually pretty easy to pick up.

Also, @faraday is super-responsive on the Ares forum.

All that to say: Ares has been awesome to me since beta.

How hard is it to make a character and get approved?

That usually determines how willing I am to have a PC death.

      @arkandel 10-4.

If there's a wish-list somewhere... a "hide images till I click on some link" option (Discord/Slack-style) would be amazeballs.

      Edited -

      God bless you, @surreality.

Sorry, a forum setting? I don't need it disabled all over the interwebs.

      Just here.

Most other places have already grown out of this phase. 😞

    • RE: Umbral Shards - Alpha

      @egg I'm guessing @Rook clarified that it wasn't a Wraith game. 🙂

I didn't actually play, personally, but my husband and his buddy did. I remember them making characters, but I have no memory of what they were.

      Probably some kind of Mage.

Anyway! Good luck with the re-imagined game, @Rook, and thanks for confirming that I'm not just crazy.

Wasn't Umbral Shards a game before? In, like, 2001?

Edit: Just asked the husband, and he remembers it, too. It was weird and perhaps short-lived, but it was definitely a thing.

@lithium I used to set up a timer to "page <me>=idler" and then just have SimpleMU gag the "You paged <me> with 'idler'" and "<me> pages: idler".

It wasn't the prettiest solution, but it worked on MOO (which had no @@ equivalent).

    • RE: Regarding administration on MSB

@arkandel said in Regarding administration on MSB:

It is more likely you'd post about the guy who tried to push dick pics on you than a random person you met and had a pleasant scene with, and way more likely that others would respond to the former than the latter.

      So what though?

Maybe I misunderstand the purpose of having a forum. I took a quick look for MSB's "stated purpose" and didn't find one, so I guess maybe I'm just being the ass for assuming the point is to give people a place to discuss stuff.

Is some of that stuff just random bitching? Absolutely. Is it detrimental to the community? That's debatable.

Historical evidence shows that, if you take away the random bitching, everything else withers and dies.

I guess you could make the case that having no forum at all would be better than having a toxic one, but - again - historical evidence shows that someone will just make one if you try to take it away. And it will be more popular than whatever Feel-Goodery you try to put in its place.

Which I guess is as good a place as any for me to figure I've made my point as well as I can make it: Mods gonna mod. When the mods get to be too moddy, people vote with their feet.

Hopefully, that won't happen any time soon.

    • RE: Regarding administration on MSB

@faraday Except that "Y" has been changed in the past and been shown to have a negative impact on the activity as a whole.

I'm not trying to be a dick here. I'm just calling on a collective past experience. When IGU and WORA coexisted, WORA was always more active. When IGU and WORA both went down for various reasons, WORA was reanimated (many times) and IGU was left dead. We could just chalk that up to the past, but even now we see that the most active forum is the Hog Pit.

The people that "might" show up if there was no Hog Pit? Could just make a new forum. It's not hard.

At this point, instead of asserting that the most active part of this community is keeping people away - people who are not currently contributing - why not make another community where the constructive-only people will have a home?

Instead of burning down our house because people who don't even live here don't like the backyard, just build a different neighborhood. If people like your neighborhood better, they'll drop by. If not, then the two peacefully coexist and everyone is happy. \o/

@faraday said in Regarding administration on MSB:

Which is the majority? I honestly don't know. I do think that pointing to "well hog pit has more posts" is not really a valid benchmark of what the activity could be if the board had a better reputation across the community and more people weren't afraid of being piled on for posting a dissenting opinion.

We could argue that we don't know what the activity could be if the board theme was rainbow unicorns with three heads made out of chainsaws.

What we know is that the people here use the Hog Pit more than any other forum. Invalidating actual statistics because they don't agree with your side of the argument is a pretty shitty way to argue.
