@magee101 Announcements are for the forum. And I don't know, it didn't clearly seem to belong anywhere really. I thought to just put it in as a random link at first.

You ought to have an "Other Games" forum for posts on video games, tabletop rpgs, wargames, board games, etc. Posts discussing them can be found all over the place.

Renting out half of my house, and why do so many people want you to instantly talk with them on the phone about it?! We're not even past anonymous Craigslist ads and you instantly give away your number? I get people want to know it isn't a scam, but aaah.

I'm really happy with the computer and the fact that it's taken me so long to save for it makes me extra happy. And it's mine.

And just because I want to offer specs on what I bought for the computer people in the house.

That is almost identical to what I got a few months back.

      Another interesting read.

Hilarious. I love the first illustration. White guys wielding tiki torches on game controller. I didn't know Richard Spencer and his merry band of neo-nazis were the ones behind toxic video game culture.

Anita Sarkeesian is a guest of honor at GenCon next week. She's going to provide her brilliant insights on toxic TTRPG culture. What next? Toxic male culture in model-railroading?

A little Q&A with the producer: White Wolf AMA 13th of July 2018

There were some strange questions asked about a neo-nazi brujah example and a die roll example of 1, 4, 8, 8, which is some sort of neo-nazi code.

But the most bizarre was their apology and assurance that they've removed the word "trigger" from the rules. As in "this triggers beast mode" or "this discipline triggers this effect". Apparently the word "trigger" triggers people who are triggered or something. It left me wondering whether it's even in their best interest to be playing in the World of Darkness.

A lot of it comes down to opportunities. That article (and others) talk about how girls entering CS degree programs in the 80's and 90's felt behind because they hadn't had the opportunity to work with computers as kids, unlike a lot of the boys (who had grown up playing video games). Girls interested in computers were often teased or discouraged from that pursuit.

One problem with that article's theory is that the graduation should have dropped a decade or more after the introduction of the PC, not when it was introduced.

@roz said in General Video Game Thread:

Wasn't programming originally thought of as "women's work" way back in the day?

Well in a way. When I started we would hand write programs on coding sheets and hand them off to data entry clerks who would key punch it on to cards. Most data entry clerks were women, and many of the female programmers I knew, did actually start out as data entry clerks or operators. But that doesn't really explain the high rates of women getting actual CompSci degrees in the 80's.

And then that shifted when people realized the incredible power and potential of it, and so it became a "man's field" and that's why the rates of female programmers a couple decades ago were higher?

      No.

Edit: I would add that you didn't even need a degree to get hired as a programmer in the 80's.

      Girls can't play Battletech.

Knowing that you're being sarcastic, it hit a "This Makes Me Think Of".

Yeah.. and the observation that any real "misogynists" worth their salt, would have drawn the line at "female" before "they". 😉

This makes me think of the Battletech Mush that was out for, oh, a very long time. Many of the key players who made it possible, from the math to the coding to the players, were women.

It doesn't surprise me. Over my career, I've noticed the number of female programmers has been declining. I thought it was anecdotal... maybe just in the industries I worked in. But it's a statistical fact. In 1984, 1 in 3 programmers were female. Today it is 1 in 5. So perhaps thirty years of teaching little girls that they can be whatever they want to be... worked!?

This is not people being 'oppressed', it is misogynistic man babies who wail and shit themselves because they feel they are not being utterly pandered to and solely accommodated as they believe is their natural due. Anything that they even think looks like it is not specifically designed to fit their particular narrow world view is a fundamental attack on them and a sign of wicked prejudice.

There's a female option in Battletech!? What the hell? That's ridiculous. Girls can't play Battletech.

I read this on one of the RPG forums. She was fired by Paizo a few years ago for pretty much the same thing, although they kept it really low key. The only nice thing I can say about her, is that at least she won't be doing harm to role-playing or video games in the near future. Hopefully the next professional words she utters are "Would you like fries with that?"

@Tyche Just because you didn't see it, doesn't mean it didn't fucking happen.

People are remarkably unreliable when it come to relating conversations they heard a year later let alone almost twenty years later. Posting it on the internet doesn't mean it happened either.

The thesis of the article in a nut shell:
"Trust me. It won’t work. High school already sucks. Believe me when I tell you that a massive uptick in security makes it worse."

The author would have had a strong point if there had been a shooting at his school after they "secured" the school. He actually bemoans that the school district had an "obscene median income" which allowed them to install security detectors/cameras, and hire armed guards. If it don't work, why is it that Sidwell Friends private school where all the elite in Washington send their children have far more elaborate systems of security and armed guards. Better the school district was poor and couldn't provide security? Sorry the article was way too long on feels and too short on logic.

People wore trench coats in high school depending on fashion and weather needs of the location.
Just because they didn't where you live(d) means /nothing/.

The point is that where and when they were popular does mean nothing. And if a school district determines it doesn't want kids to wear them for "reasons" then it's not the end of the world.
