RE: Open Sheets?
@mietze Yeah, I didn't really take issue with your posts before, because I can see all your points and find them reasonable. I think both sides can absolutely contribute to different atmospheres and enhance different types of games, and it's absolutely reasonable to talk about how that plays out in practice. (I was only objecting to the idea slipping out from some others of "there's no reason to ever want open sheets" vs "there's no reason to ever want private sheets" like there aren't pros for people to like about both of them.)

And to the "why would you want to know the story of a movie beforehand?" comments (which I can't find now) ...
@admiral said in Open Sheets?:
However, back on the topic of open sheets... why do you need to see my sheet? What do you gain from knowing so much that your character doesn't? Do you like to read wikipedia entries about a movie's plot before you go see it to prime yourself? Do you enjoy it when staffers who run scenes tell you all the backstory of what's going on up front? I'd assume not. You don't need to see every little detail about my character. Maybe I want to reveal my character's abilities, aptitudes, and motivations through my RP. Open sheets take that away entirely.

@roz Most posts have been clear on that front, so I must have missed any broad assertions that there's a 'one true way' from a wide array of posters.
No, I didn't say it was a wide array of posters, but I was expressing annoyance at this back and forth:
@magee101 said in Open Sheets?:
TBH even in a PVP game there is no reason there should be an OOC Masq. The only times it really matters is assholes who metagame, guess what, you're not going to stop them from metagaming even if you try and hide every piece of info.
@admiral said in Open Sheets?:
There's no reason for open sheets in any circumstance anyways, aside from staff-lite games that require players to police each other.
...because I think that general attitude is unhelpful. Yes, I do know that most of us are all accustomed to "Don't use OOC information IC" and that it can often be not a big a deal. I was just saying that there are different preferences, and that I don't think it's fair to say that a good player has to equal one who prefers open sheets because they'd never metagame. In a situation where IC information and secrecy is delicate, plenty of good players may still prefer not having the info OOC. And for some people that is a bit exhausting, as expressed here:
@insomniac7809 said in Open Sheets?:
I don't like having to keep what I IC know from what I OOC know separate beyond what I have to and I really don't like trying to second-guess whether my PC could have figured out what I already know to be the case OOC.
...which is a sentiment I also feel personally in my own play.
All I'm saying is that both of these perspectives -- people who prefer closed sheets vs open sheets -- have pros and cons and neither is inherently indicative of player or game quality.

RE: Open Sheets?
@magee101 There are lots of great players who still don't actually love the process of trying to second-guess whether it makes sense for them to have come to an IC conclusion they knew about OOC. Good players absolutely don't want to metagame, but they can also recognize that it can be hard to avoid doing it subconsciously and also exhausting the continually second-guess themselves. It's not as simple as "If your players are good they won't use that info." There are plenty of reasons why players who don't want to metagame would still prefer some information being kept hidden from them on certain types of games.

RE: Open Sheets?
Ugh, has this really already devolved into "There's no reason why anyone would want to do things other than the way I prefer"? Like. Really? No room for "different types of games have different needs" and "different types of players play in different ways"?

RE: RL things I love
When I was working in theatre in NYC, a certain successful and well-off performer (outside of his work, he came from money) kept, like -- forgetting to cash a check that was his fee for some concerts, or he lost the check and they sent him a new one and he still kept forgetting to deposit it, etc. We're talking thousands of dollars, if not over ten thousand. And he just -- FORGOT. No big. Barely a blip in his radar. (For the company, it was really important that he cash the damn check so that the books could balance in the right quarter.)
It's amazing how differently people can treat money.

RE: Open Sheets?
Yeah I answered based on the idea of Sacred Seed having a lot of political L&L stuff. I also don't have an answer for "games in general" because it really depends on the type of game.

RE: General Video Game Thread
Wasn't programming originally thought of as "women's work" way back in the day? And then that shifted when people realized the incredible power and potential of it, and so it became a "man's field" and that's why the rates of female programmers a couple decades ago were higher?

RE: Good or New Movies Review
Ant-Man and the Wasp totally a bunch of fun! Really enjoyed it. Some nice lighter fare from Marvel after the intensity of Infinity War.

RE: Why did you pick your username?
@ganymede said in Why did you pick your username?:
Ganymede is the identity Rosalind adopts when living in the Forest of Arden in As You Like It.
So basically you're my alt.
-
RE: Why did you pick your username?
Rosalind was my staff alt on X-Men Movieverse MOO. There was a Shakespeare naming theme and someone had already been Beatrice, the best of all Shakespeare heroines. So I became Roz!

RE: A new platform?
@bored said in A new platform?:
I think the 'the syntax has to be completely the same or the oldbies will rebel' is... exaggeration by the oldies for the sake of hating change (like most people do). Push come to shove, I do think people will play where they can play, so long as its achieving the functionality they desire.
100%. 1000%. Just offhand, I've seen multiple posts on here from folks who were like "Ugh I really didn't like the idea of XYZ in Ares, but then I got used to it and now I really love it." People just vastly overstate the difficulty of adapting to something new. Or, frankly, the idea that something modernized could actually be an improved experience.

Eric Aidan from X-Men MUCK
This is an oooooooold one, but I figured why not. Character was Eric Aidan from X-Men MUCK back before it switched codebases to become X-Men Movieverse MOO. Mutant with shark morph powers? This is like 2002. Mostly I was thinking about OLD LOGS and I remember having a lot of fun RP with him. (I played Kelsey!) I dunno! If you're around, or if someone happens to know them, it'd be cool to say hi.

@arkandel I've never understood the hate Last Action Hero gets. I've always loved it!

RE: Rosters: To PB or Not To PB?
@bananerz said in Rosters: To PB or Not To PB?:
Are you saying that having the PB means you own some type of copyright on the PB when you actually don't have the right to that image and/or likeness? That seems hypocritical.
That's a huge leap of hyperbole.

Briseis @ Arx
I am so super bummed that she rostered out of nowhere. Would like to at least know what happened, if I did anything, etc.

RE: Rosters: To PB or Not To PB?
@faraday said in Rosters: To PB or Not To PB?:
ETA: But that's just my personal philosophy. If you're going to allow a change of PB, I don't get why you wouldn't also allow a change of desc details like height/skin tone/etc. They go hand-in-hand in my mind.
Well if you change a PB, it should be someone visually similar, because it should be matching the same physical description of the character.
