@surreality I'm going to go ahead and keep making the assumption that if someone loudly and publicly indicates a lack of remorse for specific actions that they don't think the actions were wrong. I generally think it's a pretty safe assumption.

Honestly, I find your continued defense of purposefully bad behavior pretty baffling.

@Roz Well now you know. I didn't kill her, so 'Sticks and Stones', etc.

I find it telling that in a day and age where there's enough real hate out there that Trump is president of the U.S., people are having fits about terms like 'Kill yourself' and 'Drop dead' and 'Don't be a dick/cunt' that have been around for decades before they were even born. It's like people are thrashing about looking for something/anything to be angry about in an attempt to feel relevant while the world is burning. I can say whatever I want, and anyone can respond about it as angrily as they like, and then we all go about our daily lives without the exchange making a bit of difference to anyone. Useless, but we're going to do it anyway.

I'm not having a fit. I just think you're a pretty toxic person. It doesn't actually require that much emotional energy to come to that conclusion. Don't worry! I spend a lot more time thinking about Trump than you. Just because widespread hate, bigotry, and violence exists doesn't mean I don't pause when someone's acting like an asshole in my immediate vicinity.

@scar I don't think anybody -- including @Pandora -- is saying 'it's fine and dandy and totally cool to say shit like any of that to people'

By all means, please find a quote from Pandora that suggests that.

If someone feels absolutely no remorse about telling someone to kill themselves, I absolutely want to know it so that I can know exactly what kind of person they are.

I turned 30 two days ago.

Today I bought myself a bottle of Dom Perignon. And then I drank the whole thing myself.

      Now I'm eating ice cream.

      30 is great so far.

@Derp said in UX: It's time for The Talk:

Part of the user experience is recognizing that people are used to certain ways of doing things, and that these games are not isolated instances, but an entire class of game. @WTFE keeps frothing about good UX meaning that players need never worry about what comes with the game and what has been added to it, but as has been pointed out before, this is simply untrue. You absolutely need to know what comes with the game and what has been added to it because there is an almost 100% chance that the player of this game will eventually move to another game. (The +taxi thing is a perfect example of why users do need to know what comes with a game and what does not).

Why, though? Apart from "this player will go and play another game eventually," which I don't actually feel is a reason why this is apparently a 100% necessity? Like, I don't accept the baseline assumption here that because there are multiple games, they are required to have specific things in common.

I've staffed on a game that had a large amount of new players who were entirely new to MU*s, and @faraday is right: the help vs +help thing, the whole command structure, was a nightmare to try and explain. And you can't just tell people "oh one is hardcode and one is softcode," because that doesn't mean anything to them, either. And yeah, we had extensive intro/help documentation to combat this, but the fact is that the sort of fundamental baseline for MUSH functionality is super confusing.

For the record, even the +combat commands in FS3 can be simplified. I know because on X-Factor where I used to staff, we aliased simplified versions of them. (Such as adding an "attack" command to alias to +combat/attack and whatnot.) I think that @HelloProject's original post is totally correct. There's tons of coded stuff that we all have gotten used to being kind of unwieldy that could actually be super simplified and made easier.

I'm a bit confused about your point, because my entire argument is "make shit simpler" and "things could be simpler". What is there to disagree with? I'm not saying don't add new features, don't innovate or try new things. I'm saying that if you're gonna do it, don't make it a complete mess that needs 5 help files to explain how to use something.

You're presuming that people want it simpler. This is not always the case. People may want to simplify how things are done, but this doesn't necessarily mean keeping "things simple." As an example, people on Arx seem to want to add complexity to it.

People might want complexity in the system, but that doesn't actually mean people don't want the commands to interact with the system to be as simple and intuitive as possible. The difficulty of figuring out Arx's command syntax is a regular difficulty throughout the playerbase there.

If people can just buy a bunch of retainers to help with investigations if they can't/won't purchase their own investigate higher, doesn't that render obsolete the niche for high investigate pcs?

It does take a good bit of investment to actually build a retainer into a really good investigator. I've had my retainer for -- I dunno, five months? Ish? And I'm still in the process of building. And, for me at least, he doesn't at all remove my need to collaborate with other people on investigations: he's just additional investigation assistance. I've never thought "I don't need people's help because I have this retainer." Because one single investigation retainer? Is only going to help so much. It's still always better to get more than one person to help.

I don't have an investigative retainer, so this may not be accurate, but my understanding is that use of a retainer also takes up your weekly investigation slot. So, you can only toss one retainer at something, and you can't toss a retainer AND do your own, other investigation, at the same time. So multiple retainers wouldn't really help - if you want to get maximized results, you need to seek out other actual PCs (or their retainers) to help.

You can only run one investigation per week, but you could, say -- run an investigation on your PC and help a different investigation with your retainer. Or help two separate investigations (one on PC, one on retainer).

I am building my retainer into an investigation beast instead of my PC because it would be silly for my PC to be an investigation beast.

Anyways, I think there are surely problems to discuss, as there are problems on any game. Arx is not perfect. I mean, you can find me stating some pretty strong criticisms about certain systems on this forum. I've lodged concerns and talked out issues with staff personally. I don't necessarily feel the need to defend every criticism that's thrown Arx's way, because there will always be ones that I agree with. I just wanted to kind of address what I felt were inaccuracies so that the convo could happen as constructively as possible! Because I'm anal about shit. 😉 But I don't feel like your concerns are wildly unreasonable or that you're like THROWING DOWN or something.

@kitteh I don't deny that there's either an existing or seriously impending possible issue with XP bloat. I just think it's helpful to try and talk about things accurately. Which is why I also corrected things like saying that people are getting almost 200xp per week now, when the reality is that the top earners are getting in the 30s. It's a big difference. Like, I just think that if people want to talk about the actual problem, we want to be talking about the actual state of it. (No, people aren't getting 200xp a week, no, people aren't at the point of buying legendary skills as far as I can tell/estimate. The fact that some people might have the idea of saving for them is very different. You can be saving for something that's a year away, and it also means that meanwhile they're not spending their XP on other things.)

I have a PC who's been around since early December. He's at like 142% XP tax. That means it takes him literally 2 1/2 times as much XP to raise a skill than it does a newbie. He absolutely, totally has an advantage to someone super fresh to the grid, sure, because he's been around and I've had time to buy skills. But the XP tax is actually pretty expensive.
