Or do most people (I never even considered this viewpoint before!) view these as more 'descriptions' and whichever of the players poses first is scene-setting?

      I think it depends?

I have definitely been to plot scenes that are opened with a GM set of basically "stuff is happening in the neighborhood!" so the person who poses first in the scene is...still kind of setting the scene, since they set the tone of how/why/where/what people are meeting up to do about the GM's set.

    • RE: MU*, Youth, and LGBT+ Identity

There is a difference between having your playlist be public, and....being one of those people who gives out your discord/email/phone number/RL name/bank account number/address/etc to every random person you do a scene with, and then complains about having problems because of it.

I think it's probably like a 1% of people who actually have problems just from their playlist. Not to minimize the problems those people have, I'm sure it's stressful and sucks, but it's far from common.

As @saosmash and @Auspice said, playlists generally simply serve to help go "oh I played with that guy on X-other-MU and we did not mesh at all" or "oh i really liked Jane on that other game!"

      On to the topic itself.

I've been MUing for some 17 years or so, and started on MUDs. In the past 10 years, I have encountered almost no issue playing almost exclusively gay characters. (A small handful have been bi.)

Admittedly, I tend to be relatively...'quiet' about my business. I mean, I'll flirt and stuff in public scenes, but I am pretty far from in your face, unless it's a private scene.

I, as a player, don't have a ton of patience for players (or characters) who are super in your face about sexual business, and that has nothing to do with gender or sexual orientation. I don't like hetero guys that are constantly in my face or showing up to scenes with their girlfriend on a leash, and I don't like it when it's two guys or two women doing the same thing. (No problem with leashes, the problem is when and where.)

In my experience, the problem where LGBT+ characters/players encounter issues on games has largely been when they're constantly drawing attention to it, etc.

I know sexuality feels like a HUGE issue to us as people, but it should never be the "defining characteristic" of a person, or a character. Your character isn't "a lesbian woman". Hopefully she is "a doctor with a mysterious past" or something first and foremost.

Edit : Though, in retrospect "gay" or "trans" is a better fucking RP hook than "JANE IS REALLY SHORT TEEHEE!" "OH AND SHE HAS FUCKING RAINBOW HAIR!" So fuck. What do I know.

Fire Emblem is amazing so far (I’m not very far into it). Really liking what they’ve done to get away from the same old same old FE mechanics. The new class system seems pretty cool.

It’s really strange to see how well the “daily life” mechanics of Persona + Trails of Cold Steel /etc keep you engaged.

Which, on that note, it definitely feels like Fire Emblem: Trails of Cold Steel edition so far. Which is a compliment.

Double post, the hype for FF7 is definitely real now. I was so worried when I saw a month or two back that it was labelled as an "action RPG". Worries averted, for now.

I know they are going to do something dumb somewhere though. They're going to try to add new party members or Aeris isn't going to die, or something.

These media companies can never seem to leave well enough alone when they're rehashing an old property.

Please don't fuck up Red XIII and Yuffie.

I'm sure a lot of people here are going to balk at the idea, but I kinda sorta got into Destiny 2 for like 3 months earlier this year (got bored with it, as is standard for me with MMOs), and I felt like as a game, it had one of the best soundtracks I've experienced in a long while.

'Journey' and its accompaniment of one of the first story missions is one of the most perfect bits of story/music/gameplay I've ever had the pleasure of playing through.

      Just the music.

Actual HUD-less playthrough of the story mission. Skipped the first 2 minutes or so to get closer to when the music starts.

If some guy calls out of work, the day of work, to go volunteer somewhere... (Which would be the equivalent of a mother calling out to tend to her sick child.)

I don't really think his coworkers are going to be cheering for his community spirit.

If he put in a vacation request for it ahead of time, or is doing in his off time...

      Not really seeing the correlation.

Deleted that long ass post, just to sum my comments up more succinctly.

If you want to say that some employers are racist/sexist and think a minority isn't going to be willing to devote that extra time, you probably have a point.

But saying they expect the extra things and it's not fair to those minorities is, I feel, a completely different point, and an invalid one.

    • RE: Accounting for gender imbalances

@faraday said in Accounting for gender imbalances:

Here's a concrete example that has nothing and everything to do with gender. It's quite trendy for software companies these days to expect candidates to do all kinds of extracurricular activities. Conferences. Open source projects. Community engagement. Or they'll make doing some kind of coding project--requiring hours of work--part of the interview process. Sounds great on paper, right? Anybody who's doing all that crap outside of work must be super devoted.

But you know who doesn't have time for that kind of stuff? People with families. Especially women. Also other minority candidates who may face additional social challenges that divert their attention outside of work.

I am going to 100% regret touching this thread, but this really stood out to me.

This appears to have quite literally nothing to do with gender or race?

I'd even dare to go so far as saying you are harming women's rights by taking some weird stance of "women have to spend all their time tending to their families, they don't have time to work".

What in the world does being a minority have to do with how much time you have to devote to things? If you as a person have 20 different responsibilities outside of work, that are going to render you incapable of doing what your employer expects of you, that sounds like a personal problem that, again, has literally nothing to do with sex or race or any of that.

It's on YOU to make that time if it's something you want to do. Tell your husband to go fuck himself and make dinner for himself and the kids, you've got to stay at work for another hour.
