I'm not sure where this goes but it's work adjacent..

With all the remote learning going on I'm making a LOT of videos. Some are teaching a skill and some are just showing how to use a tool to complete an assignment. I usually use screencast-o-matic to make these videos and then do the direct upload from there to youtube so I can share the link. The youtube account I upload to is my school domain (@publicschools.org).

The downside to using the upload from screencast-o-matic to youtube is that it makes my videos 'public'. This would be fine except...

Within 5 minutes of uploading a video some bot posts a link to pornography as a comment to the video.

Thank god my learning management system shows the videos in isolation within the sytem vs sending them to youtube but GOOD GOD. I don't need porn attached to my videos kthanks.

My admin need to stop asking me for my opinion and then being taken aback when I give it.

I have no fucks left to give and they should know this by now.

I'm gonna take the talk about 'professionalism' tomorrow as my just reward for being the only person on staff willing to give my opinion fully.

Excuse me as I sit here and call Bullshit on district announcements. You say thank-you, but we're stressed as fuck, and you aren't doing anything about it.

Colorado just added a requirement for teachers to have 45 hours of reading instruction to K-8. My anxiety spiked until I was told my reading specialist endorsement qualifies me to skip this.

I have never been more grateful for my master's degree.

    • RE: What do player-STs need?

I think the most important thing is to know exactly what is NOT allowed. Have a clear line of demarcation where anything past X is forbidden. I think you would have to draw several lines too, depending on the context. Magic? Combat? Beasties? Npcs? World Impact?

Whatever isn't allowed, let me know.

I took a leave from work last week to try to get a handle on my depression. I don't know if I made much progress, but we have a plan. Since being gone one of my students has been sent home for 4 weeks (because we can just to e-learning. Never mind that mom had to quit her job... it is stupid.)

I want to go back but now I'm stuck trying to get official doctor permission to come back. Everyone is so packed that I'm haven't to do all of it via email.

      Not helping the depression much.

I broke down on my boss Tuesday and she sent me home for the rest of the week. Now staring at fmla paperwork trying to decide if the extra time off will be worth the stress of missing a paycheck. It all depends on the outpatient treatment I may or may not be able to access. If I can't then I might as well go back. It can't be worse than sitting at home feeling like I'm completely beyond any ability to help.

It literally isn't safe. There is no precaution i could take with seven year olds to make it safe. I have 25 kids in the smallest classroom in my building.

It is security theater and nothing more.

    • RE: The Work Thread

I've always defined myself and my success by my job. Before I got a job it was school. I've always put my entire soul into what I did - even when I was a teenager coaching movie theaters.

But this year? I'm failing. I'm failing hard core. I'm stuck in a cycle of self-loathing that is fed and reinforced when I do something I know isn't best practice simply because of COVID. Then when I ignore the rules and do what I know is best I have the guilt of knowing I broke the rules.

I'm tearing myself up from the inside. I literally have nothing left to give but I still have 24 kids who need me to show up and be myself.

      I've never hated myself more.

I'm so tired of fighting a system that isn't helping our highest needs kids.

It's not just my school - I've yet to be in a public education building where there were adequate supports for the babies who aren't classified in all areas as 'normal'. I'm convinced this kind of school simply don't exist.

Instead I'm putting in the time to do research. I'm putting in the effort to innovate. Then when I ask for support... I don't get what I actually need.

The last time I had Indian food I got violently ill after - and it wasn't the food because my husband ate most of my plate when it was too spicy for me.

So it has been a few years.

But I woke up ready to try again and we did. So far so good and thus I'm feeling hopeful!

(The food was amazing tasing both times.)

Ngl. Since pre-arx my Mu experience was Ansible and the 4 pern games avaliable at the time (NorCon, Harper's Tale, Pern World, and whatever the last one was), the hobby seems pretty large to me. Large enough I CAN'T play all the games.

Our middle school and elementary school are in two different buildings, and with Covid nonsense this year it's REALLY difficult to connect with those teachers.

But occasionally I meet up with one and I ask how things are going.

They're going poorly for them. And yet the message is that "people" have it figured out and are doing good.

They are not. None of us are doing this well. I wish they'd cut the rainbows and sunshine bullshit and just commiserate with us that this shit sucks. I'd respect some of my admin team if they'd do that.
