      Ganymede's customized Bloodlines are in.

      Hurt Locker's absolutely horrible fighting styles are in, but I haven't worked out how sheet is going to show them, and I'm not sure if the xp spending system knows what to do with them either. It should, but I have too many headaches to work it out right now.

      Promethean is on the list.

      It's on the list under "Never", but it did make the list.

      @therealfake

      Also realize that a lot of us are jaded and biased to what we believe it should be. There's a well-known survival mod for FO4 that's just after the bombs fell, literally just after, that is hellish and deadly. I need to clear my thoughts of that. I also have a bias against any Texas Is The Only State That's Right ideology I run into with many modern-day Texans. Hell, if they wanted to leave the Union, I would smile and tell them not to let the Constitution hit them on the ass on the way out.

      Except Huston. I'd miss Huston.

      I'm 100% wrong to let these color what you WOULD make.

      I mainly wanted, at least in my head anyway, this to be a PVE game focused on seeing how people handle such drastic change and adversity.

      Be prepared to be the source of all that change and adversity. Warn people that if they log in, even if they stay in their huts, things are Going To Happen To Them. That kind of thing.

      @faraday

      I posit that Leia won the social roll (intimidation) and gave up false intel to make the other player believe otherwise, or only partly won/lost it (did not betray her cause, but gave up something important).

      There are several systems that go this way.

      Both require players willing to do this, a GM, or Apocalypse World. 😉

      Perhaps his Willpower is high enough that the system says that you can waive the roll. Perhaps the system has a bonus stay on focus. Perhaps the system is about fighting and therefore pain is not factored.

      This is my point and has been my point. If the game is about a thing, you play about the thing. Imagine how dull a Shadow Run game would be if you weren’t engaging the conceit there in the title of the game!

      It's perfectly cromulent to not be grabbed by a game line.

      The best description I heard of nWoD was "they took out the worst and best parts of the game". OP's WoD2/CoD seem to be trying to find the engagement again, while New WW's New New WoD is grinding everything back down to basics and adding porn-star misogyny (with a splash of "stop complaining it's called the World of Darkness LOL" that is giving me so much confidence).

      Because Foreign City by Night inevitably becomes 'All Ameican Expats in Foreign City by Night'? People write what they know.

      Even WoD games set in American cities become Generic Metropolis By Night. How quickly did this happen to The Reach, for example?

      Two games I played that this didn't happen to: Paris:FdM and Haunted Memories (at least as long as Mozart was running it) because the game-runners were passionate about the setting, and so they helped make sure that the setting was part of the game too.

      Which is central to so many "how do I engage people?" questions around here: Be Engaging. If you want people to engage with the setting, make the setting important. Setting can be just as much of a factor in events as anything else; use it.

    • RE: Optional Realities & Project Redshift

      A follow-up, separate from the above discussion:

      It occurs to me that I am on a crusade, and that I am passionate about this thread and it's not really clear why, so I'm going to spell it out.

      1. The way that OR is presenting itself on its own website is to tie all the different Mu* games together. And yet, the prerequisites for listing these selfsame games are based exclusively on Mud understandings and philosophies. I don't see any attempt to reach out, but to accept those who already fit the mold. This strikes me as disingenuous, misleading, and as someone who quite enjoys his own part of the community I would feel I was doing everyone in non-Mud communities a disservice if I didn't point this out.

      2. On a personal level, it really ticks me off when someone says they're being representative of me, personally, without having one clue who I am or what I do. This is making me hotter on the topic than I might normally be. I love a good nonsense philosophical discussion as much as the next person, but don't tell me that you have my best interests at heart unless you have the slightest clue what those interests are.

      I'm not going to stop being passionate on these items, but since I am dominating the derailment of this thread, I thought maybe I should be fair and put myself in my place. After all, you can't build bridges without a good foundation. Sometimes I'm the one building bridges, sometimes I'm not.

      Welcome to the Soapbox.

      Then what is it about the Doors system that is being hotly contested, here? I get the feeling that there is an argument going on in this thread that is only half-informed.

      We're re-visiting the age-old question of whether it is good policy to allow an opt-out provision in social combat situations.

      Why for social situations and not physical situations? Why social situations and not supernaturally-powered situations?

      I personally think there already is a provision: Fade to Black. Nobody should be forced to RP out a situation they don't want to, tho that doesn't give them the right to say it didn't happen. (With a few exceptions that almost every game made this decade has gone with.) Even PK doesn't usually hit this list.

      @bobotron said in Social 'Combat': the hill I will die on (because I took 0 things for physical combat):

      @thenomain

      Right, but we circle back around to the 'buy in' and 'player reasonability' angles. I've had tons of fun, personally, getting socially fucked in a game, even without a carrot like a Beat or whatever. But the community has proven that people like us are in the minority.

      I honestly think that these are issues in any PvP situation, regardless if it's social or combat. Combat is more accepted ("buy-in"), but having lived through many, many oWoD games I can honestly say that multi-day combats are a direct result of the lack of player buy-in or player reasonability.

      nWoD largely solves this by making combat more streamlined, far more structured, and easier to understand the cause and effect.

      What I like of Apocalypse World is that their social system is: If this happens, this is how you can get screwed. (Bonus: And you get to choose.) This is how every system works.

      What I like about Fate Core is that each system that degrades your character is exactly the same. Physical damage is really "negative physical effects". Social damage is really "negative social effects". (Mental, really, but for the conversation it can be both.)

      So we have people who are not familiar with anything but non-social-combat systems worried about buy-in and player reasonability when I find the former is up to the game to provide, and the latter is up to staff to enforce.

      It's always about what I want to do with my character, yes. Social, mental, combat, crafting, people whose ideas are rejected are going to feel themselves rejected.

      The best RPers I've known feel a reasonable personal detachment from their characters. They still hate it when something goes wrong, but will roll with it because they're not taking it personally.

      As long as people know.

      But I was mainly addressing why so many games didn’t want Mummy, from my understanding and feedback. Similar as to why Demon is disliked; staff isn’t interested in integrating the story.
