      Everyone I can think of that I personally know who takes issue with Whedon did so before the divorce and the article by his ex-wife. That whole thing just kind of confirmed beliefs, it wasn't the root of it.

      He's still got a new show coming out, though, so his career doesn't really seem to have been hurt.

      @Auspice said in Staff’s Job?:

      But I recall something I often ran into when I was considering a Magicians game:
      I had a few people come to me expressing an interest in Staffing. They really really wanted to Staff!

      And my first question was always: 'Will you ST? At least once a month? Staffing (approving apps, answering +jobs, etc.) is pretty easy on Ares. Unless the game gets really big, it can reasonably be done by a single person (as Faraday has proven). What I really need are STs.'

      Every single person, to the last, ducked out.

      What that told me was: they wanted to staff for the sake of staffing more than actively contributing to the needs of the game.

      It sounds more like it told you that people were volunteering for areas of staffing that you were not looking for. I am not an ST staffer when I staff, but I can and will do lots of other things.

      Someone not wanting to ST does not mean they were more interested in authority or whatever. It doesn't mean they don't want to actively contribute to the game. It means that they're not an ST.

      So in the US, you can say whatever you want around your colleagues, behave unprofessionally, prove yourself unsuitable for the job you were hired for and not get fired?

      This is sort of a benefit to at-will employment. Because in an at-will state, an employer could absolutely fire you for -phobic rants.

      People often worry about 'but what if I get fired for being LGBT and my boss is religious' and at-will does not apply where it'd be illegal (you can't be fired for your religion, sexuality, race, etc.).

      There are lots of states where it's still legal to discriminate based on sexuality and gender identity, FTR. They're not explicitly federally protected classes. Some states have made it explicit, though.

    • RE: Personal Agency for Personal Boundaries

      Someone mentioned earlier something along the lines of -- "games already have tools for this." But I'm pretty sure it was just in reference to a general culture of "it's okay to request a FTB or a general halt if stuff goes off the deep end and you're really uncomfortable," which I don't think counts as a tool. That's an overall policy. Making code for it would, IMO, count as a tool designed to help enact and engage with policy. It could only work in conjunction with continual effort to build the right game culture to support and complement the tool's usage.

      I’m really not worried about Velenosa’a lost income. Even if it weren’t being immediately replaced with the new duchy, it wouldn’t be a concern. Velenosa has had lots of work and investment over the years of just the sort @Sunny was suggesting.

      Ironically, the income issue might be more of an issue for smaller houses having their vassal elevated, idk.

      @Rinel Korra is definitely very different, and I feel like it almost suffers in comparison if you move to it right from the high of ATLA. Season 2 is definitely its rockiest point, though; 3 and 4 move into an upswing.

      @Tinuviel said in Model Policies?:

      @Pandora Heck, I'd say "If anyone asks you to take it off channel, don't argue about it."

      I'm cringing at the idea of most of you motherfuckers being authorized to tell anyone to shut up and that being enforced, real talk.

      That's why I advocate for a separate channel for such conversations.

      That's an idea. I don't know of many games that have or have needed such a thing, but I won't knock it. I don't know that advocating for a separate channel for innocuous conversations that might cause someone to feel argumentative really has a whole lot to do with 'short, clear, reasonable MUSH policies' though, again.

      I've been on a few games with Politics channels specifically, and some with Adult channels for general NSFWery. I thought I'd miss the outlet for political talk at first when I got to Arx, which generally just asks people to keep stuff that fraught and prone to causing arguments off channels entirely, but honestly it's been fine. I have plenty of other places to talk politics if I want to.

      @Kestrel Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett took turns writing a scene and emailed it back and forth, I believe I've read Pratchett saying. So not really all that different from writing long poses on a code that allows time delays, such as Ares' web interface.

      I actually believe they might have MAILED chapters back and forth. Gaiman's definitely written a bit about their process.

      So, at the beginning of Covid my brother had to move in with us because his IRL imploded. My big brain forgot (with all the chaos, them not being on site etc) to tell the landlord. Today she told us we have to be out in a month. Evicted.

      FML

      Along with what everyone else says, make sure you look up your state's laws about eviction. Often landlords will "evict" a tenant by just telling them they have until X date to get out but in a way that's not a legal eviction notice. Make sure you're getting the full required process for eviction. And check your lease.

      Are people really celebrating holidays EVERY SINGLE YEAR in-game though? Birthdays? Like, I guess if it's only happening once a RL year, cool, but on games that are 1:2 time or whatever - why? Why would you do that to yourself or be worried about missing an IC holiday or... why?

      I mean, I feel like @Seraphim73's post answered that: cause he enjoys holiday stuff and can feel inspired by holidays happening IRL. It's just a thing that some people enjoy and some people don't. (Which is pretty similar to RL: some people are just holiday people, some people aren't.)

      Been seeing a lot of hate for Masters of Universe on YouTube lately and frankly, I don't really get it. Like, people are losing their damn minds it. And it makes me wonder if the She-Ra remake got this kind vitriol.

      You mean the show that reduced the sexualization of its classic main character and introduced more diversity into the cast?

      Oh yes. It most definitely did.

      @Pacha said in Diversity Representation in MU*ing:

      @Ominous

      On the subject of roster games I know there have been problems in Arx, for example, of people taking non-white characters off the roster and just rewriting them as white. Though I believe staff there have cracked down on this a lot.

      I don't recall ever seeing a specifically non-cishet roster character on Arx. There are plenty of characters that specifically mention heterosexual stuff "He was always flirting with ladies" or so forth, but I can't remember ever seeing a roster character specifically written as LGBT.

      There are definitely LGBT rosters @saosmash has written. Jasher is explicitly gay, although I know that generally when she writes non-straight rosters she leaves it more "they definitely have same-sex attraction but whether that means gay or bi or pan is up to player interpretation." Lysander is like that, and I know there have been a couple others that now I can't remember off the top of my head. I also wrote Holden as a roster to have a deceased husband, and I leave where on the sexuality spectrum he falls to his players.

      EDIT: Oh I also remember Filshiar is written to indicate leaning ace/aro.

      I certainly hope they tie it into Lucifer.

      It doesn't seem likely, as they have their own Lucifer cast and everything. I haven't gotten around to watching the Lucifer show, but from the outside it often seemed like its connection to the original source material was fairly tenuous, whereas the Sandman show looks like it's planned to be a fairly faithful adaptation. It doesn't really seem like a setup ripe for crossover.
