does that mean PC is off the table?

FF7 was a Playstation exclusive; so too is the remake. I gather there are various reasons for this.

I suspect one is "Sony wrote us a large check, possibly in vengeance for Microsoft having done the same to get us to make Rise of the Tomb Raider a time-limited Xbox exclusive some years back."

      vengeance

@Lisse24 - The books are equally good; there's only one left (the ninth book) and then the series is done, and I have very mixed feelings about that. It will be nice to see the last remaining plot threads pulled together, but it will also be sad to know there's no more Expanse books coming.

The first book (and first season of the show) is based off of online RP.

If we're really getting into classical crossover fanfic, though, we have to talk about Jason and the Argonauts.

"Every culture hero from the Greek city-states team up and have an adventure."

Now I just imagine the classical version of AO3, but instead of leaving comments people cluster around the Jason fanfic author to shout that the author is clearly getting this characterization wrong, because Hercules is totally not with Hylas and wouldn't leave the quest for him, because Hercules/Iolaus OTP, no Hercules/Megara OTP, are you kidding that relationship was so unhealthy, etc. And then one person starts screaming "UPDATE PLS!"

@RDC - I do quite enjoy the Heartstriker books and the DFZ setting, at least as reading material.

(To be fair, I basically just love anything Rachel Aaron writes: the Eli Monpress fantasy epic, the Paradox SF trilogy, the Heartstriker/DFZ semi-post-apocalyptic urban fantasy, the Forever Fantasy Online LitRPG books... she hasn't really misfired yet in the stuff I've read.)

A lot of Great Literary Classics are basically fanfiction. I mean, the Divine Comedy is self-insert fanfic, of all things.

You could make an argument that Virgil's Aeneid is crossover fanfic of Homer's Illiad, too, inasmuch as it takes an otherwise minor character from Homer's work, writes a big heroic story around him that basically starts right at the end of the previous "canon" work, and then retcons him into the backstory of another franchise (by making him Romulus and Remus' ancestor) in order to justify a preferred headcanon (or, in this case, to tie together a bunch of historical events and justify the legitimacy of the Julio-Claudian dynasty).

Yes, I'm simplifying that, but the analogy isn't really inaccurate.

You're half-right. I think it'd be more like Fading Suns crossed with Event Horizon.

Some games I've been on (usually those run by @Tat) have a really neat concept of a what if/AU week the week of April 1st. During that week you can roleplay all kinds of wacky non-canon stuff, and there's usually one overarching AU premise that lots of people will participate in for their random non-canon accents. For instance, on the Mass Effect game, there was an AU one year of "what about these characters... but adapted for Dragon Age?" So biotics as mages, etc. And then the AU week is done and everyone goes back to normal RP.

I think that can be a lot of fun.

(As for fanfic, I honestly don't think it's that harmful. If the canon content isn't arriving fast enough, I will read it. Sometimes I will write it. And if I ever publish one of my various fictional worlds publicly, I don't care if others come and play in it. Please don't show me your playtime, for a whole slew of reasons—I've had two published friends have really disturbing fanfics of their characters sent directly to them—but definitely go have fun writing it.)

@Cobaltasaurus — I think it depends on the game. Smash Brothers? Mario Party? Breath of the Wild? Those I like to have on the TV. Some, like Mario Kart, I can happily play either way if I'm playing solo; local multiplayer needs the TV. But for certain other games, I genuinely prefer the handheld experience: Octopath Traveler, Pokken Tournament DX, Kirby All-Stars (no, I don't know why I prefer handheld to TV for this one), Sonic, Little Dragons Cafe, and so on.

      What shitstorm around pokemon?

As somebody who hasn't played it since...2nd Gen? I'm pretty 'who cares' about the whole "you can't get all 900+ pokemon!"

I'm still going to get it, because it's a Pokêmon game, but I'm a bit peeved. It's not about not being able to get all 5 billion pokémen. It's about not being certain if I'll be able to have my favorite pokęmons on my team. Because at the end of the day, having a fun lineup is what's best about Pokəmon.

Yeah, I will be sad if I can't bring my favorite Kyogre along for the ride. Or the one particular Arceus I've had for what seems like forever. Or a couple of others, like my starter buddies from past games. Or various other mythical I've caught. But I do recognize that they're redoing all the models and animations for higher-fidelity—after all, Pokémon Go and Pokémon Let's Go! both are using the 3DS-era models and animations, which are okay, but not really meant for the high-resolution interfaces they're now being used for. And redoing every single Pokémon in the National Pokedex is not a small task. I can totally understand why they didn't do every single one for this first game. They've strongly suggested that the next game in this generation will have more of the National Dex.

And I know (from what's been shown in trailers) that I'll be able to transfer in my favorite Wishiwashi, my favorite Snorlax, and—most importantly—my beloved Arcanine, Wulf, who's been dragged along through pretty much every Pokémon game I've ever played.

So I shall be content, even if it turns out I have to let poor Kyogre, and Arceus, and the Four Swords of Justice, and Solgaleo, and all the other various favorites who would otherwise come along to play stay in the Pokémon Bank vault and sit this particular game out.

      Include a kickstand?

Recent history says you'll be lucky if they include an AC adapter to charge this thing.

Bonus points if they don't tell you any other AC adapter but theirs will brick the unit.

FWIW, it's only the Switch Dock that uses non-standard USB-C charging, because it has wonky power requirements that fall outside the USB-C Power Delivery spec; a USB-C power supply that doesn't speak Nintendo's extensions to the power delivery spec can fry the Dock. The Dock should be used only with an actual Nintendo USB-C power adapter because of that. (And there is a warning about that in the dock's box.)

The Switch itself? That'll work fine with anything that supports the standard USB-C Power Delivery spec. Modern Apple and Chromebook USB-C chargers, for instance. I just bring one USB-C power brick with me when I travel; I use it for the laptop most of the time, then plug the Switch in when I need it.

Nintendo just announced a new version of the Switch that is only for on-the-go; slightly smaller, no docking or removable joy-cons, about 25% less expensive, etc.

Dang, the new Warframe cinematic, from this year's TennoCon... maybe it's time to patch up and go be flippy parkour space ninja robot(-y thing, sort of) again. The lore is good (and often tragic), the gameplay is good, and it's been long enough since I dusted off Nova, Mag, Titania Prime, Trinity Prime, Octavia, and the others that I'm not burned out on the grind right now...

And that new gameplay reveal. And the implications, lore-wise, of "It's time to grow up, Tenno." And...

      • Spire: Oh my god, read Spire; this needs to be less fringe

I've never heard of this one, but 'elven urban rebellion' sounds pretty neat.

I miss having a tabletop game in which I'm a player, sometimes, as opposed to the GM.

But on that note, as a GM: what does Foundry do differently than Roll20 that makes it more slick? Can I define sheets and dice mechanics like I can in Roll20, in case the game isn't already supported?

@Atomic - oh, I love Atomic Robo. Both the RPG and the comic on which it's based. The best part was that the one time I played the RPG so far, I got to play a version of myself that's actually canon!

(I am actually, very briefly, a character in the comic in the FCBD 2016 issue as a Tesladyne action scientist who gets eaten by vampires on the same page she first appears on! And then as a name on the memorial Robo puts up outside Tesladyne for those who fell stopping the invasion. All the folks in the cafeteria, the response team, and the memorial are various fans they wrote in.)

I injured my foot at the beginning of May. It is now July. And while I can put weight on it again just fine, it still hurts. Tonight, it hurts badly enough that I cannot sleep.

      This is irritating me.

This is also why I'm posting at 3:30am.
