      Let's take a look at it. 🙂

      deal with obnoxious charcreation/app process

What do you find particularly obnoxious about it? Like, what's the worst part about WoD CGen as opposed to other systems' (assuming there is an approval process of course for them, CGen-less MU* don't count).

But why not be the change you want in the world? Make something happen, get a story going. Run a PrP if need be, get your character in some trouble then ask your friends (or find some) for help, get in a faction and do something unexpected, start a group (coterie/cabal/pack/etc) if you can't find one. You know? Be proactive, make some ripples and pull others into that madness.

These things are tied together. The character creation for me is obnoxious because not only have I never played WoD tabletop, I've never really played ANY tabletop outside a couple cool one-offs my friends have done on game nights. I don't have a good knowledge of the mechanics (ok I have NO knowledge of the mechanics)

Which might make you ask why I'd want to play these games, and the answer is I love modern supernatural/horror settings.

      @Derp said:

So, this might be a dumb question, but have you considered, you know... asking people if they want to play? Because from your flowchart it sounds like a whole lot of passive, and not a lot of active. And active is really the key to finding stuff.

Again, the real issue here is my lack of familiarity with the setting. I have no trouble being active to find RP (or, have never had an issue with this before) but my preferred style is the kind that happens organically - that just never seems to happen without an IC grid people want to hang out on more than the OOC rooms. Then, when I have a good feel for characters in my newly-known group, I can come up with a plot that helps advance them/appeals to their chars or personalities. That's the storytelling I like.

I hated, on the last game I staffed for, that we were expected to run bullshit scenes anyone and everyone could participate in. Generic fires. Rat swarms. Whatever. HATE.

I only participate in sexytime rp or rp deep interpersonal relationships. I have striking looks 2 and you are obviously already in love with my PC.

I doubt this ever happened. I do remember telling you to quit your shit, both IC and OOC, since you and your partner were two of the most fucking obnoxious Arrows ever to come into my general vicinity. That was fun. But then again, all of your characters are generally obnoxious assholes, so why does that surprise me?

Ahhhh, I just missed you ❤

I am transparently downvoting you because obviously that was a feature, not a bug.

In more general news, I successfully made it through my first WoD chargen here and everyone is very nice.

WoD chargen is the worst. I just went through it awhile ago, got all excited about my character (BLATANTLY STOLEN) concept, and then I get in game and no one roleplays.

It's really turned me off to most sandbox games, and even though I got all excited about BITN's concept I have to remind myself that 100% of my experience with WoD games so far has been a simple flowchart.

      2.
Wait for char to be approved. Hang out in the OOC room with the intention of making friends to play with despite not really being much for OOC chatting with strangers.
      3.
Begin to hate the OOC room, myself, and everyone else in it.
      4.
Get approved! Get 1 scene with whoever talked me into trying game.
      5.
Realize the bulk of the game just hangs out in that OOC room waiting for something to happen to go IC for. Despair of ever running into cool random RP (which is the only way I make friends in RP communities - still not much for ooc chatting)
      6.
Stop logging in. REPEAT WITH NEW GAME.

I don't know about anyone else but... If the game is truly a sandbox in theory why couldn't your PC change covenants through RP. Or whatever needs to happen in play? I mean the staff is so hands off I feel like you could have your PC turn into an anime dragon and it'd be cool as shit as long as you don't need a job approved on it >.>

Why not just do magic like they did in the Second Sight book but slightly changed where needed for the new ruleset. It sounds like its what you're looking for...

Because that system is not open-ended, and requires conversion into CoD. If I'm going to do converting, I might as well use the mechanics provided in M:tAw.

Oh, from the back and forth it seemed like you didn't want to use Mage but something more "mage light".

Honestly, I know it doesn't seem like it because it feels very simple, but that's actually too complicated in my opinion for what you're trying to accomplish. It just... adds a step too many. IMO.

      I don't think it's too complicated.

On the one hand, you implicitly suggested that the free-throwing of fireballs may be contrary to the low-magic feel I wanted to accomplish. On the other hand, you're saying it's too complex for a player to count up the 1s in a roll and apply it as bashing damage if a WP is not spent for attribute-affinity Rotes.

I don't think that the latter is too complicated, but you're also right on the first point. I'm just trying to find a middle-ground, if possible.

The second option seems pretty familiar to the fantasy world. Mages that cast a lot of magic get tired, and sometimes fall over with fatigue. Whereas M:tAw requires the expenditure of Mana to constantly unleash Rotes, I don't see why requiring the expenditure of 1 bashing damage is an unacceptable alternative to Mana-spending.

So, I don't think it's too complex, but, again, the system is mostly in development. I get the feeling, however, that whether you count up the 1s or whether a Mana cost Is converted to a 1B cost isn't going to make or break whether you, as a player, would play on the game.

Was the plan to use other "spheres" (vampire/werewolf/ect)?

@ThatOneDude Watching Staff work crazy hours to help keep a game going, I get tired of the 'Staff don't give a fuck' argument. Maybe they don't where YOU play, but I know plenty who do.

Word, I hear you but I said specifically those two games which I thought from the other response meant I was wrong in my thinking. But, what do I know? I'm just a player of games. I don't have friends in the staff or on my skype or anything else. I'm just ThatOneDude that shows up to play and hates when he learns he's wasting his time in a game.

I'm not sure why you'd expect staff to give a fuck about you if you aren't giving a fuck about their game. Just asking?

So... My statement was incorrect? Did I miss something that's plainly available to people that play on either of those games?

@skew But in terms of the Reach, would adjusting to power level at some point be fudging or just the nature of the game?

I mean if you are a 800XP vampire searching for your foe who also in theory is an 800XP NPC, wouldn't that foe potentially have better ways of obfuscating his tracks than say a 100XP NPC? So with the powerlevel going up the difficulty goes up as well, right?

    • RE: DMs, GMs, STs: Do you fudge rolls?

There is this game out there, I played on it when I first learned how to Mu* and it gave me a real taste of the kind of people that are in this hoppy. You know the kind with their friends that play and they all staff and makes things happen together... Maybe you don't because hopefully games don't allow people to use their staff bits to forward and assist their PC bits and those of their friends and co-staffers.

I played on this game, learning the 1e rules of WoD and was a master of the rules! In scenes STs (staff) would take control and make hidden rolls and inform you of the outcome. It was a blast! Until I looked behind the curtain and became staff...

No one knew the real rules in nWoD they were all from oWoD and just kinda winged it. If they rolled it was more for a binary result of fail or not that didn't have to use the correct dice. Worse yet the number of times dice were never rolled because it would be funny/cool/lead to some epic whatever was staggering.

In my mind that was the worst betrayal ever. Why spend the time building up my PC if I'm going to get in PVP with someone else and not even end up using my stats? But I guess that's the extreme end of things and its always soured my experience. Since playing there I like to see the rolls and the results.

On the flip side of things, if we're not using dice and just playing around or if the ST were to ask "Psssst, hey man so for fun would you mind..." or if I got the inkling to do so "Psssst, hey ST would you mind if..." That's all fun and games.
