RE: Which canon property/setting would be good for a MU* ?
@dariryu I'd just ignore Admiral. His apparent burning need to have systems to beat other players with should say all you need to know.
@Lithium Of all the settings there are, I have to say, I really don't get what it is about Final Fantasy of all things that makes you think it particularly shouldn't be consent based. "Gritty, hardcore player vs player mechanical combat with consequences" isn't really what comes to mind when I think "Final Fantasy MUSH". I mean, we've all seen FF and Disney in the same universe.
On another note, somebody give me something besides a trainwreck multiverse-trashcan type game where I can play Agrias, and I'll be your BFF.

RE: Make MSB great again!
Well I mean, if an ad is from a year ago and there's no active discussion....what do you expect?
If I open a year old newspaper, I'm not going to expect the coupons to still be good.
ETA : Personally, I'd still really really really prefer it not be permitted to post ads for things that aren't open yet. If you want to 'discuss ideas related to your game idea' or something, that belongs in Mildly Constructive or something, doesn't it? I don't want shit sitting in the ad forum for 6 months or a year and not even ever opening. It's pretty ridiculous.

I'm a little baffled by comments along the lines of "then staff has to pay attention to what is going on on their game!!!!!!!!" That's uh...kind of your job, as staff.
As usual I find you completely crazy, but: The idea that we have time to actually monitor all the RP that happens on the game is so completely unreasonable to me that I can't even fathom you said it without snickering darkly behind your hand.
Yesterday, there were twelve scenes that were logged and posted (could have been more that weren't logged). We don't have time to read that much content, man.
If you find that baffling, well you're still crazy.
You don't have to omfg read every single log word for word to know what is going on on your game. The claim that you would, is just well...daft.
On the other hand, if posting logs is the thing you're going to use to judge activity...
Maybe you should be reading them.
Or, idk, write a policy you'll actually take the time to enforce.

Goddamn, that's harsh, even by my standards.
It is pretty harsh, I guess. I'm a harsh mistress. But, dammit, if I'm running a Thundercat MUSH, I'm going to want Lion-O around as often as possible.
I'd prefer once a day. Once a week would probably be tolerable. Once every two weeks and it'd be patently unreasonable for run any sort of active plot.
The thing is "online once a week" is like...tissue paper, in terms of how strict it is.
Once a day is too harsh. I am around/on my computer to what is literally an unhealthy degree, but even I'm going to have a day or two here and there, or a weekend, that I'm not on.
I honestly don't know if there is a way to make a good "indiscriminate, automated" type of activity requirement thing.
It just has to be eyeball tested by a reasonable staffer, IMO. Like..is that Supergirl actually doing shit, or not? No, then yank the character.
I'm a little baffled by comments along the lines of "then staff has to pay attention to what is going on on their game!!!!!!!!" That's uh...kind of your job, as staff.

I just know there's a lot of secret/night time actions that happen. There'd have to be time limits in place, I'd think. I'll read it over later and see what we can put together!
I seem to recall it operating on just an actual 'day to day' scale when we did it. Admittedly, depending on how many people play, that could take forever.

Online once a day?
Goddamn, that's harsh, even by my standards.

Only had time to skim this atm, but I think this covers it pretty well? (Skipping down to the Basic Rules part.)
Basically, the 'Mafia thread' would be just votes each day from everyone playing and maybe trying to sway people to vote for somebody specific, and they'd be PMing their 'special actions' to the Moderator.
Again, it's been ages since I actually did this on a forum. And I think we played some 'knock off' version with witches and shit.

Everything belongs in the hog pit.

RE: MSB Popularity Contest
@auspice Yeah, it relied on PMs and having a GM.

RE: MSB Popularity Contest
@auspice Yeah, I've definitely played it on forum before.
Or some variation of it anyways. Some people are villagers, there's a handful of killers, then like somebody who can protect a person each night, and a person who can 'scry' a person each night, etc.

But I was considering a new forum game just a bit ago. I'll keep the one I came up with in my back pocket if people are enjoying this.
We need to play a game of Mafia or something around here.
I think that's what it was called, anyways? It's been yeeeaaaars.

RE: MSB Popularity Contest
Damn guys.
If you had asked me if anybody had higher than a 1:1 ratio, I'd have probably said "maybe 1 or 2 people".
I got a whopping 0.76

RE: General Video Game Thread
I am genuinely saddened by the fact that more of the Super Robot Taisen games haven't been translated to english.
I played a ps1 years ago that had been shoddily patched to English (and it had stuff like characters from Gundam/etc) and it was amazing. Played a couple of the Gameboy Advance ones too, IIRC.
But then I go through PS2 roms and I see there's like twenty of these games and they're all Japanese-only.

RE: Which canon property/setting would be good for a MU* ?
There must be a lot more to Starship Troopers than the god awful movies, based on all the people interested in MUing in the setting.
What'd I miss?

Luke Cage was about drama.
For some strange reason, I got the impression it was about black history.

RE: Make MSB great again!
One of the inherent problems here, and why the answer is not just "moderate everything", is the fact that it is usually pretty clear that the vast majority of people who have some 'omg MSB is so terrible' complex, are also people who, at some point....
Had an argument of some sort here, and either "lost", or did something to make themselves look even worse, and rather than just realize they fucked up or accept they're not exactly an angel, they shift gears to "DOWN WITH MSB!"
I really, really have trouble believing things like @Paris's claims about "omg there are 20 players who are terrified of being harassed by some person from MSB, actually ON GAME". It sounds fake. It sounds like any generic "we're victims, so forget/ignore every bad thing we ourselves do!" cover up.
I've yet to play a MUSH where you can't literally decide when and who you RP with.
The only cases of actual, genuine stalking & harassment I've ever seen, tend to be performed by people who are ostracized from the entire community.
Cases like @Paris's are almost always grey area "he said, she said" incidents where it's pretty clear neither side is really innocent, but they make it a "ME OR THEM, PICK!" scenario and then take their ball and wander off with some "oh I have so many friends who think like me too! they think you guys are all the worst!"
That's nice.
