RE: Critters!
@arkandel The odd part is... if you put Gus into a wooded area with relatively few larger predators? He'd probably get along just fine. But frankly, we keep suppressing their natural instincts as house cats because it's inconvenient for us. Scratching the furniture? No, bad. 'Hunting' your feet/hands? No, bad. Zoomies at 3am because that's when instinct says is best to hunt? No, bad.
We love cats, but WE'RE turning them into derps by forcing them to live on our terms.

RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.
@arkandel Yeah, I have to say that my instant pot and air fryer see a lot more action these days than my stovetop. Until the kiddo wants pasta, anyways. XD

RE: Critters!
@macha Almost assuredly. Phone calls, web calls, anything where they can HEAR other people, SEE other people, but there's no scent. Animals are much more scent-driven than we are. It's how they mark territory, claim ownership over objects (and people), how they indicate maturity and readiness to breed. Even cats, as sight-based predators, use scent for a TON of things. Dogs even moreso. So having 'people' around that they can't smell? It's like playing peek-a-boo with a baby.

RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.
@arkandel So if there is one thing I've learned... its that I haaaaaaaaaaate ceramic cooktops (about as much as hate the stupid fucking 'smart burners' my complex installed in all the apartments). Time, stress, and wear is all that's needed to crack one of them, but nobody TELLS you that. That crack could have happened just from the surface heating up. There may have been a stress fracture under the surface that finally split wide enough to crack and you just happen to be the unlucky one that was in the apartment when it happened.
The biggest issue is that most complexes never want to have to replace large appliances. So they will literally run them until they fall apart and then try to make it your fault somehow for their breaking down. Never mind that it was probably 15 years old and hadn't been properly serviced at any point during those 15 years.
Glasstop stoves only have a lifespan of 8-12 years (depending on whether its electric or induction), but most of them that are in play have been in play since the late 80's or early 90's. They got SUPER popular around then so everyone started using them as a cheap way to 'upgrade' a kitchen. If you can, I would check your range for a serial number or other identifying mark to determine just how long ago it was made and if its simply run past the end of it's natural lifespan.

RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.
@arkandel My complex's maintenance team is actually having to try to put in an order for either a replacement fridge door or a replacement fridge because mine has a crack running along the inside and I refuse to leave something that I will end up being held responsible for when I move out.

RE: Critters!
@ganymede I mean, I wouldn't call being open and friendly during web meetings being an asshole... XD
-
RE: Critters!
@arkandel Its the lack of scent. Cats love web meetings because they get all the coo'ing praise and attention, but there's no extra people there to make them tense. So they can parade about in front of the webcam, getting cuddled and petted by their person, and getting the verbal affection of others!

@reimesu I miss those totally fake bright red boneless spare ribs. I can't find them ANYWHERE anymore!

RE: General Video Game Thread
@arkandel What @Wretched said. Also anything that's open world. There are literally timed open world events that happen on a set schedule. So you can grab your group, slay the beastie, gain fabulous prizes... then dip out when you're ready. Hell, there are whole TRAINS devoted to just kinda... running the major world bosses in an endless loop. You can jump in when you want and jump out when you want. They'll still be there when you get back!

RE: The Work Thread
@macha Wifi does not cause blackscreen. Wifi does not have that ability. Wifi can be the cause of why your connection flickers, drops, stutters, etc. Anything else is on their end.
That said, most ISP's can run cable through the walls/ceiling/etc. so that you can use a secondary modem/router to get an ethernet connection to your bedroom. But they will charge you for it.
And this is why Genie now refuses to work for companies that try to insist that I use my own PC, provide no stipend to cover basic internet or work-related WFH expenses (desk, chair, etc.). They are already saving a fuckton of money in the lack of building lease, insurance costs, repairs and maintenance on said buildings, etc. They can afford to cover the cost of a laptop with the software they wish me to use, the internet I will need to do the job, and any reasonable purchases that need to be made to set up a home office.

RE: General Video Game Thread
@arkandel You can Raid. You can PVP. You can WVW. You can work on the expansions (all of the expansions are post level-cap content). You can do top-tier crafting stuff (Legendaries can take months of effort, but that is some peoples' jam). You can do Fractals. You can do Living World content. You can go for full map completion. If you want to chase mounts you have to do the expansions (that is how you get them, through the expansion story lines). You can chase achievements.
Basically... what would you like to do in end-game?

@tnp said in General Video Game Thread:
I have to second Guild Wars 2 (which was mentioned either here or somewhere else, I don't recall). It's a lot of fun, it's updated often, the basic game is free so can be tried for no cost, and most amazingly of all, the other players are incredibly helpful. I can't think of a single troll that I've encountered.
That was probably me. I love to praise GW2 up and down every chance I get. XD I will say that I do see trolls (usually in the hub cities) but they don't last long. They get laughed and mocked and flagged VERY quickly. Guild Wars mods don't fuck around when it comes to trolls/racism/sexism/etc. Its been a pure pleasure to play the game for the last 9 years.

RE: Health and Wealth and GrownUp Stuff
@ominous I will agree that cedar smells great. I am very much over the pine smell. It's just too antiseptic for my preference.
Tobacco and vanilla are great, provided you get it from a company that does the tobacco scent well. Otherwise it ends up smelling like wet ash and fakey vanilla flavoring.

RE: Movie / TV / Streaming Peeves or Whatever
@ominous Most sets are NOT as dangerous as Rust's was purported to be. And it's generally only when those corners are cut that deadly mistakes end up happening. In 2014 a camerawoman was killed on the set of Midnight Rider. She was hit by a train. Dead serious. Hit by a motherfucking train. Why? The head honchos neglected to secure the railroad tracks for filming, that was a live train that went through there, just doing a normal run.
The family of the deceased filed suit and it went to court. It took time, but in the end it was declared the fault of the people charged (negligence was the end result, I believe), and a settlement was determined out of court.
So I would say that while 43 deaths in 20 years sounds bad (and is bad), the actual percentage is pretty small. Which is frankly a miracle given some of the situations these people are put into. Also, without doing deep digging for facts and figures, and based off of various interview remarks... there's actually a fairly low turnover rate in the movie industry. It's why it's so damn hard to get into, from any side. People that do those jobs want to be doing those jobs. Or they want their bosses job and are doing this one until the opportunity arises to take their place. The one area this isn't true is stuntpeople. They have an extraordinarily high turnover rate just due to the hazards of the job. One bad fall/leap/fight/whatever can end a career.

RE: Movie / TV / Streaming Peeves or Whatever
@ominous Well... apparently between 1996 and 2016, 43 people have died due to accidents on set. This does NOT include Brandon Lee, who died in 1993. Orrrrrrrrrr the three people the died filming Twilight Zone: The Movie when a helicopter crashed ON them instead of behind them.
I knew about literally none of these 43 deaths.
