Honestly another one of those things I've always wanted to do is Earth-2 where it's set at the late phase of the golden age. So 1960's or so, but you've got the Earth-2 continuity and characters and that feel, but over and over I get told the same thing.
We don't want historical settings we didn't LIVE in historical settings we don't want to learn. And that really breaks my heart.
      [...]
Nothing else 'sells' DC only games even with an active Dev team don't sell. Marvel only doesn't sell. The market has shown over and over that people don't REALLY want anything new.

Honestly man? At this point in time, with the current events IRL especially but also the general decline of interest in the hobby over the last...decade, you might not ever get this magical self-sustaining number you want no matter what you do. That's just a risk you face in putting effort into opening a game.

In that case, I would suggest you stop focusing so hard on what other people want from a game and just make the game YOU would want to play in. Your passion for it will shine through, and other people who like the vibe will come play, and you'll wind up having a much better time and a lot more fun than if you were forcing yourself to just slog through some generic blah that has already existed a bajillion times and draws the same nasty, boring players playing the same characters.

Will it last? Maybe not? But again, there's just no guarantee it would anyway.

      Just my two cents.

@Wizz I started to feel differently about Harry Potter when all the shit with JK started. Then I realized something: this is a fandom that is almost entirely taken over by the fans. And Harry Potter fans have pretty much taken over everything and rejected JK Rowling's bullshit. It's genuinely heartwarming to watch.

I do understand where you're coming from, but Harry Potter as a story took on its own life, independent of its creator, and as a community, the challenge has been and is being met.

I hope that helps, but if it doesn't, I understand that, too.

I'm not actually sure what this means. Harry Potter is not public domain, it's not like Rowling surrendered the IP, and if she wanted to I'm sure she could make things very difficult legally for any fan community who had somehow convinced themselves otherwise and tried to produce their own take on the setting or whatever else this implies.

It's sweet that many of her fans agree that her opinions are trash, but that doesn't actually change anything for me.

I'm sure this could be its own topic at this point, but I personally don't really feel like arguing the point. If you want to enjoy Harry Potter, enjoy Harry Potter.

      @Mr-Johnson

It's not that you're wrong, we're just suggesting that when you say (for example) "Marvel Steampunk," that conjures a very specific aesthetic, culture, time and technology that people are already familiar with because it's pop culture. You can easily find pictures, fiction, movies...it's all over, and it is more or less consistent.

When you talk about a general "50's aesthetic, but everything is modern" you obviously have a very specific image in your mind, but that translation is going to be pretty wildly different for different people -- for example, I wouldn't have pictured diesel biplanes and microswitches and whatever else. You'd have to constantly be explaining to people what exists and what doesn't exist, or how it's different and why.

If you wanted to oversimplify and just be like, "ok literally everything is the same, just imagine a retro style," that's kinda fun I guess, but I'm not sure I see the point in a text medium.

Modern day. Modern history. People know the general setting already just by me saying that. BUT everything is Diesel powered. Combustion engines for everything, monoplanes never caught on. So everything is biplanes and triplanes even the jet engines.

I would honestly struggle a lot more with the cognitive dissonance of some sort of fusion of modern history and random changes to technology than just picking a consistent theme like dieselpunk/atompunk/what-have-you that you can encapsulate for other people to grok easily. I feel like you'd really get bogged down by minutiae you'd have to constantly explain, correct, and reinforce otherwise and I'm not sure I see the benefit.

I've always been more in line with the same school of thought as @Roz outlined; a large part of my appreciation for art only comes when I feel like I understand the artist.

But what's great about art is how subjective all of that is. You can assign some independent value to Harry Potter or whatever work if you want, I am absolutely not here to convince you otherwise. I just wanted to talk about how I feel when I see that tattoo in the mirror lately.

I'm not sure that I do love it anymore. The books have had sentimental value to me because I grew up with them, but how I feel about them as an adult has changed a lot, and especially in the light of the author's views that I personally find hateful a lot of that fondness for them has dried up.

Also, I dunno, I wouldn't exactly compare a former fandom to a former religion. But if I'd gotten a bible verse or a cross, just speaking for myself I'd probably feel pretty strongly about altering or removing them too when I became an atheist.

I am very much feeling the same anxiety and stress of everyone on the last page or so, it honestly does make it easier to know none of us are alone.

Initially I planned on doing remote schooling with the Kiddo this year, but he has been so depressed and restless and anxious without his friends at school that I finally decided to send him back physically instead. He starts tomorrow and I have not been able to sleep yet. 😕

Also, on the subject of tattoos: my first and only one I have I got two years ago, a really stylized Deathly Hallows, over my heart. I've really liked it, but after Rowling outed herself as ridiculously transphobic I am feeling very shitty about it. I'm really torn over whether I want to get it covered up or removed; considering the former, but not yet sure with what.

I really, really liked the first episode, but the way the second of Lovecraft Country went has me like...ehhh. I'll keep watching, but I'm a little baffled by how much the tone and pacing shifted and how they went through that plot at like, a full-on sprint.

      It was studded with..uh... prose.

Were they at least trying their best? Because y'know this godforsaken year I would totally be willing to accept that in a sort of compassionate "carry on, my wayward son" sort of way.

    • Get Yer Spoopies Out

I thought a thread to discuss fears, favorite creepypasta, nightmares and other generally spoopy things would be kind of fun. (It's not October yet but uh...shhhhh.) Opportunity for writing prompts, a way to work out the lingering spoopy chills if you can't shake 'em, or to share 'em.

To kick it off, I just woke up from a very spoopy dream and I wanted to mention it somewhere before I forget. It was about human beings being replaced by something in the dark and the only way normal people could tell was the replacements would come back with tapetum lucidum in their eyes.

In the dream I was on a camping trip with a group of friends and they kept stepping away from the campfire one by one and coming back replaced. But as it is sometimes in dreams, I was too paralyzed with fear to say anything as I would look across the flames and see the eye shine, and none of my other friends seemed to be noticing. All I could do was tear up as whatever they were smiled knowingly back at me and asked someone else to go fetch something away from the light.

Woke up with a bit of sleep paralysis as I sometimes do, expecting someone to come through my bedroom door with eye shine. Ugh.

      Ok go! 😄

      Batman was always a Republican.
He's an obscenely rich man with an entire city as his personal theme park where he can play dress up (with a ridiculously advanced arsenal no less!), beat the impoverished and the mentally ill within an inch of their lives, then catch and release them through an incompetent and crippled healthcare system so he can do it all again.

My son and I just finished She-Ra and the Princesses of Power and uh, man. A high adventure, pulpy swords-and-sorcery-and-sci-fi game would be ridic amounts of fun.

It got me snagging the Masters of Umdaar FAE book and paging through it. Now if only I could code worth two shits. >____>

Maybe a game that was based on a type of Demigods, Gods, and Goddesses like thing. Like American Gods or a blast from the past with Magnus Chase or Percy Jackson-type fun.

Scion 2E has been...sort of a thing for a minute! They're still working on the demigod and god stuff tho.

Man, people complain about dinosaurs and power creep on normal games; I can't imagine the amount of whining and bitching there'd be on a game where there are literal tiers of power and if you're below someone else you're basically like a fly. Lol.

What is really cool (in theory, we'll see how they'll make it work) is that the different tiers are almost like completely different games this time around. Demigods and Gods aren't just "Hero character but can juggle mountains now." They don't just open themed coffee shops and casually smite the fuck out of people in BaRP, they've got very different spheres of responsibility and can't muck around in the mortal world without severe consequences, so they have to rely on Hero-level characters and mortals for the every day stuff. I think it'd be really interesting to see a MU* with all three interdependent tiers in action the way they've described it.

My confidence in MUers being able to apply that sort of division on a game is so close to zero it might as well be below it.

      GOSH OK NEGATIVE NELLY 😭
