That said, though, I think I might enjoy the open world, and am willing to sacrifice the story for it. Is the story of Days Gone comparable to Horizon Zero Dawn? The latter was also open world, but the story was very enjoyable.

I'm having trouble answering this. HZD's story to me, was kind of bland. BUT, the world and everything was wholly original and unique (afaik) and that alone kind of made everything more interesting. Playing Aloy as a kid and the running of the trials scene were also 2 things that I think really helped hook you in. (I never beat HZD for the record.)

Days Gone has yet, for me anyways, to have anything that really 'hits' you, story-wise. And on top of that lacking, it's...just another "zombie" thing? Admittedly I'm only 6 hours in or so.

I think the 'just another zombie thing' is really hurting it for me, in terms of the story. Though there is still plenty of time for them to turn it around with a fun twist or something soon. I'm still at the 'having fun with the gameplay' stage.

I really wish they'd done 'more' with the whole...survival/resources bit? Like, gotta go raid a military base to get stuff to make a kevlar vest. Gotta go hit some factory to get gunpowder so you can buy bullets at the base. That kind of stuff? Also, no 'city' environment so far feels kinda lame. I'm guessing the map transitions at some point in the story to another 'open world' area, because this first map doesn't seem terribly big. So maybe I'll get my city later.

Instead, the resource mechanic is just...literally the exact same stuff as LoU. Like...seriously, they just copy/pasted the inventory system from there.

Honestly? Pretty disappointing. The game isn't bad by any means, but it really could've been so much more.

I really want a like...go on a trip to the abandoned, infested grocery store to try and get some canned goods for the camp kind of zombie shit.

Days Gone is literally Last of Us : The Open World Motorcyclening.

Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. YMMV.

So many of the mechanics/etc feel the exact same as LoU.

The story is certainly worse (so far, anyways), in exchange for the open world stuff.

If you can get over the frothing at the mouth about the absurd grind to unlock cosmetics, Mortal Kombat is pretty amazing. The story mode is nothing amazing, but it's definitely as entertaining as any cheesy action movie, if not more so. I spent probably 5-6 hours in it and I'm only a little past half way, I think, and I was at least entertained the whole way so far, and really enjoyed a few parts. Which is pretty rare for a fighting game, generally.

This game has somehow made me like Johnny Cage when I always thought he was annoying douche before.

Ignoring the grind for cosmetics, you can, from my foray into things, get at least 1 good skin for your preferred characters that is distinctly different from their base skins (which good god was super important for Kitana and Skarlet), from things like....You get 'normal human' Kitana in story mode. You get a NOT Tusken Raider Skarlet from her tutorial. Etc.

The graphics and mechanics and just...general 'fun level' of playing put Soul Calibur and DoA to shame, I think. Can't comment on Street Fighter or Tekken, haven't played their recent editions.

The Tower of Time bits are a little absurd. Fighting in a whole tower of characters who have 2x your hp, or have a MvC-esque 'buddy pop-in assist' firing off a special attack every 3 seconds is just not fun. Buuut, if you really want a tower of time reward or something, you can set your character to AI, and I can personally attest that, with the right AI loadout (IE you can set them to favor grapples/combos/zoning/etc), apparently an AI-controlled character has no problem beating ass through those difficulties. Because I am currently doing that while watching youtube.

ETA : From everything I've heard though, I wouldn't get it unless you're getting it on the PS4.

    • RE: What's your nerd origin story?

Shining Force, the old Sega game.

I dunno how it happened, but that game was my gateway drug to reading fantasy stuff and playing video games.

I had of course played like...mario kart and stuff on the SNES before as a kid, but I remember being at a cousin's house and watching them play Shining Force and thinking it was the coolest thing in the world. It had princesses and dragons and horseknights (yes i know wtf a centaur is), an awesome sadstory werewolf guy (Zylo is bae), and cute little jellyfish things that murdered the whole map for you, and spoopy skeery demon bad guys (in a clown tent).

I'd never read anything other than like..the generic Goosebumps/Kids In School Dumb Books kinda stuff. And after that game I got into LotR, played a couple of FF games, etc (My intro to Shining Force was yeeeaaars after Sega Genesis was already old, and PS1 was out, so I kinda went straight from SF to Final Fantasy Tactics and FF7). And it was all downhill from there.

    • RE: Sexuality: IC and OOC

My biggest problem playing a male PC is pronouns. When you're playing Wolverine and are referring to your character as she/her/etc in your poses, it kind of stands out. But aside from that I'm not sure I've ever had any issues. In normal day-to-day RP or TS.

Over the years, I've found that I don't particularly enjoy TSing with male PCs because I find they usually suck at it. I enjoy my 3-6+ paragraph TS and I haven't encountered many male PCs that write that much in general poses (and do it in an interesting way).

Which isn't to say I don't TS male players, because I most assuredly have.

I've never really encountered any of the weird/gross/lame/shitty 'guy trying to RP lesbian sex' stuff, and I suspect it's because I'm not shy about ignoring people who suck at writing and/or are weird to deal with OOCly.

Normal, plain lesbian TS is surprisingly dull to me these days (which always feels weird to recognize), and I suppose it's in part due to writing it for 15 years. I don't do hetero IRL, but I am usually down for it in TS with people I've already built a rapport with (and usually a female player on an npc/temp-char).

      TLDR : Magic cocks ftw.

but are still raging assholes? Is it still a safe space if people are snide, two-faced, or judgmental, but not based on any factors other than the other person's personality?

Strange question, considering that all those factors seem to apply to the community's creator, judging from the last thread.

Odds are this community won't do much of anything and won't be any 'better' than any other random group of people on the internet. They're not going to go purge the Azazello's or Rex's of the world who are actual problems.

They're going to sit around and knitting circle about somebody who took a position they wanted on some game or is TSing the person they want to fuck or w/e, and probably harass that person.

Double post time. As a heads up to anyone playing Destiny 2 the soft cap got fucked up. Its supposed to be 690, but Bungle fucked up and it's650 instead. The worst part is that it likely won't be fixed for another two weeks at the earliest.

Kind of baffling that they fucked this up and that they won't take the game down for 5 seconds to fix a numerical value in the code? (And then just throw 1-3 prime engrams at everybody to shut them up? IDK.)

Just an FYI guys. If you're playing Anthem on PS4 or XBox the game is causing critical hard crashes on the consoles and in some cases people are reporting that their systems are getting bricked.

Now right now there's only a few reports of bricking but the critical crashes were discussed on the Giant Bomb podcast the other night and is in their written review of the game.

EA is taking revenge for everybody shitting on their 0-effort disaster.
