      @Misadventure Teaching is a job like any other. You'll find people that are truly, deeply, and inspiringly passionate about their choice of vocation. You'll find people that suck the life out of everything they touch.

      Everyone remembers the teachers that they hated. Everyone remembers the teacher (almost always singular) that they loved. Nobody remembers the average joe that did their best.

      @HelloProject There's having self-awareness, and there's wallowing in the result of that self-awareness. Playing the victim is bad, certainly, but shouting "I AM SELF AWARE" from the rooftops is just as selfish and stupid and off-putting.

      I'm still desperate for a decent Star Trek game. Doesn't have to be anything groundbreaking, just... decent.

      @Arkandel If I need to use external resources to "optimise" my character, your game is bad.

      Sure. But the idea that simply having X level of skill should be enough to win is missing the entire point of dice rolling.

      Requiring characters to be an uber-badass is worse than allowing respecs, in my view. Half the time people are agonising over chargen is because they don't want to be useless. Giving even the most 'useless' character a chance to shine in the story is vital.

      Emotional distance is pretty much fuckin' vital.

      Becoming emotionally attached to any person at all will lead one to being open to manipulation, whether intentional or otherwise.

      You run the game. Your mind must be set, fully, on running the game. Not appeasing the people, or improving the lot of the people, or impressing the people. The game is ultimate. Anything else is what you have other staff for.

      ETA: I'd take pretty much anything @EmmahSue has to say regarding headstaffing as gospel. She's been through the ups, the downs, the me. She has gone through more than her fair share of BS to get to where she is in our community's esteem.

    • RE: Meshing Groups

      Oh, another thought: Why are these people in particular here? Come up with a reason for why these specific individuals are involved in the story you're telling. Give each something that only they can do, so that everyone is useful/helpful but won't really succeed without the other people.

      @thesuntsar

      It’s real hard to teach social skills, especially in an environment that caters to the non-social.

      More pertinently, it's hard to teach people anything when they don't want to learn. They're comfortable in their group, they aren't inclined or desirous to change that.

      A thing I should have learned a long time ago.
      If at first you don't succeed, and it's not vital that you do succeed, try something else before you try the failed thing again. Life experience is just as important as actual skill.
