I don't really care about how many people you managed to rope into signing up for a forum account to jump in and defend Arm's honor. Once someone immerses themselves in Armageddon for a while it becomes blatantly obvious that players - especially the veterans - have formed an exclusive club.

      Please review the forum rules.

If you wish to criticize the game or those who run it then you - or anyone else - are free to create a new thread in the Constructive or Hog Pit section and please do so there.

I'm taking this brief opportunity to reiterate the chilling effect of the forum rules as stand—through disrupting conversation threads—though will concede that as staff doesn't enforce them strictly then it's not as chilling as it could be.

MUSHers only tolerate it because that's what we're used to.

Except spawns. Ask any ten Mushers if they would use a client without spawns again and I'd put good money down that 8 of the 10 would threaten to chew your arm off for the suggestion. Maybe 7.

      Seriously, good money. $5.

We only tolerated it because it's all we had.

@Sparks was a hero because she gave us something new, something more modern, based on her experience with Trillium.

A lot of clients are still catching up.

I'll be honest, and not video-gamey but still, if they find a way to give Stan Lee cameos of any tasteful sort (on billboards, name-dropping in places) for the rest of this era of Comic Book Media, I will be content.

Creators are important to society and should be recognized. edit: And paid.

When people who aren't lawyers or legally representative start pointing fingers for fan-created derivative works reminds me of the 1960s ... 50s ... let's keep on going backwards, shall we.

Unofficially, I see this thread as a lot of "nuh-uh" and "no you" and best of all, "better than thou". I've seen fans act this way before. I've seen authors act this way before. Both GRRM's and those who say they represent him have helped me not only not want to pick up his books, but avoid them. Nice.

    • RE: What is out there? Hard and soft codebases of choice.

Christmas Eve, not much time, still requesting: Evennia have its own help files for people who do not know how to or understand how to pour through code, let alone understand what directory structures mean what. I still facerub when I have to find which library a function or object or template structure lives in, because it is not fun at all for anyone ever period, even people who've been coding Mush softcode for years/decades and "where is it?" is a painfully frequent question.

I can't ask that Evennia devs do anything for the common Python code, but for the Evennia structures they can sure as heck do something as simple as a searchable wiki. Have you seen how well-organized the Oracle SQL and PL/SQL docs and even some of the other interface docs are? PyDoc, maybe?

      Thinking out loud, there.

Except that you can’t rely on a community to change just because. It can happen, and it’s beautiful when it does, but without someone with a whistle sitting in the high chair by the pool, it’s just Lord of the Flies.

I think this comment wins the thread:

      HaiWolfe said:

What I'm trying to get at is that there is a dualistic nature to the debate: (1) The level of roleplay enforcement, and (2) the coded features of the MUD itself.

I think I'm starting to see where the permadeath requirement comes in; a very, very MUD culture response, I'm guessing to problems they feel needs to be solved.

While here in MUSH land, we look confused with, "That ... doesn't mean RP? Wha?"

Hell, no MUSH would classify as "RPI" according to these people, even though we take our RP very seriously. 'WHO' is a tool, and if we don't have 'where' reporting then there will be heartache. Pages, channels, all ways to organize and table-talk things that need table-talked. I think half of any game I code is for player-tools and not character-tools. For us, this is critical, because we play the game as an extended tabletop.

Until someone comes along and tries to figure out the difference between Mush and Mud, there will be no synthesis. This is why I think Optional Realities' supposed goal is silly and comes down to, "It is what I say it is." As long as it isn't supposed to be about Mushes, sure, but the original post is all about the Mushes. Then isn't. Then is. Then isn't. Yeah. This isn't solvable without understanding and compromise.

tl;dr: Optional Realities == Vanity Project

There's a reason we announce PrPs and allow players to sign up instead of just picking rooms people are already playing in to run them. Opt-in is a great thing. 🙂

ooc Hey guys, I was thinking about running an action scene here about someone on the run from Possessed rednecks; anyone in?

I mean, you don't have to schedule these things to not disrupt another scene.

People saying something is good while they are not allowed to say something is bad is utterly pointless.

      Advertisement board's rules:

This is not the place to criticise or attack either those games or their runners. If there isn't already a thread in the Mildly Constrictive or Hogpit sections for them then please feel free to start one, and we will link between them for easy access (but check first!).

      That's a misreading, dude.

Is it? Because that’s how I read it. “Criticism” does not mean “not constructive” and it certainly doesn’t mean “attack”.

We have had many, many staffers who’ve taken anything less than kid-glove or glad-handing as an insult. I posit that those people are just as non-constructive as the out and out insults, but because they’re the defender in the case it’s more often and easier to forgive.

This is mostly why I think it’s better to have the advert thread as being only advertisement information, and any commentary about the game, good or ill, in a separate thread. It doesn’t have to be locked, but if it’s not updates or events or the like, it doesn’t belong in the main advert.

The more I ponder this, the more passionate I feel about my position.

I explained up there why I believe death is important to storytelling.

Which is why I see it as a vanity project. You choose the games. You choose the definitions. It's your world, and we are guests. If we disagree then we are wrong.

Benevolent Dictator isn't a bad way to run things, but the limitations are trivial and extend beyond the permadeath thing. As I see no invitation to seek compromise, I don't see much interest in the culture, save where it intersects with your preconceived notions.

Thus, vanity. Not vanity horrible, just vanity.

So I finished Far Cry 5.

43 hours. What can I say? I like me some side-quest'n.

There was a game-breaking bug at the end that has no place being there, considering how long the game's been out.

I have to say that I liked it. I can't imagine playing it again, and there was one section...let's call it the Red Nightmares...that was un-fun for me as someone who normally doesn't play FPSes, but after putting the game down on "easy" it could be tolerated for as brief as they were.

But I never had a question what I was supposed to do, even in the boss fights. I wasn't bored otherwise; it felt fairly tight. The unique companions always had me engaged and often laughing, even when they got far too repetitive.

I'm not sure what I felt about the overall portrayal of themes, but I don't think they ever betrayed the idea of Country Folk vs. Cultists, the question of what is family and what is community.

Yeah, I liked it. Solid "A" grade.
