And another question I have:
Would you make your limiter "Mutants Only" or "X-men Sphere Only"?
Open things to non-mutants that have been members of the X-men (like Deadpool, Hepzibah, etc) and restrict non-X-men related mutants like Justice and Squirrel Girl?None of those are allowed. Ew.

My problem with no alts is that you're probably killing a game before it even gets started. When I opened my DC game I put a hold on alts and I literally had people tell me they'd be back when I open up my alt policy, that they weren't investing time in just one character. Just my experience.
I honestly can't get over this.
"Alts aren't open right now, but they will be later"
"WHAT THE FUCK YOU EXPECT ME TO PLAY ONLY ONE CHARACTER FOR NOW?"
"Uh...yeah..?"
"BYE!"I can totally understand wanting an alt down the road.
You should not get multiple characters right off the bat.
Like...not even on a WoD game. You're just wasting app-staff's time, there.

RE: X-Men Game
There'd have to be some kind of 'tier' system or something. I don't know how it'd work other than eyeballing it, but like...
You can't let somebody take a 'highly sought after' character as an alt, IMO.
Like if you play Emma, your alt needs to be like...Mercury or Magma or something. ETA : I also think there'd need to be proven activity before giving an alt. Like goddamn, if you want an alt you can fucking prove you're going to play the character you already have.
Anyways. I'm totally okay with Marvel heroic as a 'reference' thing. IE you can do +sheet so and so and see their numbers and stuff for comparison. Not a fan of actually rolling stuff.

RE: X-Men Game
The problem is...
Okay. I app Illyana and Psylocke. Neither are 'starring cast members'. One's a ninja, one's a demonwitch. My friend apps Emma Frost and X-23. Okay, she got one starring cast member. One's a telepath/leader, the other's a melee murderbot.
Between the two of us, we just assfucked the number of "cool" available female FCs.

RE: X-Men Game
My only real "problem" with year 1 games, is almost literally everybody winds up being 18-25. (With an emphasis on the 18-21.)
I like the idea of a like...."handwaved" year one? Like Cyclops and Jean are 30 and Xavier's and the X-men have been around, but idk, they were just doing "vague x-men shit" in the background and none of it was very serious until OMG NOW ALL THIS STUFF IS HAPPENING.
That way you get the 'teenage' mutants/etc and...Jean/Scott/Storm/etc aren't like 21.
IDK, maybe that only bugs me.

RE: X-Men Game
@zombiegenesis We had a rather thorough discussion about this in the first portion of the 'Super hero poll Gut Check' thread or wtfever it's titled. A few people seemed to really like the Utopia idea, some liked the general 'Xavier's in Westchester' type thing.
I have no idea what FASERIP is. I remember not really minding the Marvel Superhero RPG sheets or whatever that Marvel Reborn had once upon a time. But, that's a lot more code/data entry work for staff. And I'm pretty sure there's tons of X-characters who won't have stats already done, so staff would have to wing most of it, I'd think.
My concern with even opening the door a crack to non-X themes is that once you start, it's almost inevitable that you'll eventually open the door all the way. And people will push for it non-stop.

RE: X-Men Game
Personally, I'd want to see a more narrowly focused setting/theme. I think there needs to be specific "this is how life is" and "these are the current threats we face" and stuff like that. Less "okay you got Emma Frost, go do some slice of life shit until somebody runs a random plot".
ETA : Staff would also probably need to pick specific iterations of certain characters.
No, you don't have to play the character the EXACT SAME as in the comics, but no "this is alt verse cyclops and he's 19".
"Cyclops is in his 30s and the experienced leader of the X-men and blahblah. You have some leeway with his personality and can make your own decisions moving forward, but that's the general idea of Scott we expect to see."

RE: X-Men Game
I'm all for X-theme characters only, tbh. I think it'd be the best way to do it.
Once you start allowing non-Mutants, almost all the air goes out of the "life as a mutant is hard" bag, which I think would be pretty vital to the atmosphere of an X-Men game.
Once you crack the door to whatever, it's just a matter of time before the game is just another sandbox of every theme ever, with no real cohesive story.

RE: X-Men Game
SOMEBODY take this guy up on his offer.
I'm personally not a huge fan of the 'Utopia' idea some people seemed to want, because I think you lose the X-Men vs Brotherhood dynamic (both the actual fighting and just the inter-social conflict/trying to sway each other, etc, and them occasionally being forced to work together, etc), which is a huge chunk of what'd make it interesting, IMO.
I'd still totally play in the Utopia setting anyways, tho.
I'm not Comic-savvy enough to jump in and offer to write all the theme shit or anything like that, but admin shit I could do if somebody wanted. I've written policy, rules, etc before and I'd like to think of myself as one of the more rational 'job monkeys'. IDC about doing 10 apps a day and handling all the idiots on the guest channel, etc. (Yes, you're all idiots. Deal with it. Cough. I promise I'm nicer on game.) And I will push you other lazy staffers to get bigger shit done. To the point that you will hate me.
I think the first initial step is.
Utopia, or usual Westchester/NY setting, and after that, fuck it, it's a boulder rolling downhill as long as the simple code shit gets done.
My vote is usual Xavier's vs Brotherhood thing, because I think it provides a lot more self-sustaining RP if the Brotherhood actually gets some active members. But, again, I can live with either.

RE: FCs on Comic MUs
I don't think that X-Men game is actually a thing anybody is making. @Ghost and @The-Tree-of-Woe are horrible monsters who hate us.

RE: FCs on Comic MUs
The players aren't ever going to change. They'll be the same everywhere. You can limit their damage to a game by limiting alts to 1, though. Maybe have requirements for earning a second character.
I still say that in the grand scheme of things, it can't be that hard to set up. Comic games don't really need much code. Bboard, +finger, and a +sheet/traits thing. Maybe a +roster/+pc's thing. There's no stats/dice/etc like a WoD game.
Somebody do it, make a copy, and give it out to people. Plzkthx.
(I can barely plug my wireless kb/m into my laptop without ending the world, I wouldn't even know where to start with code/etc, sorry.)

RE: FCs on Comic MUs
Am I missing a hero game somewhere, or are there really only 3 currently? Comux, 1963, and UH?
No offense to anybody at Comux, but the game just smells like death. 1963 just eludes me, I'm not sure why, the year just makes me go meh. And well, we've covered UH plenty elsewhere.

RE: FCs on Comic MUs
@ghost said in FCs on Comic MUs:
I've chimed off on this before (re: FC sexuality), but I don't think the concern is so much on the sexuality of the character. I think it has more to do with how the character will behave under the control of the player.
I have no issues with a female Captain America or even a gay Captain America (there might be a compelling story to tell in Steve Rogers arriving in the modern age and realizing that he can be gay in 2017 with a certain amount of respect that wasn't prevalent in 1941).
I like to think that players would approach those gender/sexuality issues as a means of compelling story.
HOW and EVER...
I think the real concern people have is in a Captain America transported to 2017 as FUCK EVERYTHING THAT MOVES BONDAGE SEX SWING NEVER INVOLVES IN ANY STORY AND SENDS EVERYONE DICK PICS Captain America, thus really putting aside any meaningful role playing with the character concept in favor of using the character as a sandbox Shang Alt.
We'd seen mentions recently of gay fish Daken uncomfortably hitting on people IC and OOC, and mentions of Sex Magic Sorcerer Supreme Dr Strange.
So, in summary, I think the concern is less on gender/sexuality of the FC and more on whether or not they'll be used like a Harvey Weinstein extension of the player's whims, thus becoming more of a distraction than a contribution.
Pretty much all of this. Except I will say I'm not really okay with gender-swapping FCs. Making Captain America a woman is an entirely different beast (on an entirely different planet) than making Cap gay or bi.
As for sexuality, though, the thing is, if I'm not involved, I really shouldn't have any reason to know your Captain America is gay.
Yeah, there's lot of 'interpretations of characters' and stuff, but....IDK, I'm pretty sure I've never seen "super flirty and promiscuous Captain America who is totally open about sexuality".
The other thing is it's very common for people on Hero games to shack up with one person, which again, both makes it obvious and odds are you're not living up to your 'responsibilities' as a high profile FC.
It's not hard to play "gay Psylocke" or something and have it fly mostly under the radar if you have any fucking concept of discretion. But if you're taking trips to Lady Mastermind's Lesbian BDSM Mansion in England and staying there for months IC with other female PCs, and actually broadcasting the fact...uh...yeah, you might get people talking shit about you. (Details here are off, it's been a while, but that's vaguely based on a true story.)
tl;dr Nobody (except dumbasses) cares if you play a 'good' Wolverine/whatever who just happens to be gay, while staying active in your sphere/etc. When "I am playing gay so-and-so" becomes the focal point of what YOU as a player are doing, rather than just "I am playing so-and-so", is the problem.
ETA : This is just a general huge personal peeve for me. People have no concept of 'time and place' for when to do this stuff, and/or they are so desperate for attention, they'll put this stuff in the forefront when it has no real purpose. (Cough. Crossing to WoD for a second. Dragging ghouls to Elysium or into COURT on a leash and having them call you 'Daddy' in public scenes.)
Like goddamn, even if Dr. Strange and Rogue were doing SEX MAGIC shit.
WHY THE FUCK DOES LITERALLY ANYBODY ELSE ON THE GAME KNOW ABOUT IT?
There's a big difference between stuff like "oh that Spider-Woman is dating Psylocke" and "that Spider-Woman and Psylocke constantly make every scene about their relationship and talk casually about BDSM shit ICly and on channels and have invited 27 different other female PCs to BDSM Land with almost no cause".

RE: FCs on Comic MUs
Yeah, idk, I've staffed multiple comic MUs and played lots of characters and I have literally never in my life owned a 'single issue' of a comic or been to an actual comic store (or if I went, it was to buy MTG cards cough). I've read a handful of the 'big book' things that get put out to like Borders/Barnes & Noble/etc where they have like "half of an entire series run in one book". New Avengers, some X-Men, some Cable & Deadpool, and some Batman, and that's about it.
Comicvine, etc, are great resources. I've apped tons of characters off of mostly just reading about them there.
There is definitely room on these games for people who aren't comic know-it-alls, even as FCs. Yeah, there's a dick or two around who'll go "omg don't you know what happened to your character in XYZ Series!!? How are you even playing them!!!" Ignore them.
RP quality and storytelling effort matter infinitely more than "how many Batman comics have you read?"

I want to play in stuff like Final Fantasy, or Super Robot settings but....
Without 90% of the people those kind of games tend to attract.
Man, sometimes I hate you because you say the things I'm thinking of all the damn time.

This was tried a few years ago by the M3-circuit. It lasted about 4 months and then collapsed under the sheer insanity of its own players and setting.
