      @bobotron

I only have sucky code or use SQL. Also, what data do you want stored? This will change a lot. Else:

      <timestamp> <amt> <data>

Use | as a delimiter, keep | from being in the data part, and throw it on an attribute.

Maybe check for attribute length and start another attribute if it gets full.

Does that count as "good" for your purposes?

      @ortallus

I no longer see any hidden object games and almost no furry games. I still see the Sakura series because it’s amusing, and the Nekopara series because I cannot believe how many people are okay with pedophilia if it’s “not really humans”.

Steam could be much easier to filter, but it’s pretty smart. If you’re seeing scat games, then there are tag overlaps with the games you are playing. You should be able to have Steam stop making most suggestions altogether.

Mind you, I wasn’t trying to justify to anyone why one was better than another, but why I prefer Steam over Epic which was, I thought, the conceit of your asking.

It’s a matter of preference. Steam boots quickly and tho the update cycle is annoying I know there is very nearly nothing I want to play that’s not there, that’s not well presented, and that’s not easy to browse related things. Steam wants me to play games.

Epic wants me to play their games. Now that they have a few more options that aren’t theirs it will become increasingly more varied over time, browsing and, yes, the community are not solid, the software is still more about me buying more than playing my games, and last I launched it it was dog slow.

And they have yet to earn my trust, which is something you need for a DRM system.

I have no idea what's going on with Reno-rebranding-to-Portland.

They were waiting on me to port the stuff over to the new host and tweak a few things. (I think @surreality set up the new wiki. Someone did.) The codebase is now ready for the new staff to clean house and update the grid. I suspect it's days instead of weeks.

Oh, and an ANSI-colored connect screen, because why not.

That is to say: Yes, finding people with the time and willingness to work on this hobby is what's rare. You are 100% correct. I would make it greater than 100% correct if that was a thing, so I'll make it "100% and a cookie."

      --

edit: Come to think of it, it's kind of too bad that people dogpile into some games while other deserving games, such as that Horror Mu*, are constantly advertising.

I'm tempted to start a thread called '129 ways to get a husband' and see if the readers of the soapbox can do any better.

They already have, if only by not starting a thread called '129 ways to get a husband.'

While it's possible that you would approach it with sensibility, so far your track record puts these odds somewhere about Cleveland Browns level.

(Watch, I say this and the Browns start their best winning streak of all time. I would take the hit to my ego for that!)

The launcher is part of the DRM though, so what you're really asking for is a DRM that doesn't require the launcher to function I guess?

Or have it happen behind the scenes.

Or have it authorize without having to open the entire goddamn launcher.

Because so far only Steam has managed to make a launcher that is not ass.

      Correction: Itch.io too.

      Pros and cons of EPIC

      • Pros: Um...it...has a game I'd play? If anyone is going to unseat Steam, this system is on the right path.
      • Cons: If anyone is going to unseat Steam in the worst possible way, this system is on the right path. Now I have 'download-software exclusive games' as well as 'console exclusive' games.

      Pros and cons of Steam

      • Pros: It did it first and probably still does it best.
      • Cons: I forget to support developers better on Humble, GoG, and Green Man.

Someone needs to come up with a system where no matter your game store, you can just find your game and launch it without launching the launcher which has always been kind of dumb. I put up with it in Steam because it was better than what came before.

I’ll probably be playing myself, too, but to coin what @skew said, “Hopefully you’ll be able to find your voice this time.”

It would be a very Theno thing to play myself and not find my voice.

You know, it just occurred to me: It's possible Netflix is cancelling the Marvel shows because Marvel wants the characters for potential movie outlets.

We'll never know, but it makes as much sense as Netflix not wanting to admit if the shows were too costly.

      There is no technomagic.

      This makes me sad.

      https://spiritlakemu.com/wiki/magic#creating-discovering-spells

This also makes me sad. Here's a firehose of construction:

This game's Wiki is all over the place. It's nice, brief, clever, legible, beautiful, but not consistent. The Character Creation page links to Schools and therefore specific spells, but not to the aforementioned Magic page.

I'm now starting to wonder why the Character Generation page doesn't link straight to this Magic System page, which has the same information and a lot more.

In fact, as magic characters are the focus of the game, I'm wondering why this page isn't more featured.

This isn't a nit-pick, this is outright confusion that can probably be fixed by dumping the 'Schools' page and linking the Magic System page in its place.

      @faraday

I would lock page to an unused flag (since you can't lock it to just any flag), then lock that flag to Wizard-only, then have the flag set/unset based on location.

I have a working prototype for this exact thing for people who are frozen, having to do with @tel and @link more than anything else. Can be done.

      Hey folks,

For starters please keep in mind this is the constructive section of the site.

During a recent private discussion a user suggested that we run a neutral, themeless game on MSB. There would be no CGen or rules, only a way for people to log on, pick a room and just play whatever they have in mind.

      So a Social/Talker.

      • Very little active administration other than to keep the game running.

As offenses can be a lot more immediate, more staff to keep offenses known and dealt with, even if it's as basic as "don't be a dick".

      1. Is this something you'd be interested in? Would it be useful?

Eh, sure, yes, as long as it's constructive-only.

      1. Can people more or less behave/handle themselves?

As long as you give the rules teeth, but it mostly comes down to who would be logged in, what culture is there. If you're going to throw open the gates, you're at risk that people will not come in because who else is there, or because it's associated with Soapbox at all.

      1. What codebase would be preferred?

      Rhost.

I will kind of agree with Griatch that games like Resistance and Secret Hitler illicit a more immediate "I'm not the traitor, are you kidding?"

There is a two-player version of this kind called Inhuman Conditions: A Game of Cops and Robots. It's very much a game about improv with a minor drawback that the interviewer has a 50/50 shot of being right. If you don't go into the game going, 'How will I mess with the other player's head?', you probably won't have fun.
