@Miss-Demeanor Then on some level you must also miss our lack of turn signal usage.

Oh no, we still have that here. I'm convinced that nobody in Florida is aware that turn signals exist.

I force my children to bring headphones for their electronics. Not because I give any fucks about the people around me, but because -I- don't want to have to listen to the same goddamn 3 stanzas of a shitty game song or whatever fucking youtube video my youngest has decided he absolutely MUST WATCH RIGHT NAO OMG. So... to all those people who have sat near me and my kids? You're inadvertently welcome!

Also, I make my teenager return the cart now. Its good times.

I actually really like how in-depth your policies page is about what is not acceptable behavior. Its too easy to let something that seems small initially just 'slip by' because you don't want to ruffle someone's feathers over 'just this one thing'. But that one thing can be indicative of behavior that you don't want on your game. That one thing could be just the tip of the iceberg. But if everyone thinks 'oh its just that one little thing', all of a problem person's 'one little things' will never be noted and shown to be a symptom of a much larger issue. I like that you're looking to provide examples of the behavior you don't want to see so people will have a better chance of recognizing it for what it is and can say something about it.

Given that the staffing pool is already shallow, I don't think anyone is surprised.

And blind, rigid adherence helps this situation how?

      A. Not blind. Just because I choose to adhere to the rules doesn't mean I don't see the other side of it. I've just seen what happens when the pebble kicked down the hill starts a rockslide. I choose to avoid that altogether by saying 'no' to people have more than one character in a scene, whether NPC or PC, staff or player.

      B. Rigidly adhering to the rules sets a good precedent for other rules to be rigidly adhered to. Given how big a deal perception is in this hobby, I prefer to err on the side of caution rather than open myself to the endless bullshit of assholes wanting to get away with stupid shit.

      C. People are already staffing under the inability to have their PC in scenes that they're running. People are already playing under the inability to have their PC in scenes they're running. We're not losing anything by continuing to disallow it, and I seriously doubt we would be gaining enough by allowing it that would be worth the bullshit that would have to be dealt with.

I have a new diet I'm on to counteract the holiday weight I put on. So far its been working REALLY well. Three weeks and I dropped a pant size! If I can keep this up, I may just make this my normal lifestyle. Its not for the weak of will, however, since you cut out pretty much ALL starches, gluten-free or not. And sugars. Even most fruits are off the menu. Protein and good veggies and that's about it. On the up side, I get to eat all the uncured bacon I want!

    • RE: Hybrid cWoD/CoD Games (ie Changeling: The...Drost? Werewolf: The Forsacalypse?!)

@Wizz That was the thing about Pentex, though. To the world at large, they were simply yet another all-encompassing global conglomerate. They made your cars, your clothes, your diapers, your utensils... but a lot of it was done through subsidiary companies (Umbrella Corp's predecessor!). It wasn't a world of all things Pentex stamped on the label. They were being sneaky and underhanded about it. When it became the 'Captain Planet Villian' is when it became Werewolves fighting against Pentex. Largely because the Werewolves were the chosen protectors of the Wyld (Planeteers of Gaia, anyone?), and Pentex was Dr. Blight, Verminous Skumm, Duke Nukem, Hoggish Greedly, Zarm, Looten Plunder, and Sly Sludge (yes I'm that goddamn nerdy) all rolled into one, slowly trying to corrupt the world for the Wyrm. So yeah, your pack would run off to try and put a stop to Some Subsidiary LTD. that was dumping toxic runoff into the local water supply because it made the company more money (Hi Hoggish!). But then you maybe got a clue, that there was some further evil superpower behind Greedly Enterprises that was really running the show for some as-yet unknown reason. I mean the entire premise of pretty much anything cWoD can be summed up using 80s/90s cartoons and teen-oriented tv series. I could make a case for it being too 'X-Men', too 'Transformers', too 'Insert 80s/90s Cartoon Name Here' based off a broad glance at the theme. Its a game meant for teens and young adults that was concocted in the 90's, it draws the vast majority of its influence from the pop culture of the day. Its going to have very obvious similarities to the popular shows of the day that influenced its creation. All the cWoD splats have them. Even Mage of the day was basically Shadowrunner if everyone in the game was capable of using magic to enhance themselves and their surroundings. Changeling was very Fraggle Rock/Zelda: Adventures of Link/Gummi Bears/etc. Vampire was Beverly Hills 90210/Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel/etc. You can't really get away from it themewise in cWoD. Its a game of its time.

      Peeve:

A member of the household wants everyone in the house to try a new diet. Then expects ME to do all the research into recipes that will fall within the diet's parameters, AND the shopping for ingredients, AND the cooking with little to no input or aid from the person who initially wanted to be on the diet. When I wasn't working, fine, whatever, I have all day long to do this stuff. But I'm working. So apparently I should give up all of MY free time to ensure that everyone else can eat accordingly.

    • RE: Harassment in VR, there's something we can likely learn from this.

@Insomnia I get what you're saying, I really do... it sucks that there are some chicks out there claiming to be 'gamers' that are really just capitalizing on their "assets" instead of displaying any real gaming. But at the same time... that does not make it their fault that Random Guy decides that since This Chick is a bikini girl gamer, ALL girls are bikini girl gamers. That is Random Guy's fault for being a douche.

Simply put... the blame should always go to the harasser for being harassing, never to the prior harassed party (no, not even if they didn't stop it). Appropriate behavior is subjective and differs from person to person. What you might see as harassment, another might see as harmless flirtation and vice versa.

      EXAMPLE:
Jane is a stripper. She gets paid to take her clothes off. She smiles her way through a lot of terrible and demeaning comments each shift because it makes her more money. Even if she doesn't like it, she puts up with it because she wants that extra cash.

Sarah is a ballerina. She sometimes wears semi-revealing costumes for her job, but her dancing does not include her removing clothing. She receives applause and roses for a job well done.

Bob frequents both strip clubs and the ballet, since both allow him to watch scantily clad women dance around a stage. While Bob catcalls Jane and Jane puts up with it to get that extra ten dollars from Bob, it is NOT Jane's fault if Bob turns around and starts catcalling Sarah at the ballet. BOB is the one choosing to behave inappropriately, despite the fact that both women have a passingly similar job (ie. dancing in scanty/tight-fitting costumes for money).

    • RE: Social Conflict via Stats

I dislike comparing social 'combat' to physical combat. Even physical combat guidelines and rules are severely dumbed down to make things simple and straight-forward for everyone to deal with. There's plenty of nuance to physical combat, its just been ignored since day one because it would make combat too much of a pain in the ass to deal with. You absolutely could quantify and generalize social interactions, but people don't want to accept what might happen to their characters if you did. Because that would mean you actually could seduce someone away from their significant other, you could be shamed into doing favors for someone else. And people don't like it when they don't have full autonomy over their character. So you will never get that relatively easy ruleset until the players stop bitching about not being in complete control of their character's choices/actions/etc.

I've been on GW2 from day 1. Have a guild already, but I'm always happy to run about with people, help level up, anyone looking for map completion is welcome to ask questions, run fractals or dungeons... and I can hook people up with some awesome wvw folks for those that are interested. About the only area I haven't really delved into is pvp/spvp. 🙂

To this I say... if you cannot handle having your character's feelings determined by outside sources? NOT THE GAME SYSTEM FOR YOU. Its like the college kids claiming they can't handle a lecture on WWII because 'omg NAZIS' and need a safe space from the mean, hurtful facts of the past.

But I am notorious in still living in the 90s, when WoD would unapologetically fuck your shit up in every arena, then taunt you for not having brought a backup character sheet ready to go. God I miss the days when people would whine less about losing a character.... or even the autonomy of their character.

@Lisse24 I just think the social system is terrible as it stands. It was never meant to be used against PC's, or in a MU*, and there is no way in Hell that I am keeping track of every social interaction I have with every PC across weeks or months, trying to figure out if they've opened enough Doors to influence my character. I have better things to do with my time and quite frankly, tracking all that crap is like a job in and of itself. If I wanted to work where I play, I would volunteer to staff. Give me the one-and-done roll any day of the week, so I can know what's happening to my character and move on.

@Arkandel That's the honor system, and let me know when you've had a game of more than 10 people where the honor system actually worked. There's no checks and balances in your example, no way to ensure that people are actually posing according to the results of the roll.

@Arkandel Can't speak towards the other females on the board, but I tend to come off as a dude alot online because, well.. I was never really around a lot of women. I grew up surrounded by dudes, all my best friends were dudes, my favorite activities were all considered 'guy' things.. and since I smoked at least a pack a day for about 16 years, my voice is low enough that I can be mistaken for a guy over voice chat.

If you're worried about that I guess the outcome being shown isn't going to break the system, it's just a little extra.

But if we can't trust our fellow players then none of this really works. I don't want my IC social attempts to succeed if the other person hates it but is forced to go along, what's the point of that? How much fun is the scene going to be?

Bolded for emphasis. Your response suggests that any course of action where someone 'hates' the outcome should be avoided. But everyone can't win all the time. Sometimes, you just have to accept that something you don't like is happening to your character. But the system you outlined sets up the perfect opportunity for people to just pose whatever the Hell they feel like posing, free to ignore what the dice say because they're the only ones that will see the result. You've just enabled people to cheat. And as fun and fluffy as it is to talk about 'trusting other players', you have to be willing to take into account the lowest common denominator. In your system, there's no way to even catch someone cheating let alone call them out on it. You have no proof. No way to go 'Heeeeeeeey, I succeeded that roll, why are you posing like your character was completely unaffected?'. You're enabling the people that are untrustworthy while saying that we should just trust people to do the right thing.

Personal opinion incoming! Grain of salt recommended!

I feel like Hunter gets shafted in games. They aren't allowed to do their jobs 'because supers'. Yes, I understand that some Hunter players are douches and will chase after any super they find out about. But that's what staff intervention is for. And yes, some supers are douches that will hunt the Hunters because 'omg a Hunter!'. Again, staff intervention is made for this. Every Hunter sphere I've set foot in in the last... 5-6 years? They can't Hunt in the city they live in. They aren't allowed to touch PC's for ANY reason, even though the supers aren't likewise restricted... they're house-ruled and red-taped into a box of only being able to really baRP and socialize. Because anything else has to take place so far off-grid that the character will be noticeably gone for at least 12 hours... or you will suffer the wrath of the butthurt.

      Again, totally personal opinion. YMMV.
