my trick was to say under my breath what the shape/color was when it appeared

That is definitely the sort of thing I do, yeah. And patterns and rhymes and rhythms and associations and sometimes just repeating the word or list over and over in my head, though if something pulls me out of that and I didn't have something to rebuild it like a pattern I spotted/created then it's probably mostly gone.

ETA: using timers is literally one of the three reasons I have a smartwatch.

For a long time I had a watch with a dedicated timer button, and a row of marks across the top. 30 20 15 10 5 3 1. Every time you hit the button it went up one level, so if you wanted five minutes, just press the button three times. 15? Five times. And it was small and round and plain black and when I put a leather band on it it didn't even look like a digital at a glance. I really miss that watch. It was ridiculously useful to me through high school and college.

@Kanye-Qwest Now I kind of wonder if I do more of them than I even realise. I guess it's pretty likely I do. I don't think they had me do that particular test... I'd be interested to know if it'd turn up something like that but I'm not sure I'm quite interested enough to actually wish for a tedious attention game.

after about a minute I had devised a mental trick to let me remember the color/shape combinations so as to not miss many

Is this an ADD thing? I wasn't diagnosed until grad school, but I've always done this for all sorts of things and it never occurred to me until this moment that it might not just be 'normal'. >_>

    • RE: How to BeipMU: The best MU Client for Windows

4.00.283 is out and I'm barely even late in mentioning it!

      Changes:
Added 'Default Font/Foreground/Background' trigger appearance options (This one makes me happy; now you can just plain cancel colour changes you don't like that a game makes to something, and they'll always follow your default.)
Added Description field to aliases similar to triggers
Auto save configuration when closing a trigger/aliases/macros/worlds dialog box
Fixed a hang (will unhang after many seconds) in find if what you're looking for doesn't exist

I'm still glad I got convinced into trying it out.

Continuing my new tradition of belated mentionings, 4.00.282 is out. It brings us nested aliases (this can be useful in some advanced alias uses, and might still have its function adjusted slightly in future, so if you find it doesn't work as you expected it to please pass that on), and alt+# tab changing was enhanced so that control adds 10, so Alt+Ctrl+4 gets you to tab 14. Also bugfixes and all that jazz.

    • RE: Sexuality: IC and OOC

A thing I think is always important to keep in mind is that we don't generally notice characters being well-played by someone of a different gender (or race or etc.) unless the player happens to say they're a different gender etc. OOC. It's easy to mistake "most lesbian characters I was aware were played by guys RL were pretty bad" for "most lesbian characters played by guys RL are pretty bad", and easy from there for people to move on to "that lesbian character strikes me as pretty bad so is probably played by a guy".

@insomniac7809 said in Sexuality: IC and OOC:

@Aria and I both did some of our earliest online RP on a predominantly male space (the White Wolf hosted javachat games), and those were majority male, so the crossgender RP sterotype was a dude playing a lesbian in a leather body suit with tits out to here. (This was when you still got 'there are no women on the internet' jokes.) Then I went onto MU* gaming and the steriotype was a woman playing a waifish yaoi twink.

I think this may be more time period than venue. When I started on MU*s where it was relevant, also in 'men are men, women are men, children are FBI agents' days, the crossgender stereotype was dudes playing over-sexualised lesbians too (Lesbian Asian Schoolgirls, anyone?). A 5-10 years later is when the 'woman-played yaoi waif' stereotype* rose to equal prominence, IME.

...is it awful that one of the concepts that's been bouncing in my head for a while is an Acanthus Manic Pixie Nightmare Girl? Like, a free spirit who barges into people's lives, does her best to convince them to ignore things like 'oblgations' or 'property rights' until she gets it into her head to fuck off and leave them stranded three states from home with an empty bank account and a court date?

I have only the vaguest idea what an Acanthus is, but I'm still entirely in favour of this.

      * I've played a bunch of bi and gay dudes (and also played straight and asexual ones and women, but those characters aren't that relevant here) and at least one definitely hit 'waif' pretty well, so, y'know, I'll let someone else throw the first stone.

@Bob You're probably going to want to use regex here, but I'm not slick enough at that to sort out just what your pattern should be without spending more time and energy on it than I have right now, so I'm afraid that's as helpful as I'm going to be right now! 'help regex' should help most places though.

    • RE: How to BeipMU: The best MU Client for Windows

Belatedly mentioning there's been a new release, 4.00.281.

      Changes:
      Added ability to export/import triggers!
Added 'Input Window - Push to History' keyboard shortcut to explicitly just push to history, similar to Ctrl+Down [ The equivalent of SimpleMU*'s Esc functionality. This one's my fault. 😉 ]
Fixed glitch when copying triggers with regexes that can cause them not to hit in certain situations
Fixed a hang if you pause a window, select some of the 'New Content' banner, then switch to another window
Fixed a hang if the "New Content" marker goes beyond the window text limit then you switch to another window.
Fixed a bug with 'Invisible MUD Prompt Handling' that could lead to problems if text was selected and a prompt comes in

@MarsGrad It doesn't have a notepad, but if you have something in your input window and hit F1 it'll replace the linebreaks with %R and if you hit shift-F1 it'll replace tabs with %T, if that helps?

@kateywumpus Not automatically at present, but yes, you can move it over. Just click on the bar that says 'Input - public' and drag it over to the spawn window, then let go. It should pop right in -- I've just done it on mine to be certain.

      Multiple input windows.

I might finally have a simplemu alternative. Giving it a try, even if it feels weird after Simplemu for 20 years... if i can figure out the alternate to ctrl-P

Ooh, I know this one! It's ctrl-up, BUT, you can change it to ctrl-p in the keyboard shortcuts dialogue under Options. The one you want is 'History Window - Move selection up'. ctrl-down (or 'History Window - Move selection down') is the equivalent of ctrl-n, and when you're at the end of the history stack, also stores what you're writing to history like Esc in SimpleMU. There isn't an exact equivalent to the Esc functionality yet, but there may be soon. I have hopes.

    • RE: How to BeipMU: The best MU Client for Windows

So, there's a new release up with a bunch of new changes.

      • You can have a different look for your spawn panes than the main output window (like fixed-width main, wrapping spawns, which is what I was wanting).
      • You can have your world-buttons at the top instead of the bottom (although I kind of like them at the bottom, now, I think).
      • You can use %date% anywhere in your autolog names instead of only being able to append the date (though you can still do that).
      • You can make a non-prefixed new input window from the File menu rather than only the /command.
      • You can make a trigger where if you click on the text it matches, something happens (so, you could have 'X has arrived' send 'look X' when you click it, if anyone read descs anymore glare).
      • Puppet windows can get data by regex, so if one wants a spawn effect very close to SimpleMU's style, you can use that for it.
      • The 'new content' marker looks more stylish and is less in your face (but still visible).

...also various bugfixes, because what new release doesn't have various bugfixes, and some other things that I'm not remembering, but you could always check the changelog.

Next release is going to have importing and exporting triggers, so you can make something like @Tat's text formatting trigger and just export it and let people import it to use, for example. Probably other stuff too, but that one's in the current beta already.

If this client allows me to make completely separate windows for spawns that I can move around on my screen like Duck Client allows me to do, I'll be sold.

I don't think this got answered, but if I understand what you mean correctly (I haven't used Duck) then I just learned that yes, you can do this! If you hold down Ctrl while dragging a spawn, it will become its own little window.

@Derp I have been asked to pass this on: "It should run pretty nicely under wine, you can even set the UI font to something nice in the preferences dialog. There are Wine specific fixes and features in the code just to make Wine work nicer. And if anything is ugly or weird, I'll fix it. Wine needs more love :)"
