    • RE: Regarding administration on MSB

I've been a semi-quiet follower of WORA in its many forms since... uh... it existed.

I gotta admit: As soon as I started seeing the mods making all these plans to Improve the Community, Engage the Users, and Create a Better Experience, I sighed and braced for the inevitable.

Like it or not, there's a reason that the Hog Pit - which has a gate to entry - accounts for 40% of the board's total posts: It's entertaining. When you start moderating the fun away, when you start trying to make the place full of constructive blah blah blah, it gets boring, people wander off, and it dies a heat death.

We've been bringing WORA back from the dead every time the forum was lost for almost 20 years; notice no one is doing the same for IGU? Yeah, that's 'cause it was boring.

      Don't make MSB boring. 😞

Is the forum being super wonky in terms of maintaining connection, or is it just me?

But one setting idea I think we batted around here at least once was a mirror world during the search for the Dragon. You have a sort of secret war going on between the White Tower and the Black Ajah/Darkfriends and False Dragons can pop up here and there, with the ultimate goal of fulfilling enough of the prophesies to legitimize them as the Dragon Reborn (if you die or get gentled, obvs you are not the guy).

Quoted because this idea is awesomesauce.

@Seraphim73 Never finished the books. 😛 The world is interesting. 30,000 pages of "and then we go here and do nothing" is not.

    • RE: Wheel of Time MU(SH|X)

I'd at least poke around. I haven't actually played anywhere since February/March, but I've still got the hankering.

I did a brief stint (a few times) on Arx, and my main problem with their code was the total lack of usable help files. If you did go with Evennia, it'd be nice if you picked up a coder that was really diligent about documenting everything, and writing decent "how to" guides. I think a lot of people in M* are already familiar with @faraday's code, so - if you are willing to wait till Ares launch - that would probably be cool. Or even build your game on PennMUSH with FS3.

That said, the code-base matters much less than the setting and plot.

My suggestion would be, rather than worrying about the book timelines at all, do the Alt-U thing. If you want Aiel, Seanchan, and Asha'man, write in a back-story that allows them to be used (or a plot that opens them up).

On the other side of what @Tempest said about powers, I played on Cuendillar for quite some time, and there was a wide range of power levels on PCs. I played my level 3 Channeler as long as my level 7 Channeler, and never felt like one got more traction than the other.

It's like any other game: There will absolutely be e-peens on display, but you can attract people who DGAF about their numbers as long as their numbers don't exclude them from the cool stuff.

    • RE: High Fantasy

@Tempest @Three-Eyed-Crow I'd be down for WoT. There was a game out there for a while (Cuendillar), but it fizzled. I want to say Nymeria had something to do with its eventual decline, but that could just be me misremembering my ancient MU* history.

Though I'd rather see some sort of alt-universe version, where there's no Dragon Reborn running around, Gary Stuing all over the place.

    • RE: Desc Me LA?

@desc Los Angeles=You are probably sitting in your car on the 110, wondering if it would be faster to take the 105 over to the 710, but then the traffic comes on and you realize that it's just as bad on the 710 right now. So then you start wondering how much the ticket is if you get in the FastTrak lane without a pass, and you see a cop go by in that lane, so you decide not to. KROQ keeps playing Nickelback songs, 98.7 keeps playing commercials, but - hey - at least the Dodgers are winning!%r%rOh, but getting in and out of Dodger Stadium suuuuuuuucks, and tickets are like $90 for good seats, so just hope you can get home in time to catch from the 5th inning on. #VoteForJT

While I have too many projects to really take this on, my primary warning about Wikidot is to be careful with how much content you add at once to a new wiki. I've had my entire wiki get removed wholesale (which also fucked my karma), because they marked me for spam even though it wasn't. That's why I don't use Wikidot anymore, otherwise I love Wikidot.

A friend of mine had the exact same thing happen a few years back. They yanked the wiki for an unfinished project without warning.

We're going to smooth out the drama, no worries. Darkwater will be course corrected and Thrax/Gyre plots will continue to hum along.

If someone is bringing OOC drama to you, please do let us know. We've had some complaints already and have spoken with people to let them know that's not ok. If it keeps up, we'd like to know so we can address it. Please and thank you!

No one's really "bringing it" to me, so much as I basically connected for the first or second time RIGHT SMACK in the middle of some big shake-up with people taking resources out, people being demoted, blah blah blah.

I don't really want to get in the middle of the OOC theater. 🙂

      Baltus also got a player.

      Possibly briefly.

I seem to have picked him up in a time of intense OOC drama for Darkwater and may put him back on the roster.

    • RE: Plots and Spoilers

I've run a lot of plots on Pern games, where people tend to have hyper-active "fluffy bunny syndrome," so I just got into the habit of putting a trigger warning on every scene I ran and on every plot I created.

If things did get dark (by Pern standards), I was covered without the worry of spoiling anything. If they didn't, then no harm, no foul.

Something along the lines of, "As always, this scene may involve violence, death, etc., so please consider your comfort level before joining."

    • RE: Best IC Character Deaths

On a Pern game (that we both recently quit for unrelated reasons), a friend and I had a running joke to see who could kill off more of our own PCs. I wound up with...

A Harper investigating a murder that wound up dying along with the murderer.
A criminal staked out for Thread after being framed for arson.
A weyrling rider that wound up dying in an explosion because he kept dicking around with his flamethrower.
A pirate killed in a raid after kidnapping a young Lord Holder.

They were all pretty fun deaths to play, partially because PC deaths on Pern are pretty rare, so doing them on-camera tends to generate a lot of ripple-RP.

    • RE: MSB: The meta-discussion

@Thenomain said in MSB: The meta-discussion:

Someone whose opinion I respect says that Soapbox has gotten boring, and that's the downside of it; being afraid to offend is not conductive to discussion. Sometimes discussions will get heated, and that has to be okay; even frustration or open criticism needs its safe space.

All of that said, I am elated that it's largely changed. I'm seeing different kinds of online games discussed and advertised. A lot of what I'm seeing (and a lot of what I'm saying!) can be too analytical--get your hands dirty, people, and make games and play games and rar!--but a lot of people who have been too afraid to say anything are saying things for the first time in ever. That's awesome.

As a long time member of WORA - as far as I know, I've had an account on every version since there were actual forums - this pretty much sums it up for me.

I've never been a particularly active poster, primarily because I don't play the games "you guys" play. But I've always kept tabs on it over the years, and I've seen it go from "the place where Rasheem re-posts whatever new racist slur he found somewhere on the internet this morning" to "Peverel's place where we're not allowed to get personal" to what it seems to be now: "the place where everyone goes to talk about the 'wouldn't it be great ifs' but not much seems to materialize."

It's not as funny as it used to be. It also doesn't seem as likely to spawn a WoD run by WORA-members which will inevitably implode under the weight of all those egos. There's not as much truly awesome drama to read. But there's also not as many stupid fucking in-jokes to read.

So you win some, you lose some.

I still like knowing it's here. Even if I'm not playing anything at all at the moment.
