    • RE: New Comic/Superhero Themed MU*

I cannot write a ton of words on this from my phone, but, after the excellent posts on mutants and bigotry, I think @Entropy needs to make a choice if his world is going to lean more DC or more Marvel. As the amazing JLA/Avengers pointed out, the worlds are similar but have fundamental differences of theme and mood. Both have large variety, but on average, DC is more utopian than Marvel, which always held to a core of human cynicism. And you need to make a choice.

And you need to get me pictures of Spider-Man!!

As a massive comics guy and two and a half time MU creator I would love to help with world building and integration.

EDIT: The only other teenagers we ever saw in the movies were Luke and Anakin, one was a whiney farmboy and the other was a space creeper.

Leia is about two minutes younger than Luke, so include her. We are one-for-three in 'teens who have their shit together'. Possibly more, once we know about all the new folks from the original trilogy greatest hits album.

Totally right, but I guess she never comes off like a teenager, where as Luke totally does. While Leia is being a badass space boss/rebel, Luke is playing with toys and complaining.

I feel bad because I did have a Star TREK character who was a big fan of 20th century terran rhythm poetry and would occasionally freestyle.

      He was an Andorian.

Sabine isn't that bad. She wears Mandalorian armor with a custom paint job and has dyed hair. She's just a teenage dirtbag, baby.

      @Ganymede

      It was absolutely accidental.

      MOVING ON.

      Themes

More things on heaven and earth

The world is large, both physically and metaphysically. Outside of normal perception lies a Twilight state where incorporeal things exist. A thin Gauntlet seperates a Shadow of spirit existence from the "real". Hidden places exist where they cannot. And in all of these strange areas lurk horrors. There is no end to the unusual and the strange on Bump in the Night. The supernatural is not easily understood or classified, and the things that lurk are not inherently static.

      Player vs Environment

Primarily, the overall goal of BITN is to have players taking the fight to, or perhaps just trying to survive against, supernatural terrors. Hunting monsters. Investigating ghosts. Maybe bargaining with a devil. But in general, the antagonists on BITN are non-player characters. This does not mean that PCs cannot clash, or even come to blows, but that is NOT our focus here.

      The Mortal Coil

If you kick wolfman in the nards, beware the consequences. The world of BITN is one where the supernatural exists, and it can and will kill you. Characters may die and if they do, this is not because you are a bad person. It just means the night got a little darker. Not all plots can and should result in significant injury, but never take the monsters lightly.

      Action! Excitement! Intrigue!

We aim to have active PCs doing things. STed scenes should be frequent and easy to engage in. While ther is nothing wrong with more mundane, relaxed RP, it is the goal of BITN to provide frequent opportunities to Do Something. Break into a museum to steal that talisman. Track down that ghost bear. Run from the killer clown through the forest. Scenes should be happening as often as possible, but should also have variety. Not every action sequence is a fight. There is room for chases and tense sequences of hiding and stealth. There can be occult adventures, negotiations with human-looking monsters and more.

To maintain interest, I am going to steal a page from Onyx Path and post some development insights and even some content that will be upcoming. I am not going to start a new thread for it. But hey, feedback is nice! So here we go, some raw, unedited as of yet news files.

      NEWS STATS

On BITN, players are expected to represent the character that exists on their character sheet to the best of their ability. This includes both their strengths AND their weaknesses. If your character has a low Stamina, do not pose them performing extreme acts of endurance. If they have a low Intelligence and/or Academics, they probably do not have a grasp on literary quotes. Characters with poor Presence and Manipulation are unlikely to be the darlings of the social scene. Roleplay accordingly.

      NEWS FAKE IT

On the opposite end of the spectrum from people ignoring your characters flaws, you should not need to possess every stat your character does. It is perfectly acceptable to fudge reality. If you want to play a doctor, you should not be penalized by a lack of OOC knowledge. Any time a character in a scene wants to fake it, they may declare so OOC and make an appropriate roll. People should endeavor to try and take the results of the roll into the pose. This is not meant to bypass RP, just allow a little fudging of reality. If the Doctor character wants to throw in some medical jargon, don't bite their head off it isn't real world accurate.

    • How hard should staff enforce theme?

As per my usual, I will primarily focus on Chronicles of Darkness (formerly nWoD) in this, but I believe this can be applied to many games.

So you have a game. You put a lot of work into it. You build a theme you feel is awesome, and reflects how the game world should be.

Then you have a player who fucks it all up. Maybe they are just reckless, a Vampire who is shitting all over the masquerade. Or a Mage who is just cruising through life in an invisible car. Or a werewolf who is betraying his pack to every dick slinging stud they meet. WHATEVER.

So there are various ways this could be dealt with, and I am sure there are people who would bitch about whatever.

Ignoring it may or may not be feasible, depending on how private the behavior is. This is especially easy if it is kept so secretive that no one finds out. And probably the best choice there.

Another option is to try and discuss it with the player rationally and maturely OOC. Maybe offer an alternative.

The other extreme is to have the IC world react, via NPCs and/or encouraged PCs. If someone is being blatantly stupid, maybe they are spoken to or given a punishment for their actions.

What is fair? Is fair important?

When I played Doom on, I want to say Heroes Dreams, I got a lot of RP. I often crossed paths with heroes when we could come up with reasons, but I also formed my own damned supervillain team AND adopted an evil daughter/apprentice.

I think my most memorable scenes were taking the Princess of Latveria to a US Mall, and visiting the Xavier Institute to discuss Magneto.
