That said, though, I think I might enjoy the open world, and am willing to sacrifice the story for it. Is the story of Days Gone comparable to Horizon Zero Dawn? The latter was also open world, but the story was very enjoyable.
I'm having trouble answering this. HZD's story to me, was kind of bland. BUT, the world and everything was wholly original and unique (afaik) and that alone kind of made everything more interesting. Playing Aloy as a kid and the running of the trials scene were also 2 things that I think really helped hook you in. (I never beat HZD for the record.)
Days Gone has yet, for me anyways, to have anything that really 'hits' you, story-wise. And on top of that lacking, it's...just another "zombie" thing? Admittedly I'm only 6 hours in or so.
I think the 'just another zombie thing' is really hurting it for me, in terms of the story. Though there is still plenty of time for them to turn it around with a fun twist or something soon. I'm still at the 'having fun with the gameplay' stage.
