    • RE: How did you discover text-based gaming?

We didn't have a computer in the house until I was 16, and I was a sports/outdoors kid who didn't really see the point anyway. Then when I was 17 I got sick, and chained to my room for a good year, unable to get much out of bed at all, and my mum got me a laptop. Anyway, I was checking my hotmail when I saw the chat section link on the MSN homepage.I was bored and craved some sort of interaction with people after the initial onslaught of friends visiting turned into a trickle and then just about nobody, so I clicked. It didn't take me long to discover roleplay there, first in the teen section, then interests/entertainment sections. I met @coin there. They were fun times. Then MSN shut down its Chat service, and I migrated to IRC rp, before a friend of mine suggested a mush about.. oh, 4 or 5 years ago now. I've been doing that since.

ETA: I still miss one thing about MSNchat, and that's the constant influx of new people. By being direct linked to one of the biggest online portals at the time, there were never any shortage of recruits to join our crazy ranks.

    • RE: Scenes You Have Always Wanted to Have...

I always wanted one of my characters to be murdered in bed by a fem fatal assassin. In the middle of loin grinding there be sudden death, and I look back and see all those little warning signs that both I and my character ignored, and I'm pretty sure I start giggling like mad.

I did the flipside of that once. Though I didn't do the murder I did a kidnapping by cuffing her up and selling her to her enemy. That was fun. I mean, sure, it blew up like crazy later in the story when some of her friends tried to do the rescue and it became an OOC nightmare I'm glad I wasn't part of (since my character just ran away at first sign of trouble). But for a while it was pure awesome.

There lies my beef with the current down vote. I'm all for down voting, but it shouldn't be hidden when you do.

If it's just popularity do we even need it?

I don't use it as a popularity tool. I'll upvote posts I think have a point, and I'll downvote posts I think are seriously stupid. The former happens a lot more often than the latter, mind you. I think it offers a useful insight into how people are responding to the discussions; not everybody will actually make a written reply, and not every post is even worthy of a written reply.

No doubt some people just downvote/plus vote based on who is making a post, but I don't think that is even close to universal.

      Ha.

Also: Jesus, @Surreality, how do you DO it?!

On a more serious note, I think if you're gonna have upvotes you might as well have downvotes. I'd love if you could see who did the downvotes, though. Not so much because I need to know who hates me, but so the people I downvote can know I was the one who did it.

I thought it was campy, and had low production value

This was really offputting for me, and though I love the Dresden Files, it was why I didn't bother. I don't mind my books changing for movies/tv, as what works in a book doesn't always work for tv, but I do hate it when they do it cheap.

Also, Black Sails is back. That's a show I felt had a lot of holes in its first season, but stuck with it just cuz I liked the whole pirate thing. Second season I thought was really good, and so far the first 2 episodes of Season 3 have been great.

Checked out two new shows: Luficer ( fell flat to me) and The Magicians (which I thought had some potential).

Thoughts on The Man In The High Castle?

I'm kinda digging it, up to episode 4 atm. It has twists, and the villains are actually intelligent (in fact it's the heroes who're not)

I liked it, and thought it got better as it got going.

Not my thing. I just never bought into D&D as somewhere I want to RP. Its awesome for RPGs on my computer, though.

@Arkandel I'm with @Coin on this. I've always believed that in historical settings what you're going for is plausibility over accuracy. If it could get a pass on TV/In the movies/In a pulp fiction book, then it's more than good enough for me. I also agree that female characters need to be able to have agency outside of male relations.

I'd say the Vikings gave their women quite a lot of freedom, as an option. Plop them down in Anglo-Saxon and Celtic Britain, and you get a hodgepodge of culture and religion.

    • RE: Are there any historically-themed WoD mu*?

Eh. I've had fun on a Lords and Ladies game (Steel and Stone). Like all games it comes down to what you make of it. It was no more (and for a while at least significantly less) toxic than most WOD games I've played.

ETA: I've got interest, @Arkandel. Dark Ages with Vampires and Werewolves and fucking genuine Inquisitors seems awesome to me.

@Coin and @Three-Eyed-Crow, that is one of my favorite shows ever. I was so bummed that it only lasted a single season. It was absolutely fantastic.

I also liked Veronica Mars, teenager investigator trope though it might be.

    • RE: How hard should staff enforce theme?

Staff should always enforce theme. This can be done in a variety of ways, but I've found that having a few NPCs around is a good way to do it, offering the 'canon' viewpoint.

Of course to enforce theme, you need to both have an articulated idea of what your theme is, and easy access to theme. It shouldn't be buried deep in news files.

I've been looking forward to the 100 coming back. For a show that started off as barely mediocre, it really picked up in its second season to become one of my favorites.

    • RE: Feelings of not being wanted...

Quite often if you're feeling unwanted, you probably are. Or if not directly unwanted, at least not highly (or as highly as you would have liked) valued right at this moment.

This isn't the end of the world. Don't take it personal. Not everybody likes everybody else equally.

I think it is Staff's responsibility to leave plot and story accessible for everybody, but beyond that its the player who has to give enough to the game to be wanted in return. If you can't get into one group, try another. If one character fails, perhaps try another. Change it up so that you have something to contribute.

If you want people to invest in your enjoyment, you have to invest in theirs.

If you don't have the time, you have to have quality, or being friendly, or being funny, or whatever.

And even if you're perfect, sometimes RP becomes a zero-sum game, in which case a particular player can only phase you in if he or she phases someone else out, because there's only so many scenes they can fit into their schedule, and that's not about you so much as them.

I do want to try something new (I currently RP nowhere with noone), but I know nothing about Amber, or the level of learning curve required to make a character in that setting.
