@Cupcake Netflix has it. Not streaming, but they do have it on DVD. I think the NBC/ABC (whichever network it was on) site might still have it streaming as well. I know they did for a long while, though the last time I looked for it was a few months ago when I wanted to show it to someone.

He said it reminded him a lot of the way some anime uses inspiration from Western myths/religious themes to create something borderline sci-fi/fantasy from hearing a bit about it and then seeing the first few episodes, and he's kinda on to something there, I think.

@Cupcake I would really love to see a game with a setting similar to Kings. I just don't know if this specific project(s since two are technically being discussed, I think?) is where I'd want to see it happen.

Mostly, it feels like it would want to be its own thing.

I have to agree with @Catsmeow here.

I would avoid an alternate timeline for modern or future or space, as interesting as those ideas are.

Maybe nudge it around to another past timeline, like the 1500s for the Renaissance or something more Musketeers era rather than going medieval, since the feel would be similar in some respects, but I don't think I'd push it further than that timeline-wise.

You could potentially do something interesting on the 'conflict' front and set it a few years before the era of the French Revolution from an alt-history approach, with the notion of the angelic bloodlines having faded a touch, which would make the nobility somewhat more insular and guarded (circling the wagons, so to speak) while more of the region's residents have very little angelic blood if any and are starting to rise in power on their own.

That, I would think, would be a more engaging spin on a different timeline without losing the 'fantasy history' vibe that I think a lot of folks enjoy about the core setting that modern/space/future would kinda smash to bits.

A modern take, or something along the lines of a 19th century take, might be really cool. My first thought re: modern was something along the line of a tv show called "Kings" that came out some years ago.

OMG I thought I was the only person who ever saw that show. LOVED it. It would make a very neat game setting.

Sadly, I think it ended up dying due to being in that weird zone between 'is a retake on religious stories, so non-religious folk or people averse to such avoided it, but was not zealously rah rah rah religion yay find your way to Jesus' enough for the religious crowd. Which is sigh-worthy, because it was really interesting and quite good. A few shows seem to have fallen into that particular niche once in a while and rarely do they seem to survive. There was another called 'Miracles' wayyyyyyy back when that encountered a similar fate (though it was more akin to a religious take on X-Files, on the whole).

@Monogram I remember seeing those desks in the store! They're super pretty really. We really liked them and would have nabbed that kind, actually, but I needed a bigger/gigantic L for the project space. We almost caved on doing two of those with a table between in spite of that. They're seriously nice desks.

OK, so, I should actually hate this but it's too funny to not share and too funny for me to not love it just a little bit.

Apparently, the blazing ZOMGWTF illness was kicked off by deathstar gallstone from hell, which blocked everything off and started making my other organs get infected and blah blah blah.

When they finally got it out, the resident that was chattier and more friendly with us, who was there for the surgery, said part of the problem removing it was that it was 'a really weird sort of shape, about an inch in size, but more geometric, "sort of like those fancy gamer dice" (his words)'.

I am such a goddamned geek I apparently tried to grow my own D10. Now that I'm officially not dead hurray, I cannot NOT find this funny as hell on some level. (And quietly hope Chessex doesn't try to sue me or something.)

While they would not let me keep it to turn it into a pendant with 'my own personal doomsday asteroid, you missed motherfucker' etched into its setting (because I fucking would have), they will apparently eventually send pictures, which I'm kinda looking forward to despite the gross factor, because dammit I really gotta see this now.

@saosmash Goddamn, that's one hell of a THAT DAY. 😕 Having had a share of those lately, all the empathy. If I could offer a cup of really good coffee to take the edge off or something, I would.

@Ominous Their wiki wasn't bad in terms of the info they had available -- it was pretty good on that front -- but the organization of that info could have been one heck of a lot better, to be sure.

I'm working on building a desk, that's in literally 30 pieces which will then be put towards the PC we're starting to build(a Corsair Obsidian series tower, I'm told is very pretty).

This, this, this. While it's not traditional advice, I really cannot overstate the value in doing things with your hands, especially things with visible progress of some kind.

It is more help than you will ever imagine it could be. It could be painting miniatures or woodwork or knitting or whatever else, really. The end result being a useful object isn't always necessary, even if it is a great cherry on top sometimes. The doing and the progress, though, that's weirdly 'big'.

I have a very absurdly L&L-ish Vector-based wiki layout thing I'm kicking around for a project, if you're using mediawiki (I would have no idea how to convert it to wikidot) and like the general vibe of it, I can try to work up a variation on it if you want. Project isn't public yet so I can't just link it, but I can toss you a link in PM this coming week (when some of the more demonstrative elements are in/up/etc.) after I get the brain back on track.

@ThatGuyThere I know, right?! I couldn't not chokesnort. Which one should not do in front of nice medical personnel who are already worrying over every possible noise your person is making at every hour of the day, but I could just... not not chokesnort.

This one exists at the weird intersection between games and RL, but it feels like it belongs here most.

That moment you realize some actual person in your immediate surroundings is so <game system archetype/cliche> you have to try not to giggle a moment because you know you'd never be able to explain.

In this vein, I'd like to apologize to the universe for the half-sneeze, half-gasp noise I made upon realing that the good-looking young fashionable/slightly edgy twenty-something doc has a WoD name that is such a WoD name my brain immediately went: "you really are just one peeking tribal tattoo away from being the kinfolk doctor in every 90s game ever, aren't you?" because that sound was in no way dignified.

I agree with some general premises I extract from the quote: "don't specialize yourself into such a corner you can do nothing else", "people should be encouraged to know how to handle a variety of life skill basics broadly to at least some extent", and "don't hesitate to learn something just because its outside your area of focus," -- all of which I think are useful concepts that people sometimes struggle with.

Beyond that, any relatively arbitrary list is still precisely that -- arbitrary-- and we need specialists in the world, period.

I tend to take this view: Don't hyperspecialize to the extent that there's no room in your brain for how to prepare yourself some kind of basic meal/know how to apply basic hygiene/etc. because it is very unlikely that hyperspecialized understanding of popular clam preparation methods from the 1890s is going to be in such high demand that you can hire a full time cook/asswiper in modern society.

In gamer terms, 'be careful about min/maxing your life to extremes.'

Which is pretty much the useful version of 'if you can't pull off my arbitrary human swiss army knife list, you are less than human', which is not so useful.

Also: OMG home tomorrow night probably. Well, not home home until thurs night/fri, but omg out of HERE.

Still not dead, but got bumped today. Hopefully tomorrow. If not tomorrow, within two weeks but with a more reliable schedule, since the infections are down enough it's no longer OMGWTFBBQ THIS OSHINKO ROLL LOOKIN' BITCH GONNA DIE after days of iv antibiotics and the first round of surgery.

Much ❤ to peeps. Really do eat a thing you love with an extra eye toward appreciating that you may wind up not being able to do that at any minute. (Also, somebody have a clove out there for me plz? <3)

Still in one piece. I'll try to post something longer whenever I'm home, since I am still made of suck on the finger typing, but surgery #2 is highly likely today, though not 100% certain, since it's an add on to the schedule. They shouldn't need a #3, or so everyone hopes.

Really keep your fingers crossed, y'all, 'cause we did apparently luck out in that the regional Luke Skywalker best suited to take out this particular deathstar was available today and today only, hence moving it up to now at all instead of it being a week or two out.

@Derp That sounds a lot like the area where 7D will eventually live. 😄 very much awesome, but yeeeeeah that's a big trade off. The folks I would stay with in the area it was based on did similar, same reasons, though they were on one of the more 'town' streets.

@Catsmeow This. After having seen the way that word makes the little veins on my husband's forehead do the cha-cha, I totally correct the shit out of people.

When it's some asshat hitting on me RL, I will shamelessly be that bitch who is all, "Oh, that's lovely, my husband is a massage therapist, too!" -- which would be much more passive aggressive than I ever try to be if I made any attempt whatsoever to hide the disgust in my tone, and that shit gets dialed up to 11 instead.

@TNP I can't finger type too well from phone, but was more neon yellow, yup. Sadly, instead of it being a long awaited callback from that old oompa-loompa audition or an actual invite to a magical chocolate factory (unless the dirt counts), secretly, my gall bladder has apparently been attempting to construct the death star.

I cannot say if this has anything to do with Trump, but I am pretty sure the measure of bile over the course of the past year going all crazy toxic society-wise wasn't helping! So it came up with the ingenious scheme to cook up the death star in house, and it just kept on like a busy little bee until it realized, "Shit, boss, maybe I shoulda checked to see if there was clearance to get my megaweapon out into the world before I done built it so big." (Picture someone having built, say, a turbojet in their barn, started the thing, and only then stepped back to watch in horror as it gets briefly stuck in the doors while the jets continue to fire, blasting the ever-lovin'-shit out of, presumably, the rickety old farmhouse reserved for every mad farm scientist ever in a feel good action flick and this analogy, which is somewhat unfortunate because the rickety old farmhouse is, essentially, 'the rest of me'.)

I need tell no one, I am now sure, that there is no small amount of medication going on here.

P.S. Please please please DO NOT send me a new kitchen or magic chair or an oven not tainted by the dire hand of the gluten. Do go eat something you really enjoy today and spoil yourself a little, though, because solid food is way off in the future around here.
