      I explained up there why I believe death is important to storytelling.

      Which is why I see it as a vanity project. You choose the games. You choose the definitions. It's your world, and we are guests. If we disagree then we are wrong.

      Benevolent Dictator isn't a bad way to run things, but the limitations are trivial and extend beyond the permadeath thing. As I see no invitation to seek compromise, I don't see much interest in the culture, save where it intersects with your preconceived notions.

      Thus, vanity. Not vanity horrible, just vanity.

      @ganymede I upvote not because it's a good thing but because I know that feeling.

      Really? Because I upvoted to laugh. Muahaha!

      No, just kidding, I hit the up button because it’s rare that the lawyerbot reminds us that she’s human.

      And empathy.

      Okay, so let me ask the question:

      What is "Social RP"?

      @auspice said in Random links:

      "I'm so sorry but my friend is joining us last minute"
      becomes
      "Thank you for letting me bring my friend." and yet all before anyone had even heard of this addition to the party.

      I don't think that was the idea. The idea is that you ask first instead of put yourself on others. The conversation I think she was alluding to was:

      "I know it's last minute, but do you mind if I invite my friend?"

      Then the group has a choice, instead of none. Then you thank them for their consideration, no matter how it turns out.

      I've made good ones.

      I've made great ones.

      I've made bad ones.

      I've made boring ones.

      But if all people want to play are Social MU*s with RPG elements, then why bother making anything else?

      This is a deeply depressing answer to me, and I hope that there is room for more.

      To be fair, if my partner asked me to help with housework at 0300, I would probably strangle her.

      Some of us call that “noon”.

      @three-eyed-crow

      Understood, and you may note that I expanded my summary to "Social MU* with RPG elements" which is 95% of what I see people defaulting to.

      Apparently when people say they want "something to do", it has a specific meaning.

      That we used to make our own fun and somehow can't anymore has baffled me for a while.

      Also note that I don't make my own games, but I code the games of those I feel have a strong game design ethic. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses is a critical life trait.

      Dude, you use cat gifs. If you can't accept "noon is whenever I say it is" then you're not really a cat person.

      @vulgarkitten

      I've never had a character get married IC.

      I've had situations where you might as well call it married, and as far as I and the other player know, they still are some 20 years later. So: A long time?

      Double post, sorry.

      @nightshade said in What's missing in MUSHdom?:

      What are you going to scene about if the setting is boring (without inherent conflict), and the game gives you no tools for affecting the setting and other players in a meaningful, productive way?

      One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. If the setting doesn’t engage, then why even log in?

      As far as affecting the setting, I’ve never needed tools for that, just permission from staff.

      The tools make this easier, and thus more time effective, and thus more likely to be followed though, but it starts with someone saying “yes”. After that, I’m free.

      If there was a competing Remington Steele game, that would continue the march of Pierce Brosnen spy games. We round it up with a Tailor of Panama themed game and viola.

      Congratulations on your choice to get married. Be advised that your wedding day will be the subject of the complaints of the ignorant and the jealous. I can say that, without equivocation, no one who attended my wedding who complained remain in my life, so I look at the event as a tremendously successful weeding-out test.

      One could almost say ... “wedding-out”.

      Hm.

      Is combat a mini game?

      If so, I still don’t think I’ve engaged in a mini game that I’ve really enjoyed, tho I understand that a lot of people liked it on The Greatest Generation.

      I love post-apoc games. I would play the shit out of this one and Fallout: Montreal (presuming I could get myself to play a game set in Quebec).

      You do know that dark irony is at the core of Fallout, right?

      (edit: But that was a funny pun. I lol'd.)
