Whenever I read "X is dying" now, I just assume it means "X is changing and I'm not."
Also sometimes phrased as "Millennials are killing the..."
A lot of that is really "this thing has been so stupidly overblown in importance that millennials have chosen to eat and pay rent rather than invest in X."

Touching on this for a moment, it is exceptionally important that when you are venting you make sure the other person knows that you're venting. Many folks I'm close with like to offer advice, or solutions, when all I need is to vent. So make sure they know "this is venting time, not problem-solving time."
Let's not speak as if we embody the will of our tribes, yes?

I don't really have solid examples, as this sort of thing happened more frequently when I was much younger (late teens through to mid-twenties). For background, in my real person life I'm a rather flamboyant and very obviously gay guy. And with such a flouncy, bouncy attitude comes the expectation of a certain type of girl/woman.
As you can imagine my self-confidence was eroded somewhat during my youth by a near-constant stream of young women attempting to 'claim' me as their personal "gay best friend" while treating me essentially as some combination of a porcelain doll and YSL designer handbag.

This isn't about what people deserve - if it were, there'd be no homeless people. Do people going through a rough period deserve help and support? Absolutely. That is undeniable for any decent person. It's... really about marketing. I am less inclined to give money to people with a brand new, shiny, high-end smart device. Either they don't need the money, or they're terrible at making smart choices with money. Either way, the guy asking for food with one shoe and no socks needs my help more.
@Ganymede I'd also like to vehemently object to the idea that strippers and prostitutes need to "clean themselves up and fly straight." Those you associated might well have done, but let's not tar entire professions with the same brush.
