@enoch I like that. If you couldn't already tell, my attitude is I've done enough apps over the years that I just want to cover what someone needs to know to understand I "get" a character, and get to doing things.

How simple/intensive is the app process meant to be?

RE: X-Men Utopia MUX
You could use a Comic Vine or Wiki page for a general reference for history, factor that into a cutoff, and summarize powers to specifically fit the stage they're at in the game itself without it turning into a massive write-up.
No reason people can't do a combination of both "Go read this here" and "Describe this in your own words in-game" as long as it's reasonably done.
With an FC, I'd care more about someone showing s/he knows how to play the character over all the rest. Being that an OC would not have been seen before by most, that's where a more in-depth write-up becomes necessary but I still think people should focus on making it as brief as reasonably possible.

RE: Make MSB great again!
All comments should have their own place separate from the ad post itself. If you allow one POV or another to accompany the ad post, it will only create a misleading sense of what the place is like.
Let people hash that stuff out one way or the other in another post dedicated to discussion about the game. If any of it reaches the point where it's no longer really constructive, chances are the Hogpit will need to come into play if the review post itself isn't already there to begin with (and I don't think it should be, since the Hogpit is opt-in).

At the least, I think we could all agree we don't need an app process that's on the level of what Brave and the Bold was.

Re: Apps, I don't even know why a lot of games bother with some of the stuff they do (like making everyone re copy & paste wiki writeups). Unless you have stats, detailing out powers is BS anyway, so really the only relevant thing is just your take on the char, maybe some ideas of goals, future storylines, etc?
I think another part of it is so many of us have been RPing for so long, the idea of doing yet another full app just feels like a waste of time at this point. Most of us know the basics of who we want to be. Let us show that and get on our way to play. It's also less reading for staff, which should mean a faster turnaround on apps depending on what they want someone to show as far as knowledge goes.

@shaggy Mainly, show that you have a grasp on what makes the character tick. Can you nail the body language? The way the character sounds? The personality? I'll take that any day over all the rest. Get into the head of the character and now we're talking.
I see some OCs that aren't even good at portraying little details like that, things that actually breathe life into a character, and they created it. They should know the ins and outs of that person.

RE: X-Men Game
The other thing with Deadpool is a fair amount of what makes him work in a comic book or movie is breaking the fourth wall. I just can't buy into that in a MU* environment.
Pop culture references are also a big thing with him, and that can be fun but also tough to pull off if the setting isn't considered present day. If it's a future timeframe, you almost just have to make up your own pop culture on the fly if you want to play up that side of him.
Aside from that, it's just rare that I've seen a Deadpool that just wasn't a bother to deal with IC or OOC.

I don't know code and I have no interest in staffing whatsoever, but if I can help with any brainstorming consider me interested.

RE: X-Men Game
Honestly, if the idea of the place is to be mutant-centric, I wouldn't even have characters like Spider-Man or the Fantastic Four playable. Keep them as NPCs handled by staff or, if it ends up allowed, capable of being emitted by trusted players when needed (and documented for the sake of consistency).
Once you start straying from mutants into other territory, the creep just starts to grow.

RE: X-Men Game
@bobotron Right. I think some of the comments were coming through quickly enough that I thought a YO thing might have been in play as a concept. If not, that's fine too.

RE: X-Men Game
@bobotron Then I would recommend trying the "See Comic Vine history" method, or whatever other site is preferred, with the ability to ignore certain things on a case-by-case basis if the WTFery of it is too absurd (for example). By this point, the info about most characters is out there to be found and all the app is is a way of rewriting the same stuff over and over again, just in a different way.
Keep the personality simple. Devise a few different, brief scenarios the player can pick one from to show a short "cutscene" portrayal of the character as part of the app, if needed.
Give players the freedom to just get out and play, and if staff determines someone is mishandling a character they can address that on an as-needed basis.

RE: X-Men Game
@the-tree-of-woe A place I've seen made it as simple as letting people take history from a site like Comic Vine and go "Everything here happened," or "This all happened except for..." An alternative would be to write a simple background if the player wants to stray from actual canon history.
That could be a little problematic for a Year One sort of place, especially if you start having characters in certain groups who have a mixture of some keeping history and others going off in another direction, however. It'd be confusing to have Cyclops acting like the original X-Men existed while Jean Grey tries to go with a different thing, so staff would have to decide how to handle that.
Aside from this, I don't think a Utopia sort of setting would fit a Year One setup well at all, unless staff comes up with an alternate timeline of events that essentially establishes this as the way things are without all the comic history taking place exactly as it's played out.

RE: X-Men Game
@scourge My thought would be if the FC wasn't already connected to the X-Men-related stories in some way (X-Men and all its other titles including New Mutants, Excalibur, Generation-X and so on), then it's a no.

RE: X-Men Game
@ghost My sympathies. From what I've seen, Iron Banner is full of players who are spawn-camping, and the token system for IB gear is a shitshow compared to how D1 handled it.

RE: X-Men Game
That could also create a healthier FC/OC mix if it goes well. Some will just do one or the other, but some will try both.
ETA: not that there needs to be an in-game explanation for more mutants coming out of the woodwork in the case of new OCs, but the theme could potentially even deal with something happening that leads to a sudden boost in those with mutant powers. A mutagen of some kind, some villain doing a thing, just natural evolution, Sinister Gone Wild (don't forget the censor bar), etc.

RE: X-Men Game
I wouldn't have a problem with a no-alt policy for the first month or two of the game. That's more than enough time for interested people to app who they want as a primary character, then if they really want a second one they can see who's left. It should be open season by then.
As for activity, don't do some thing where you need to have a logged scene or whatever once every so many weeks. Figure out tiers, come up with reasonable activity levels for each, and have it go by the calendar month.
When it comes to proof of activity, leave out player voting. If someone's in a log beyond just a cameo (this might have to be checked, though), it counts.
Also, on a personal note I'd love an in-game logging system that automatically goes into a real-time log somewhere online, and I'd love some sort of pose code that separates each player's pose with something. These two things did make UH very convenient, and having a separator of some kind (along with, even, an identifier for whose pose it was) felt so much easier to follow a scene as it was going on.

RE: X-Men Game
It'd be good to keep it focused to mutants only, or at least make them the primary point of the game.
I also think it'd be good to break away from everything being centered around Xavier's School. Utopia itself may or may not be it, but it'd be a change from the usual at least.

@apu Yes, you can play the role of the filthy, dirty, disgusting, brutal, bottom-feeding, trash bag ho!
