    • RE: New GoT MUSH?

It's a good question, though I will say that just placing it in the same universe as the books/show really will inspire some players to emulate the action and story styles. It is one of the main values of using any established setting, especially a television/film one. The players have an example of how to have things go.

I am curious how that would go over with shared settings, such as the Thieves World series of books, where the various authors felt a little out of step for style, substance, and so on (to me).

Most of the fun on a game is partaking of a consensual belief that there is fun to be had and you are having it. The fun isn't an illusion, but you can certainly talk yourself out of it, even when it is perfectly fair and healthy fun. Attitude does a lot to how you perceive the world.

@mercutio Mm, probably. It would also be easy to use the exact same values, but resolve in a different way.

In case anyone is wondering, BESM uses a simple roll the die under your stat value, which is a common way of doing things really. However, to change power scales they just increase the die size. So your detective who used to make their human scale investigation checks 7 out of 10 times might now make it 7 out of 20 times in a super human game.

You could make success mean being told what would it take to get your character to willingly (if not happily) do this thing?

Then its up to you to provide that circumstance.

I feel that if Clark Kent gets to be gay, then Lois Lane gets to be a gay male if the players so desire. Don't care that much about player takes on characters, but the point of a universe with a canon list of player characters seems to be being recognizable individually and in potential relationships.

Otherwise, Robin can pair up with The Question in his first appearance, and Wonder Woman and Vandal Savage can be bitter divorcees who still love one another deeply.

    • RE: How are you coping with COVID (and other 2020 fun)?

      Coping methods etc?

All day fires, making sure to watch shows and movies together, reading both social issue and classic books to discuss, playing video games together, look at images from around the world in a Facebook group called what I see from my front window, cook longer prep meals, spend time helping people destress over possible infections.

We isolate as strongly as we can to protect my wife's patients, so no contact save her coworkers.

    • RE: Interactive GM'ing (Or how to make a dark theme actually dark)

I suspect that many players who enjoy horror on the screen don't realize the amount of slow burn and setup of attitudes etc it needs. Body horror is (excuse the pun) visceral exactly because it pulls on things that many directly understand. Anything more complicated requires that you be in the mindset of your character and soak in why something is so horrible.

Vampire originally included the horror of preying on your own kind, being isolated from your previous life, and living with the Beast which could take over. It's still in the book, but I don't think its in the image of vampires very much anymore.

Most of the supernatural is treated as superpowers now.

I'd play the fuck out of this relationship.

I think that is why they are divorcees.

Just saying that once you open the characters to non-canon, you may as well go all the way, or you'll end up with the appearance or the actuality of biases based on favorite story arcs, personal preferences and variable enforcement as staff opinions change.

@Sundown That's what I was talking about. Be proactive and persistent about motivation/inspiration as much as with skills as if it was to pay the bills.

I've seen many artists who "like to draw", and think that means they have a vocation, or even the skills to be a pro.

      So, uh, design your system?
Decide how far you want to require players to be controlled by dice results.
Decide how fast you want that to be able to happen.
Decide if others, or strong beliefs can fight this, and how hard.
Figure out how much pre-made detail you want (lists of traits, convictions, personality traits) you want to include.
Decide how much you want the players to detail their characters prior to social encounters, sp they can be held to playing consistently.
Figure out how to reward playing this in the way you intend.

Eh, MU's rolled from RPGs which were expanded war games. In (most) war games the time for negotiation has past.

    • RE: Kushiel's Debut

Lords and Ladies is definitely a genre unto itself.

The fact that there is a canon codified way of dealing with sexuality at least means that folks may at least be carrying the specific Kushiel setting along with any usual TS hijinks.

@Sunny I wanted a low level (I think not sure) occult concept. I knew it required staff approval (because that is on the wiki). I was reading the books to learn every angle I needed for the type of play IO was aiming to create. If I had been told I probably wouldn't get it, but to go ahead anyhow, that would have been aces. If I had been asked to talk about what level of actual "power" I wanted, and found the concept out of bounds, that would have been aces too.

As stated, asking someone to prove they can play a concept by playing something else, doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Discussion of how often the concept is imagined as having an impact, and to what magnitude (what we call risk analysis in QA), that would be sensible.

    • RE: TTRPG's You've Wanted to MU* (But Probably Won't)

@faraday I wonder if some of those settings would work out better doing shorter stints with a tighter focus? Sort of like (apologies to which place this is) the Horror MU* that has archetypes that are played by players and given a new character for each story.

Overall I think any game setting and mechanics can be used to measure and describe characters and circumstances, but should not be used to arbitrate results. Sort of trait based but based on written rules.

Perhaps there is some way to use game-like means to arbitrate results, but I don't think that fits most players.

I hope all this defense of KD isn't based on what I posted.

I think that Kushiel's canon make PC sexuality more flavorful, a better fit for the given game. Despite that sexuality can make you a GOD in the Laurel K Hamilton Anitaverse, I wouldn't feel the canon helps carry flavor via sexuality in such a MU* setting.
